Thats were im going wrong, just get them used to not eating and they die!!!!! lol

Its a very fine line with youngbirds too much and there are a pain in the *expletive removed* too little and they dont develop, problem is this time of the year the hawks about so keeping them a little short means there keen to come home if theyve been spooked. Feed everything twice a day.

At this stage of the year it is best to feed twice a day in a trough. Put the feed down, allow them 5 mins, no more, and pick it up. Anyone not fed waits until the next feed. It will not do them any harm and it will do you a power of good. You can not afford to be soft. Later you ought to be ration feeding but it's too early for that now. When you feed you should have a sound to go with it. You can use a whistle or a clicker or even your own voice. The idea is to get them used to trapping on comand. Or on cue if you would prefer it.

Obviously you should be careful if you have mixed ages because the younger ones could loose out to the older ones. And this is a good time to introduce peanuts. Use the human grade and ration them to about two each per day. Barley should figure in the mix. This is very important at this stage because it will allow you to see when they have had enough. They will start to leave the barley when they have had their fill which is a good gauge for you to use so that you don't overfeed. Besides, they will need barley later on in the season, so it will be a good idea to get them used to it now. One last very important detail. Remove the water before you feed and replace it when everyone is fed.

its not feeding that you want to know its how to keep them on their toes for trapping :)

you have to imprint on them from day 1 that you are food giver m8 i sit in loft for hours saying come on with my tin giving food a bit at a time i feed as much as they will eat if slow coming in they get short rations that day they soon get the message iv just come in from loft been playing with them on perches just before dark and gave them a couple of peanuts on perch

you will know if you get it right cos wont be able to watch them flying from outside house again if my pigeons see me in yard they are down cos they know i am food ;D ;D ;D

I am just starting up this year since I moved from burnley to lincolnshire so I have only six young birds that are only doing short flights at the moment, I have more due of the nest soon.

I just feed the yound birds twice a day, though they only get a quarter of their allowance in the morning. They go out flit around from loft to tree to loft onto the lawn back onto the loft etc, Ii spend a few hours with them whilst they are doing this, then when I'm ready for them to come back in I go in with the rest of their food and they all fly back in. This has worked for the last week.

One of the most successful flyers is Dennis Ford from Blaenavon. His father was absolutely brilliant. His pigeons had to drop down between houses into a small back yard. They never went on the houses and he was unbeatable when it came to trapping. I have no idea how he did it. Dennis has obviously learned from his father.

know how you feel mark i went from a garden where i had 60 feet of lofts and was lucky enough to do quite well, to a tiny garden where to be honest things are very different finding it hard to get a team around me i does get better though but its a much slower process mate . saying that some of the best flyers in the midlands have tiny gardens with very few birds they are what i call true flyers has they buy corn at a bag at a time ,cant afford to buy in bulk rarely treat and still give the big boys a good caneing week in and week out , knew one flyer who caught his birds with a landing net it was that tight of a drop so it can be done just a matter of hard work mate

i actually use a small bell everytime that i feed them, they are then used to the sound and when they need to come in just ring the bell. High protein feed if you are going on the darkness, and wait until a few start to drink then take the food away.keep an eye on them to make sure they are all feeding well before taking food away.  hope this helps.
