Lennut Tar Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 George UK. The real name is Potassium Permanganate, & I have just come in from the stock loft, before coming online here, where I had changed the water & used some in the drink for the birds etc. Out of favour now in most lofts, more expensive medication is preferred (don't ask me why) I've used it for many years & I always will (bought it in bulk last purchase I had), because the goverment placed it on the banned list, "Terrorists/Explosives," they told everyone. Load of crap in my opinion, for us pigeon flyers. As a demolition expert, :X :X :X compliments of the Goverment (2 years) many years ago, you would find more dangerous items under most peoples sink's etc, or in their laundry cupboard in my few. Enjoy.
Ohio Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Does it do something besides get rid of lice?

REDCHEQHEN Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Potassium Permanganate is an oxidising agent From Wikipedia: London chemist Henry Bollmann Condy had an interest in disinfectants, and marketed several products including ozonised water. He found that fusing pyrolusite with NaOH and dissolved it in water produced a solution with disinfectant properties. He patented this solution, and marketed it as Condy's Fluid. Although effective, the solution was not very stable. This was overcome by using KOH rather than NaOH. This was more stable, and had the advantage of easy conversion to the equally effective potassium permanganate crystals. This crystalline material was known as Condy’s crystals or Condy’s powder. Potassium permanganate was comparatively easy to manufacture so Condy was subsequently forced to spend considerable time in litigation in order to stop competitors from marketing products similar to Condy's Fluid or Condy's Crystals.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 i use it in there bath warter same here, used it for years now.
Lennut Tar Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Potassium Permanganate (condies crystals as I like to call it). For anyone fortunate enough to read the book about pigeons by Levi, 1st printed over 50 odd years ago, & still available in certain areas today. It was one of his recommendations for the treatment of canker, along with Bicarbonate of Soda & Hydrochloric Acid (spirits of salts) being an ex plumber, I certainly know what that smells like when it gets up your nose etc, but they all form part of my medicine cabinet you could say, & have done so for many years. Cheap & nasty some here may say, & out of date (maybe) but if used in the proper manner all can be of a benefit to the birds at times. At least in my opinion, "but then" ;D ;D ;D I'm only a novice at this game, compared to some here. PS. Robert Stroud (Birdman of Alcatraz) he also had some interesting tonics/medication, when he wrote about the problems & treatments of birds one could say too. Enjoy.
George UK Posted December 21, 2007 Author Report Posted December 21, 2007 never use it with wet fingers its a bugger to get off lol
jimmy white Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 my father used condies crystals oin the pigeons bath regular,, never done them any harm,, but i would prefer giving them a hot bath , the day after a race ,, i just feel that some may have taken a knock on liberation, or simply to ease their muscles ,, hot enough to be able to put your hand in [remember a pigeons temp, is higher than ours , about 5 degrees] they will enjoy this
THE FIFER Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 used to make a water mix for birdswith breething problems or one eye cold, you held its head under the water for a few seconds and when it came out you thought you had done something wrong as the bird could not stand for a while this was a old hand remidy

Lennut Tar Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 used to make a water mix for birdswith breething problems or one eye cold, you held its head under the water for a few seconds and when it came out you thought you had done something wrong as the bird could not stand for a while this was a old hand remidy The Fifer, :D it's than long since I last used that remedy I had completly forgotten about it, the mix/potion was that strong at the time ;D ;D ;D (black as a coal mine) you could say, & I do not think at the time, we would have won any kudos from the poor little buggers, that we were trying to help. Shocking, :P When one thinks about some of the things, we have attempted to do in the past. :X :X :X To help our little mates survive (worse than death I'm afraid for some, unfortunatly). :( . Enjoy.

Guest Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 Hi Jimmy A hot bath after a race slows down the muscle recovery rate A BIG NO NO Cheers Homer 49 i always was lead to believe a warm(not hot) bath relaxes muscles and thought that aids recovery. cold water expells blood from the surface of the muscles and hence there will be reduced oxygen flowing through the muscles. all muscles require oxygenation through them to perform...if reduced oxygen flow then cramps can occur.
George UK Posted January 5, 2008 Author Report Posted January 5, 2008 i have neve fed my birds after a training sesion i give them 30 mins to cool down a little feed n a little water then an hour later eat all you want n drink i had a red checker come back after 4 years so she loves me lol
NANCYVIEWLOFTS Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 use to use condys crystals in the bath water for the birds also when we removed the dew claws and docked the tails of our dogs we would crush the crystals into a fine powder and rub it into the flesh it cortorised the flesh and stopped it bleeding straight away it also cleansed the wound
