try just giving milk to drink

I thought pigeons could not digest milk, or is it just certain parts of the milk that they cannot digest :-/

I havnt been aware of yb sickness this year .. yet.  I was advised to put some cider vinegar in the drinkers to counteract it.

Can anyone say if there are there certain strains of pigeons which will handle this better than others as I have noticed that the outcrosses dont take this as bad as my original birds? - hybrid vigor I guess?

Sorry to stray from thread!

here goes and a good preventative measure , add a teaspoon of cinamon and a knode of grated root ginger and garlic and carrot juice in water once a month i aint had yb sickness for 8 years and you'l get shinny necks to boot as well ( even on your natural birds ). The other treatment is garden lime in a bucket of water and feed them the water from the top add the above ingredients as well.Yoghurt on the corn is good as well, 1/3of a pot of  live natural yoghurt with a days feed add a citrus fruit and brewers yeast . Canker is the main cause to infection keep this down and you'l be half way to solving the battle.

there is no known cure for youngbird sickness, but there are lots of medications that will help them get over it.some quicker then others.

ur biggest problem with having the sickness is a secondary infection ,which is mainly e coli..which is wot kills ur birds.

one of the biggests myths in fanciers is that only youngbirds get the sickness..while its known that oldbirds can have it but because of their imune system with age ,it hardly effects tem.

only slight symtoms.

youngbird sickness was discovered in youngbirds ...hence the name.

i do believe that there are 2 strains of this adenovirus.

i have had this in my youngbirds this year and eventually used baytril.which in turn put them into a moult.

this ended my start to youngbird racing till later comebacks.

baytil is a wonder drug but can also be a nuisance..but its the best of two evils.

while the fural family of medications are good they only stay in the gut and they dont enter the blood stream where the virus could be.

batril does this!

yoghurt will not get rid of ur sickness, but is good to give after ur treament.

vinegar is known to have good properties to prevent but not cure them.

hope this helps .

Not meant to be a Smart Alec answer, just my opinion: the best cure to YBS is to make sure your birds never get it in the first place.

I've never had YBS and I try to keep it that way by keeping things as near nature as is possible given that it is a racing loft. Definitely no Darkness, no Widowhood, no Medications (other than Paramyxo jag) and vitamins & minerals given just about daily in their raw state thro : grain & cereal mixtures, lettuce, cabbage, kale, oregano, thyme, cress; and out a bottle: echinacea, aloe, gingko, St Johns wort, (and when I can get it) elderberry. Finally, cider vinegar & honey after the race, garlic for the weekend after the race, and a probiotic every month

I AGREE WITH DOO RACER NOT HAD A PROBLEM SINCE JAGGING AT 3 TO 4 WEEKS  Y/BIRD SICKNESS HAS BEEN SEEN ON SOME CASES ALLIED TO PARA.  DONT AGREE WITH     JOE61   MOST SEEM TO GET IT BEFORE THEY START RACING.   MY ADVICE ALWAYS JAG YOR Y/BIRDS BETWEEN 3 AND 4 WEEKS     WITHOUT FAIL

Never seen yb sickness since I started jagging at 3 weeks for PMV. Cider vinegar can be useful is a crop fungal infection is suspected. Just a teaspoon to a ltr of water

That advice came from well known pigeon vets. I think it had to do with getting the young bird to tackle a disabled virus as a practice run before circovirus came visiting. Most writers say YBS is a combination of virus bacteria & fungus etc acting together, the initial viral attack allowing the other secondary illnesses to gain a foothold. Stands to reason if it starts with a virus and that is stopped dead in its tracks, there's no secondary illness gaining a foothold, and no YBS.
