Guest Owen Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 How old are these birds? Are they fly/walking out side? Are they walking about in a garden? Are they pecking poisonous plants? Do they have access to privet? When did you notice there condition falling off? There are a wide range of things that could cause this problem, so if you want to ask for help you must give us more details. On the other hand you should shut them in the loft and get to a good avian Vet tomorrow.

Guest Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 When its this quick it has to be poisoning. I heard this before, and i'm sure it was a rat poison, but not 100% sure. You need to clean them out to prevent further loss. Use 1/4 cup of baking soda to 1 pint of warm water, then take a childs ear syringe and fill with the water and put it in the birds mouth clear to the back so as not to strangle the bird, flush and then come up from under the crop and force the contents of the crop out the birds beak do this three times and it will be cleaned out.
Guest dibble Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 think terry mcarthy on pigeon chat had something similar last year turned out to be streppicoccus {mispelt} but not sure which strain best get checked out by vet asap, he said worse thing ever seen in pigeons

Not necessary the case mickb, there was something similar happening to pigeons a few years back which affected both young and old birds, a form of Herpesvirus was diagnosed.

Guest bigda Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 how long where the birds sick, sitting hunched up feathers blown siting on the floor, as i dont think they have been poisoned more like adenovirus circovirus and if untreated 2-3 days max then death, before death the puewk up green slimy water.
REDCHEQHEN Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 ANY OTHER DISEASES YOU LOT CAN THINK OF THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED For Gods sake
Guest B@C WARD Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 I think its Samoneilla. The same thing happened to us when we were given 4 young birds and put them in with our young 1s. Let them out to fly. Were fine to start with then started lying on loft gasping for breath and looking stunned. within afew hrs 19 were dead. we thought it was poisoning too. treat all pigeons for samoneilla.
just ask me Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 question are birds getting sick also any swollen joints
Guest Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 ANY OTHER DISEASES YOU LOT CAN THINK OF THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED For Gods sake lol, i was thinking the same. Look at what the guy says, all fit and healthy when they went out! I never mentioned any use of medication, no need, won't help them. What i suggested won't hurt them, but needs to be done asap! Streptococci bovis is what Terry's birds had but i think his birds caught it racing.
Guest bigda Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 ANY OTHER DISEASES YOU LOT CAN THINK OF THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED For Gods sake take a chill pill mate, the info is sparse and sudden death is a concern, and has links to circovirus, had dealings with the top vet in Scotland from auchincruive and he has trouble giving you a cure, for the same symptoms and even when fresh killed, the virus disappears from the bird within minutes

I am not too sure if this is correct but I overheard my dad say he was given a young bird some time ago and put them with are young birds, also all the things you said happened to your birds are happening to mine I really hope this is not the case so I will inform him when he gets back from where ever he has gone about the info you guys have given. Thank you
Guest Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 take a chill pill mate, the info is sparse and sudden death is a concern, and has links to circovirus, had dealings with the top vet in Scotland from auchincruive and he has trouble giving you a cure, for the same symptoms and even when fresh killed, the virus disappears from the bird within minutes I was told that circovirus does show signs of illness, which can mimic other diseases (ie cocci, weigt loss lethargy etc) thats why it so hard to diagnose without a blood test, and its usually a secondary infection that kills the bird. The vet i spoke to (belgian) referred to it as an "aids" in pigeons as it virtually destroys the immunity to infection and disease.
