Guest spin cycle Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 sorry if this is old ground but i'd like to know the best colour hen ( apart from yellow) to pair to a yellow cock, to get yellow ybs...or parents that have a chance of breeding yellows. thanks
pjc Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 if the cock is yellow it will breed a percentage of yellows with any colour but you will get a higher percentage if you can get a dilute hen or a hen with dilute gene.

OLDYELLOW Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 silver and yelows are dilutes of blue and red
Guest spin cycle Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 silver and yelows are dilutes of blue and red its unlikely i'll find a silver locally so red would be my best option ?
pjc Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 silver and yelows are dilutes of blue and red spot on
pjc Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 If the yellows a cock then use a red or mealy hen and you'll get some yellows but remember all the young will carry the yellow gene.
Guest cowboy Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 what if the hen is yellow and the cock is red will it been more red than yellow
pjc Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 unless the red cock carries the yellow gene you will not breed any yellows. The sons of the pair will cary yellow so by then pairing a son back to its mother will produce about 25% yellow
Guest Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 I have a Chocolate hen, What colour cock will I need to pair to her to produce chocolates
Guest Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 If the yellows a cock then use a red or mealy hen and you'll get some yellows but remember all the young will carry the yellow gene. A dilute cock (yellow) will produce all dilute daughters, regardless of the colour of the hen, all his sons will carry the dilute gene.

The sons of the pair will cary yellow so by then pairing a son back to its mother will produce about 25% yellow Pairing a cock carrying dilute, to a dilute hen will produce approximately 50% dilute offspring which will be cocks and hens.

Guest bigbok Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 well put indigo bob. pjc hens can not carry dilute they either are dilute or not to increase the chances of yellows both parents must carry' E' recessisive red mealy is not a dilute ashyellow is his dilute ether in bar one on a cheq pattern or barless creams dilute is a sex linked gene if a dilute cock is mated to a non dilute all dilutes will be daughters his sons will carry dilution mated back to his non dilute mother will give you %25 non dilute hens %25 dilute hens %25 dliute carrying cocks %25 cock non dilute carrying its a great gene that produces some lovely colours
REDCHEQHEN Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Its all very complicated (shrug)(shrug)(dizzy)
FoxesFan4Ever Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Hi all, Excuse my ignorance please but why would you want to produce dilutes? I have been told although not from anyone with any great authority that dilutes dont fly as well as normal colours and are unlikely to make the long distances. I have a silver who looks a nice YB and is always in the first bunch home but up to now they are only doing 10 - 15 miles. Just wondered anyway, if anyone can give me a bit of knowledge here I would be grateful. Thanks
pjc Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 I don't think the dilute gene effect flying ability but because it is dilute you don't see so many around to be raced.
Guest bigbok Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 i think you answered to main reason why dilute is not often seen in racing birds !! they are weak and do not tend to fly that well but in fancy pigeons these colours are highly desirable especially yellow self recessive red dilute i have attached two of my yesterday birds that did a lot of winning both here and in europe the darker one is a recessive red and the lighter bird a yellow hen hope you enjoy they could not fly on top of a transit van but are winners in their own right
pigeonpete Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 nice pics, the bottom 1 looks like its had his head chopped of :-)
