antwerptom03 Posted May 21, 2006 Report Posted May 21, 2006 Hey all, Just curious how i should handle late hatches that'll be too young to race with my YB team this year. Do they need to be trained hard or could i make do with 10-15 tosses Thanks
Guest Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 Personally I wouldn't entertain late hatches to be raced as earlings. Most of the losses in our club this year have been last years late hatches.
T_T Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 Agree with Hyacinth. Late breds, unless off something very very special and required solely for breeding purposes, are not reared here. As for racing them next year, they will have adult bodies on baby wings. Save yourself the heartache.
TheSaddler Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 My best pigeon is late bred!, never even raced as a young bird - she won the fed over 3000 birds as a yearling and has had many prizes (she even won this weekend). You will lose the majority of latebreds but if you train them hard as young birds you stand a chance.
antwerptom03 Posted May 22, 2006 Author Report Posted May 22, 2006 What's the latest you folks would wean a youngster for this years young bird season? I'm only flying the first four races out to 200 miles so i can start building a decent OB team and I already have 28 in the YB loft now with another 8 in the nest. I had planned to split up my breeders after this round.
speedbird Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 think late breds are ok if you have plenty to make taking em up the road worth it there not what i call late breds though with plenty of training if you have some drop backs they will get a couple of races from them. i had about 10 late breds this year & starting em out trained all through winter on good days & started to race this year to soon stop em as weve had a few bad races & weathers not been great this year so keeping em training & waiting for drop backs when weather gets better or even next year
Guest Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 If you have the room and time take the risk and keep them, train them hard and then next year only race them when the weather is warmer. Out of ten late breds that I have ever bred, only one has ever got through the next season and won.
jacksafc Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 I had 14 latish YBs in this years team(all got the last come back Bubwith race) and only have 3 left after 6 races.
Diamond dave Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 HI JACK, SUMMER BRED BABIES SHOULD REALLY BE THE BEST OF ALL WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE CONDITIONS THEY ARE REARED IN. i AGREE WITH SADDLER - ONE OF MY BEST PIGEONS WAS SUMMER BRED (LATE). NEVER RACED IN THE YEAR OF BIRTH, RACED LIGHTLY AND CAREFULLY AS A YEARLING, THEN CAME GOOD AS A 2 YO.- hAS BEEN IN THE STOCK SHED FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS AND EACH YEAR I'VE TRIED A LATE BRED OUT OF HIM. IVE KEPT 2 OUT OF THREE NESTS (ONLY KEPT THE COCKS). oNE HAS TURNED OUT SO NICE THAT I AM KEEPING HIM IN THE STOCK SHED. THE OTHER IS NOW A YEARLING WHO WILL GET A COUPLE OF RACES THIS YEAR ( HES ACTUALLY ONE OF MY ENTRIES IN HYACINTH 200 MILE CHALLENGE - sO I'M KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED. ONLY TRAIN THEM ON GOOD EASY DAYS WITH PLENTY OF SHORT TOSSES 5 -10 MILES IN A RADIUS AROUND YOUR LOFT WITH AN EXPERIENCED BIRD DURING SEPT AND OCT. tHE FOLLOWING YEAR - ONLY WHEN TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 16 DEGREES. jUST MY THEORY MATE - GOOD LUCK WITH EM.
T_T Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 As with most things, you will ALWAYS get the exception to the rule. Any hatches after June the 1st are classed as late breds and their chances of going through a normal moult are slim. I stick with what I said on my previous post a late bred of the highest calibre for BREEDING ONLY. At least ANT, as with always. people give their views and it's up to you to make your mind up. Good luck with whatever you decide on.
Guest shadow Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 I must agree with T T latebreds for racing are more trouble than they are worth and 90% will go down as yearlings in bad weather or bad races, keep them for stock by all means
Guest Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 We were speaking to some of our club members yesterday about last Saturday's 200 miler, most of the birds that went down and haven't come back were latehatches, one member lost 10 and another 16, I really think this speaks for itself.
westy Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 in our club we have comeback races for the ybs so i am having a few now for then.
Chris Little Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 Agree with the previous mails , from our experiences latebreds are not worth the hassle , they are only good for breeding purposes. Needless to say I know of some successful birds that were latebreds but they are very few and far between.
