Guest Freebird Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 best thing for alge is concrete i e fill the pond with it im sick of trying why in quarrys is the water always clear Chriss. A big handfull of barley straw tied up tight. Either put it in your filter reservoir or tie a weight and sink it in the pond. This definitely works as I have used it. It takes a good 2 or 3 weeks to kick in. Do not keep changing the water as you will only be back to square one. You should only change 20% at the most every couple of months to remove any built up toxins if you have fish etc. The fact that there is algae means you have a good healthy pond and I'll bet that's why the doos liked to drink it. Now a question for you. I aquired two young birds the other day, just weaned and when I got them out the box the smaller of the two had a sore eye. Treated with golden eye and it seemed to get better but the wee bird seems very weak. I have it locked in a nestbox away from the others. This morning both eyes looked puffed up. Made sure it was eating and gave it some honey water. Don't want to loose it as it is a lovely wee doo but seems quite weak. It's nest mate is a fine healthy and strong bird. Any advice greatly appreciated. Cheers.
ZOOTY Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 hello new here be gentle just having a wiz round and read a few interesting chat sections this drew me in . I recently bought some Potassium permanganate off the web after a recommendation from a fellow pigeon mate and his advice. Then researched it!!! To use it to rinse out my shed after a big clean out at first, his father used it before him etc so i thought I'd take his advice, happy with results etc.Found all sorts for it since. bought from a web site called...errr. heres a link if it works on a chat but its the whole web address:- hope it helps anyone struggling like i did to source, and happy with web transaction,( alway dubious to buy off web) but good and happy. http://www.potassium-permanganate-online.com/index.html oh by the way lads barley straw works and only works because when it decomposes it releases hydrogen peroxide like potassium permanganate an oxider that breaks down and kills any organic matter,at 45 its amazing what you learn! toodle pip!

Guest strapper Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 2300 viewers can you tell me is this safe to put meds in with this never mix meds or any treatment with another.
edwards Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 the reason i ask if it steriled the warter clean would our meds have a better affect on the birds?
ch pied Posted July 5, 2009 Report Posted July 5, 2009 the reason i ask if it steriled the warter clean would our meds have a better affect on the birds?if you are going to use anti-bios of any kind , i myself woulden't use potassium permanganate to sterilise the water , as it might have an adverse effect with any anti-bio that it is mixed with , you could squeeze half a grapefruit into the drinker this will have sterilising effect & aid the absorption rate in the gut to an anti-bio . even then it might be best to de - chlorinate the water / by letting it leeche off over-night or boil & let cool. chlorine kill's microbe's as it will anti-bios
pjc Posted July 5, 2009 Report Posted July 5, 2009 and the birds looked healthy too . andy. They looked a picture but would like to know the correct qty to put in the drinking water.
ZOOTY Posted July 5, 2009 Report Posted July 5, 2009 hello, with the reading etc done on this material,i.e. dosing etc of pot permang, it was basically never stated so I go with my mates dose, just the dropping in of a crystal or two in my water, which are even smaller than salt, to just give the water a whisper of pink then i give to my pigeons and my chickens now. kills worms dead! I mean a couple of crystals ! about a grain of salt making it a great solution to use and so cost effective. The 100g I bought from http://www.potassium-permanganate-online.com/index.html will last me a life time. Well I thought it would till I found a few more cheap sterilising uses and then did me feet!. Its a amazing all rounder but why can't we buy it locally? Its been used in the koi hobby market for yonks but hard to get, strange.

Fair Play Posted July 5, 2009 Report Posted July 5, 2009 Sixty years ago we used to use it in the goldfish tanks to kill off bacteria that brought on fin rot. I think it is better used in the bath water
