wilkins Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 when i seperate the hens they seem to want to land or walk around in front of the cocks /box section any ideas to prevent this and keep them flying
dwh Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 never had any trouble with hens exercising they tear skys up but normally have to train cocks me to
Guest mick bowler Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 Personally i would never (or didnt) box them, but would if you want or need both sexes to race well. It can become hard work racing both sexes if you want to get the best from both. I found my hens would fly out of their skins, much more so than the cocks, so worked the system a little in favour of the hens, but then the cocks lost out. An example of this was i had a door between hens and cocks, they could hear each other and the cocks would be fighting one side of the door and the hens wouldnt be too bothered, but it stopped my hens pairing.

Guest frank dooman Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 yes ive raced roundabout for 4/5 years now but just shows never too late to learn my only prob was stopping the hens pairing up and the better the condition you get them in the more they do it last year they were on fire to the point i had 7/8 pairs on the floor gave up and re-paired the lot didnt look back after that i dont think i was out the top positions the rest of the season i have tried every trick in the book to stop the hens pairing and it was stairing me right in the face just keep the hens in the breeding sec DOH!! I feel like a thicko

Guest stb- Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 thats what ive done put the cocks in another loft on poles with avery YOUR SPOTON M8 THATS THE WAY TO DO IT ;)
speedbird Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 very interesting that some leave the hens in main section so they can lock them up. does that upset the cocks not being in the main loft.
mac1 Posted April 7, 2010 Author Report Posted April 7, 2010 how long would you keep cocks and hens together before basketing,if you raced hens only on widowhood
steve d Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 I have tried racing hens this year boxed in up and over boxes, we only have 8 I am not letting them fly around the loft just training them 17 mile daily, only had 1 race which was an open race over 50 lofts sent over 600 birds and we were 3rd so obviously happy with them, they have reared with 8 cocks in normal way but at the moment we are leaving the 8 cocks out the loft and are letting them play with a fantail cock when returning from training for around 5 minutes the fantail is clipped so they cant call him to any boxes, as long as this works we will continue and when they go stale their original 8 cocks will be given back to them :)
mac1 Posted April 7, 2010 Author Report Posted April 7, 2010 i have 9 widowhood hens mate 1st race last saturday, and the new place with recently hanted pigeons mine are boxed and trained twice a week 20 mile happy with them so far

mac1 Posted April 8, 2010 Author Report Posted April 8, 2010 how long would you keep cocks and hens together before basketing,if you raced hens only on widowhood
