lightning fast Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 What, if anything, did you do different last year, to prevent your birds getting YBS Birds were not on the darkness??? that’s the only thing I can think off, but I did not compete at the young bird racing with the darkness boys... I have also found that the symptoms get better year by year, or maybe it experience now, as soon as I see a bird retain corn, at night YBS is on its way..

The first time I seen it was 2002, and the guys loft I was at , there were birds dying and it was the first race, all birds were like razors, He got told of nyfuamycin and treated for a week missing the seconed race and took the first 4 in the Fed the 3rd race so I think they will over come it and race well. most that is

Interesting observation Do you mean they have still got full crops and not digesting the food

We had a lad in our club who used to get YBS every year but was still the top prize winner in the fed. It was his opinion that the youngsters that got over it quickly where the ones that were topping the fed.

I tend to agree, as I think a too clean lofts does not allow birds to build up an immune system. (I am not saying allow loft floors to become damp with droppings) but a dry loft with deep litter, to dry up the droppings, seem to have less problems with YBS than a loft that is spotless. Since I started back up 2 years ago, after a break of nearly seven years, I have only cleaned my loft floors out twice a year (perches and nest boxes weekly( and in those two years, I have never had a sign of YBS
Guest kevin b Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 ybs hold corn in there crops over night then bring it up next morning others eat it then thay do the same, This could also be a bacterial infection of the crop. The crop closes up preventing the food to pass through, then the body starts to eat its self up giving green watery droppings and eventually if not treated death. Nystatin is great for this and if seen early enough should sort out the problem before it goes too far. Intresting point on clean verses deep litter in the loft, wonder how many on here have got ybs on the deep litter. Kevin
pigeonpete Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 well to be honest, im not so clean on the ybs, they only get cleaned out once a week, till yb racing starts, i just dont have time, spending the time i do have on the o/bs. And touch wood, i dont think ive ever had it, had the odd bird go back, but never the whole lot. a few of the top guys round here say they get it every year, And top the fed a fair few times, so they must come round :-)

I suppose if your used to getting it you can hit it at the start and minimise the worse effects as well. kevin
kirky Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 my ybs are on deep litter all season, a new water bowl is put in for them at the start when weaned off it is never washed out only rinced does not matter if it goes brown or green as this will help build there immune system, you can be too clean that is a fact. also i do not use medications, my vet is mr wheeliebin.
marmite Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 havent had it last couple years touch wood wont get it this year but ive found when i used to clean them out reguarly i get it but now i dont clean them at all till racings over i havent had it maybe thats the answer but who knows and i just use cider vinegar 2 days a week sun/mon but maybe ive just got lucky atb clive
Guest joshdonlan Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 ive been told the same not too clean to much, just scrape boxes and perches and keep them on deep litter. Also heard Aad Schaerlackens say that when he had it he let it run its cause and kill the weak off, after a couple of seasons of this, he said he hasnt had it since, so obviously built up immunity. I suppose this is ok if you have enough birds to do it :-/

Just watch them very close and if your not sure get hold of a vet. The sooner you spot something amiss the quicker you can react. Kevin

Kevin Agree 100% Kev , as I said I could have watched a top flyers birds die , he treated and won the fed averages for the following 3 years....
