Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help. I have a two year old stock cock that is twisting its head sideways the whole time. I dont know if it is paramyxo as they all my birds were innoculated last year july. I am really worried about the bird as I paid a lot of money for it. Is there anything I can do?

Thank you

David

take him out from rest but in my view anything that does it is highly suspect of para and please just cos you did them it does not mean they wont get it

yes you must isolate! is it flying? any joints swollen? vet would be best bet, as it could be a number of things and without anyone seeing, would not be fair to say whats wrong with it! good luck

Hi Guys,

I have an appointment this evening with an Avian Spesialist to hopefully it will get sorted. I have been advised to innoculate the rest of my birds straight away. This is really one of those moments that I wish I never started up with pigeons. Should just have admired from a distance.  :(

A good avian vet are worth there weight in gold , if most sought a vet out at the start there management would be better , i hope this does not deter you from keeping pigeons its just with any animal they need specific care and the best way to know your pigeons / pets are healthy is to test regulary  :) but even the odd ailment can baffle from time to time , i hope you get your birds sorted all the best Regards  Mark  :)

I have just fed the bird in question and he eats fine. His droppings are firm too. Could it be that he has maybe bumped his neck and its just sore?

that is a possibilty but i find if birds have knocked themself they huddle up and try to stay still till better , twitching would make it worse or feel pain , id still get checked , better to er on the side of caution  :) peace of mind if nothing else  :)

No point worrying or trying to second-guess the vet now that you have an appointment.  :). For me, it's a good sign that you have only one bird 'ailing' so chin up and best of luck.

90% cert its para, will have to hand feed  for about  4 weeks  at least, if  you  want to save it and treat for 10 weeks

with  amoxacilian  type  drug  its  a  tough one to  keep going to  :o :o

Well I went to the vet with the bird and because the droppings were firm and the bird was eating the vet ruled out paramyxo. He still sent off for a blood test which we will get back sometime next week. He prescribed Baytril and Metacam which I have to give him for ten days. Will update as soon as I know anymore. Thanks for all the help.

I know this may sound stoopid but given that the bird is feeding o.k. is it not just irritated by something on the head? Are the eyes/ceres o.k. as it is possibly just eye wiping. Any itching etc. around the eye area is not scratched by the feet (for obvious reasons) but merely wiped/rubbed on the back of bird. Just a thought.

well its a sort of a blind treatment baytril as we all know is a brilliant product and usually with pigeons when an illness comes it comes in two or threes with batrill being a broad spectrum antibiotic it will clean the bird of a lot  of illness and even if it don't clear the major problem when the blood tests come back and a different drug may need to be used the bird will be clear of other illness and allow the other drug to work a lot better my bet on the whole thing is some sort of salmonella may even still be para

Pleased that it is not any of the major diseases associated with 'head twisting'. I didn't wan't to ask before, false leads etc, but wondered if the bird gapes (opens its beak wide) before or during twist? Wondered if there was something stuck in the throat / gullet and irritating it?

Baytril and Metacam brings back memories of my own hen's treatment, Baytril as you will know is an antibiotic, Metacam is a med to ease 'arthritic' joints. She had a bacterial infection of a shoulder joint.

Well the bird is still twisting its neck and the droppings are still firm too. Also the bird is able to eat properly and is not missing the corn. I just pray this is not paramyxo and that the bird will get better soon. :o
