Lennut Tar Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 "What do I do". Yesterday !!!!!!!!! I gave my cocks a toss for the first time in a local unit here, (3000 birds etc) just to give them a bit of experience going up with the mob etc. "Crap toss" ;D ;D but never mind ???????. Anyway !!!!!!!!, right on dark this cock makes a belly landing on top of the stock loft & just sat there etc. Stupid thing I first thought at the time, because he didn't move, & eventually !!!!!!!!!! I had to get the ladder out to get up on the roof to catch him (Not impressed I can tell you) till I saw he had both legs badly broken & I wish to save him because of his effort to get home etc, thou the odds are not looking too good I'm afraid for the poor bugger at the moment. So all you experts here ;D ;D ;D tell me the best way to immobilize him till he can recover fully, thou the chances are for what I see at the moment :'( :'( :'( not the best, & he will be a one legged pigeon unfortunately. PS, First time for everything, & I've never had this happen before in my life. Enjoy.
gangster Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 i would use a sock to suspend him and splint the legs up...
ChrisMaidment08 Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 to be honest i would line up leg and tape it will heal
Guest peter.j Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 boddy and ridewood do leg splints and a body harnes for this sort of thing.......pete
REDCHEQHEN Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 use cut down cotton buds or matchsticks as splints and bind with tape (I used micropore tape) not too tight to allow for swelling - I suppose it depends where leg is broken
Ronnie Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 You can make a sling out of a pair of womens tights. If a sling is out of the question strap it up with tape and leave him in a box by himeself so he's not running round on it.The problem u may have is wether it sets well enough to race with.
Lennut Tar Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 boddy and ridewood do leg splints and a body harnes for this sort of thing.......pete Thanks fellows !!!!!!!! Peter J ;D ;D ;D do they export ;) . Enjoy.
pjc Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Agree with splint both legs out behind him and imobilise him in either a sock or one of your stockings. You can either suspend him or we used to just lay them between 2 bricks with food and water infront where they can reach and leave them like this for 10 days. Phil
DOVEScot Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Thanks fellows !!!!!!!! Peter J ;D ;D ;D do they export ;) . Enjoy. Log on and see what it looks like, really easy to make something similar, I have repaired ones with one leg broken but not two at the same time http://www.everythingforpets.com/injury_harness.pet/use.id.5.item_id.1267.dept.0/
chichichi Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 we had 1 last year,, we used black insulating tape,, not too tight,, tape him up and lock him away from the others for a week or so,, he will slowely start to stand after a couple of weeks,, he will limp for the rest of his life but will fly like normal.. the very best of luck ant
Guest bigda Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 your going to strap him up for two weeks get a pair of tights cut out hole in them for legs stretch out the tights nail them to nest box so the pigeon is four inches of the floor of box you will have to hand feed it for 2 days till it gets over the shock then give it water and vitamins through syringe for two days then put pot of chuck in front of it and a pot of water, for the leg splint get a plastic straw cut it about 5inch get a piece of wire put through straw bend straw in a u shape place birds foot at the bottom align leg and tape up the hole leg individually if the both are broke don't bandage both to gether the wire has to be quite stiff say one strand from chestnut fence type and you can remove it in 3 weeks :'(
Guest Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 the plastic harnis is not that cleaver ,i used one ,the sock or tights works better ATBles
Roland Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Had a young hen do exactly the same, both legs more than one break. I strapped legs with Sellotape and made sure it fed and watered. I was - like you, impressed with it's determination ... Left fpor ten days and took of tape with warm soapy water. Healed a treat and flew Pau for me twice. Never ind the cobblers about Air / breathe like in elastoplasts etc. Old myth. When I get a bad cut, deepish, I pull the cut close together with and hold tight till bleeding stops... then use sudocream on a elastoplase. Then I wrap and sucure with masking tape. Two days later I change dressing do again etc. using a little butter. Hardly ever scars. One when fitting a carpet I really slash a big cut in the leg ... blunt blade and hurrying -.I held real tight together and got me son to get the copydex out - a Latex glue. I smothered the wound in side the cut and got a lift to the hospital. Yes it hardly ever bled and was nicely together wen the stitches were put in. Surgeons use latex by the way, when they can't stitch awkward places in your insides.

Merlin Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Get some suitable Electrical cable, outer core cut to suitable size, slit, open an apply all around breaks,it closes again, very effective splints, hang in sock,in box for 10 day with legs extended behind, being all thumbs I find this system most effective when fixing breaks.

Phil Some very intersting comments etc for my predicament, with my wee pigeon "Thanks everyone" :) But what I have done, mainly because one break was at the top of one leg where it joins the body & I had to completely stop him from moving as best that I could for this to heal to a reasonable fashion etc. I will just call it "The brick trick" ;D ;D ;D. First I made a bed for him out of a square plastic seedling box, cut down just big enough for him to sit in with pine needles, to make it bit more comfortable as a bed, with a hole cut in it for his legs to hang through which have been taped up to the best of my ability :'( :'( :'( along with the help of nurse Beth :) (She who must be obeyed) ;). This was then placed on 2 bricks, so his legs are free from touching anything & no weight on them etc, then 2 more bricks on them again, with a lid on top of that with another brick on the lid. It all looks a bit strange ????? & he hasn't quite figured out yet what's quite going on "PMSL" but thats just a minor detail, shall we say. He is also quite able to reach the feed & water in front of him fortunately & will in time just have to get used to being confined in a small space for the next week or so. As many of us know, lifes a bi*ch at times & I could imagine now, thats what he is thinking right this moment poor thing :'( :'( :'(. Enjoy.
Guest Vic Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Kill it! Don't pussy foot with 'em. Would you have done the same with an also ran?

I've found best the sling or hammock with woman's tights [but be careful which woman you get them from one leg broken found the best way ,,leave it,,,, ,it'll learn within a day to hop and eat and drink and will be walking in a fortnight , I've tried splints , plaster of Paris, tape etc ,, I've found they are better left alone ,yb,s heal in no time [off course depends how bad] ankle part, elbow part,,no prob , but at the very top , a little more difficult ,and will be left maimed ,
Lennut Tar Posted June 16, 2008 Author Report Posted June 16, 2008 Kill it! Don't pussy foot with 'em. Would you have done the same with an also ran? ;D ;D ;D "NO" Know way known ;) , would I have ever wasted my time etc. But believe it or not !!!!!!!!! he is of my best stock cock "True" & if I can get him well enough to go over to the stock loft. I will be like a pig in sh*t, even if one leg may be a wee bit shorter than the other :) & he is on crutches. Besides !!!!!!!!, I've been on here to long now "PMSL" & have become Soft, stupid & senile & if I don't watch myself ;) I will have a loft full of old age pensioners etc, & we all know ;D ;D ;D there is no future in that. Enjoy.
Guest Vic Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Good luck to you in your predicament, especially to the bird in question.
Guest Freebird Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Ha, I had this when I flew the birds in my teens. Used one of my mum’s tight legs. Cut a hole in toe for his head and a hole for the legs to dangle. Suspended a couple of inches of the floor with three lengths of string, two at the birds shoulders and the third above the base of his tail. Used ice lolly sticks and wool to bind his legs and keep them straight. Placed feed and water within reach and he was there for around 2 weeks. When I removed the wool and sticks his legs were well swollen but to my amazement he could walk. Bird wasn't anything special but I was only around 12/13 years old and only had a few youngsters and to be honest I couldn't have given up on him as he raced home with 2 broken legs, which in my book is a great achievement for any living thing. This has brought back a lot of memories and I hope your bird lives on to breed winners ( as long as he can get the LEG OVER ) Ahahaha!

"LEG OVER" ;D ;D ;D that's not on his mind at the moment ;) Far from it I'm afraid & in the future hopefully ?????????, he may have to come up with some new tricks :) if he ever wants to do that again. Poor little bugger !!!!!!!!, he is in his bed :) , with his legs dangling in mid air & not able to move etc, because I have him taped up with non stick medical tape "PMSL" & all he can do is eat & drink & give me the evil eye. PS, What we have to do for pigeons at times :) . Enjoy !!!!!!!!, but my little mate is not doing any of that at the moment, & have no doubt on that.
jimmy white Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 well good luck to you lennut .if hes a young bird i bet you will be amazed in a couple of weeks ,, hell be fine ,,,best of luck
