blackjack Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 I have worked with livestock most of my life and i cannot belive the (fanciers) whoare using antibiotics ad lib.People complain about ob/yb losses but i know of plenty of fanciers who prop thier lofts up with anti biotics. Baytril seems to be the in drug a powerful drug used to cure calves with e coli scours. If the calf goes down again its culled Baytril is a one use drug yet fanciers are using it 3or4 times a season . I have spoken to a number of good avian vets who think these people are setting a time bomb for a super bug look at lofts who have yb sickness every year people are using antibiotics for the wrong illness in most cases. Baytril clears the gut of all enzimes bad but more importantly good as well and this leads increased suseptability to illness. Yet people still suggest giving Baytril 2or3 times a year they want thrashing. Just look at what happen to pigs and poultry when anti biotics were used ad lib drugs became next to useless. Please think hard if it that sick and will not pick up on a single treatment cull.
ALF Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 DONT THINK YOU CAN BLAME ALL THE Y/B AND O/B LOSSES ON BAYTRIL BLACKJACK!!!
blackjack Posted October 7, 2006 Author Report Posted October 7, 2006 Sir i did not say that . What i said was people are using drugs powerful ones incorrectly and birds are losing thier immunity through that.
NANCYVIEWLOFTS Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 spot on blackjack ok if a pigeon needs antibiotics for a specific complaint by all means give it to them but the ad/lib use of it is not only doing the bird but also the fancy in general a great deal of harm you only have to listen to members in your club they say their birds are not right so i got SOME STUFF off a mate and nine times out of ten its baytril or some other antibiotic over ten years ago a top avian vet told me that yes baytril will clear a lot of complaints up but he said that because the fancier used it and it did lift his birds they would use it again and this would do the birds no good at all in fact it would have the reverse effect ie would start to break down in immune system lets get our act together or we will be in the same state the Belguims are in having to dose their birds every other month[proping them up]
Guest Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 As I've said many times before I wouldn't have Baytril in my loft, I would rather give natural products to build up their natural immune system from birth
collect500 Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 i agree with hyacinth and nancyview lofts i have an aversion to taking drugs for myself so no way are the birds having them unless the vet prescribes em
jimmy white Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 yes in my opinion antibiotics are abused by some pigeon fanciers, who really should be advised by vet
Jeremy Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 Baytril and many other antibiotics are so easy to get on the net now without needing a vet.And on the black market in the UK with no labels on with the correct does rate etc. And fanciers are thinking where are all these Super bugs coming from they only have themselves to blame and the black market suppliers..
ALF Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 Sir i did not say that . What i said was people are using drugs powerful ones incorrectly and birds are losing thier immunity through that. LESS OF THE SIR BLACKJACK THE NAMES ALF JUST PLAIN OLD ALF ;)
Guest Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 I am with hyacinth, natural products to boost the immunity. Some of my club mates are always on my case because I don't use drugs to treat regular for cocci, canker etc. I do use natural products like cider vinegar, garlic, gems herbal products etc. For me prevention is better than the cure. This is just how I like to do things, but what does make me laugh is the same people who laugh at me for not doing it right, jeer at me for being highest prize winner in the club so must be getting something right. I can honestly say that apart from my first season when I was a novice, since following the natural path I have not had a single sick bird since. Actually had a one eyed cold a couple of weeks ago and cider vinegar sorted that out. It's simple things that amaze me, instead of treating for cocci all the time why not just keep floors bone dry so cocci can't flare up?? Instead of having drugs in cupboard to treat ecoli, salmonella etc as side infection from ybs that may appear, why not just put cider vinegar in the drinkers to keep crops acidified then it will never get a foot in the door let alone take hold. Natural ways round everything. Just my opinion. we all have our own ways.
Guest Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 Already converted. ;D Can I add what a bleedin refreshing change this thread is to the usual : give 'em this that & the other treatment crap. 100% spot on re resistance thro misuse. Already got it in the pigeon world with canker - super strains of trich resistant to all anti-canker specifics; in the medical world with MRSA which is a penicillin resistant bacteria, staphylococcus, folk taking penicillin for a few days and feeling better so coming off it rather than finishing the prescribed course, the bacteria surviving the few tabs become resistant to them, and 'breed' other resistant bacteria; and in the hysteria world where folk are taking tamiflu for any flu when its specifically designed for avian flu, and some avian flu virus strains are now resistant to it. Well done blackjack. A definite King & Ace and 'trumps' . ;D ;D
Roland Posted October 8, 2006 Report Posted October 8, 2006 Liked Blackjacks views, and go along wholeheartedly with Darren and Bruno. I only use what I am compelled to use, and sparingly if case really means my Birds - as to bird for that may well be gone - need assistance.
Bobthegas Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 Hi all, Re Cider Vinegar, What type is best purchased,eg apple cider vinegar, best type of place to purchase. Might sound a stupid question but i was told there were differant types, some manufactures water down etc. Must say what a great thread though, there was i thinking that i would have to medicate birds every four weeks. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Bob
Guest Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 ;DHi Bob i use apple cider vinegar , bought from either asda or tesco (depends where the shopping is done) ;D is generally the same consistency , not noticed it watered down ! ps far cheaper from the supermarket than the corn store , best regards . Andy .
Guest Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 Bob, I use sainsbury's apple cider vinegar but I read an article a long time ago that said it must be organic as the way organic cider vinegar is processed it doesn't take any of the key nutrients out that is required to do any good. It also must be 5% proof to be effective. Hope this helps.
Guest Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 http://www.racingbirds.com/remedies1.html Above links to article on CV; I read Mike's thoughts on this a few years ago and he recommended Aspinalls organic, you can also get this in the supermarkets. Dosage 5 ml to a 4 pint drinker.
Guest Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 Aspinalls is the one I use Alan, it certainly is good stuff.
Guest Paulo Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 I use sainsburys apple cider vinigar as well
stevebelbin Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 Holland and Barratt do a good organic ACV
jimmy white Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 :) see how you keep learning, ive used cider vinegar but reading the thread looks more sensible to use organic cider vinegar
Guest Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks!! ;D ;D ;D
Guest Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 ;DHow about teaching a new dog old tricks darren? that was a gem of a posting on natural products and there usage ! it makes complete sense , (when i read it the penny dropped!) Do you have any more gems like that or on systems? ;) thank you andy
Guest Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 Andy I do not pretend to be an expert on these things after all I have only been racing since 2001 but I do know what works for me. If I can be of any help in the future just pm me and I will try to answer anything you like based on my own experiences. At the same time there is a huge wealth of knowledge on this site with some fantastic fanciers so don't be shy , you need answers to anything just post a message. They are mostly normal folk on here but watch out for Roland!! lol ;D ;D
Guest Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 ;D Thanks Darran , may take you up on that , 6 years experience hopefully more knowledge than 3 years eh , all the best ...... andy
Roland Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 Some see in minutes what others miss for a life time... Mind I always wear dark shades me ...lol
