It IS ACTUALLY £4  CHEAPER TO GET A BOTTLE OF MOXIDECTIN SENT FROM AUSTRALIA FROM THE AUSTRALIAN PIGEON COMPANY THAN IT IS TO GET IT SUPPLIED FROM THEIR AGENTS IN THE UK. SOMETHING FAR WRONG HERE, WHO IS RIPPING WHO OFF?

You really did dig that hole all the way to Australia, your the man Tammy ;D

I use 1 drop on the back of the neck every 6 months and I never ever see a louse, you can use a different form of it in the drinking water too,the ratio of water to equvalan is on a thread on here somewhere.

Since the advent of the VMD, you can get Ivermectin legit & over the counter in proper doses for a number of birds e.g. for budgies, from pet shops.

Harkers do one for pigeons called harka-mectin think its around £7 for 5ml, and there's another [can't remember company] at £24.

was this ivermectin not responsible for killing birds of prey when they ate pigeons  ;) ;)sure i can remember bilco saying something about it one time .

Well there's more to this and I leave you to work out what is going on cos I can't.  :)

Couple of years back when Ivermectin was POM, Joe Murphy ran an article in BHW about using this on pigeons as a hawk 'taste' deterrant.

SHU took advice from Harker's 'chief biochemist' who said amongst other things yes it built up in birds of prey tissues and eventually poisoned them, but couldn't be used on pigeons cos ordinary fanciers couldn't be expected to get the dose right and ran the risk of harming themselves and their birds, and besides it was illegal to use it on birds cos it wasn't licensed.

When Ivermectin became an over the counter product, Harkers was one of the first to bring out their own Ivermectin product for pigeons, Harka-Mectin!

Look in any of the pet-superstores and you'll see Ivermectin products sold in individual bird sizes for budgies & canaries, think its a tiny pippette-like  thing that you break a seal and drop onto back of bird's neck?

AND THAT IS WHY BRUNO I THINK THAT WE ARE GETING A WATERED DOWN VERSION THAT IS TOTALLY USELESS TO USE ON PIGEONS AND WONT DO WHAT IT SAYS ,CAUSE IF IT DID THEN IT IS GOING TO KILL RAPTORS IS IT NOT  ;)

The version we are getting must be the correct strength for pigeons, Sammy, otherwise these companies wouldn't be allowed to market it under the Veterinary Medicines Exemptions Scheme. Solution strength has always been based on the weight of the animal being treated, so there's bound to be a big big difference between stuff meant for cattle and stuff meant for pigeons.

My own opinion on 'ivermectin kills hawks' is that it is basic tosh; judging by the number of people who claim to use it, if it was as effective against hawks as this myth claims, there wouldn't be a hawk problem now and RSPB would be using these poisonings to attack pigeon fanciers' reputations in public.  Fact is the stuff is sold for use on hawks too.

See BHW p131 Meditech advert this week: Ivermectin 'one spot' : 10ml @ £7.50 so that's now 3 companies that I know market it for pigeons.

not quite a hunner percent on this bruno but me thinks the rspb was instrumental in getting ivermectin for want of a better word WATERED down because of this ,but will check it out for you and come back to you about it ,think its just a case of them all jumping on the band wagon  ;)

Even the stronger stuff is available without prescription to farmers for their cattle

so I think some people are taking the p*ss somewhere as far as pigeons are concerned

but then again raptors dont eat cattle ;)

Funny how topics have not chaged much, I have been away from the forum for a while. But opinons sure have changed. I have used Ivermectin 1%injectable cattle wormer for over 20 years for all my critters from pigeons to dogs, even myself. It is not for cats or collies though and could kill them. I give my pigeons 2-3 drops in the mouth using an old eye drop bottle which I fill useing a syringe. Young or smaller birds get 2 drops and the larger ones get 3. When in doubt about dosage for a specic animal I just Google it. I have definately seen that it works well in pigeons. I clean the loft before dosing and then look carefully at the dropings after. I have seen it work within hours, finding passed round worms, usually just a few here and there, but a badly infested bird will pass a walnut sized ball of them! YUK!

Yours in the sport.

Don't overdo the Ivermectin, I think I did three years ago and I had a very bad season. I now use EASITOX one drop on the back of the neck, found it very effective and economical, think I got it from HYPERDRUG (on-line).
