found a pigeon Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Hi - I have found a ringed pigeon, but I know nothing about how to look after him. Some advice on how I might find the owner and what to do with him in the interim would be extremely welcome. At the moment he's in the spare room in an old dog cage, with a bowl of Alpen & water - which I suspect is far from ideal!! thanks
REDCHEQHEN Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Where are you from? Look at the ring on the pigeon - it will begin GB 200? followed by a letter - followed by a number or NEHU OR WHU or NWHU or SHU Find the ring number - and put it on here The food and water is fine for now
found a pigeon Posted May 26, 2008 Author Report Posted May 26, 2008 We are in Wales - his number is NEHU 2206 BOR2053. He's been hanging around the village for a week apparently and flew into my shop last night. Seems in very good health. Thanks for your help on this Redcheqhen.
tippler1 Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 the phone num is 0191 262 5440 call them but its bank holiday
peterpau Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 If you were a bit more specific with where you are there might be a fancier near by who will help. Nearest town would be good. Any seed and water will be fine for the pigeon.
found a pigeon Posted May 26, 2008 Author Report Posted May 26, 2008 OK sorry, I'm in south Wales between Tenby and Carmarthen, by the coast.
REDCHEQHEN Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 OK sorry, I'm in south Wales between Tenby and Carmarthen, by the coast. There are pigeon fanciers in your neck of the woods - definately some at Milford Haven and we have some Welsh fanciers on here
Novice Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 If by any chance you have peanuts in the house the bird may accept the kernals from these as an emergency measure.
found a pigeon Posted May 26, 2008 Author Report Posted May 26, 2008 peanuts I have! great! coz the Alpen isn't doing it for him - why didn't I think of that, duh.
tippler1 Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 lol read some advice on here about novice and beginners it may help you
found a pigeon Posted May 26, 2008 Author Report Posted May 26, 2008 OK will do- the peanuts are going down a treat however - thank you!
Novice Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Provided it's eating that's good. Try to not over do it on the peanuts meantime. Possibly about a dozen now then try again in 2 hours time. It's just like ourselves we can overload the system.
found a pigeon Posted May 27, 2008 Author Report Posted May 27, 2008 OK well he ate about 30 peanuts over two meals yesterday. I've phoned the secretary for NEHU this morning so the wheels are in motion. Thank you everyone for all your help here. He must be a very bored bird, poor thing. Hopefully things will move forward now though. As he's a long way from home what do you guys do? courier them? I was reading that excercise is important for them, should I let him outside? would he come back?
Peckedhen Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 Thirty peanuts is rather a lot, they love peanuts and will gorge themselves given chance. Do you have any wild bird food or dried peas? Have you given him a deep dish of water? They dip their beaks almost to their nostrils to suck up the water. The owner should contact you now to arrange for the bird to be collected. He might arrange for another fancier to pick it up or, he will arrange for a courier (usually Amtrak) to collect it. Don't let the bird out, he will most probably not return and may not be lucky enough to find someone as kind as you next time. He doesn't need exercise now, he needs a long rest as he will be exhausted from trying to find his way home when he got lost.
found a pigeon Posted May 27, 2008 Author Report Posted May 27, 2008 OK thanks - I don't have wild bird seed, but I'll get some today. Could all the nuts be why she's got runny poo? Her water dish, by chance, is quite deep - certainly deeper than her bill, but I'll get a deeper one in there just in case. I've opened the door of the cage and she's having a wander around the spare room, but I won't let her outside. thanks for the advice!
Peckedhen Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 I'm not sure about the peanuts causing the runny droppings. Her water dish sounds fine, lucky choice. You could try adding a couple of drops of vinegar to her water. Cider vinegar would be best but, if you don't have that then ordinary vinegar would do. That should help tp dry them up unless there is an underlying illness causing it. :-/ So, it's a girl is it? ;D I've been saying 'he' !! ;D I'm no expert, hopefully some more knowledgeable members can offer advice re the droppings.
pjc Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 I wouldn't worry about the dropping for the moment, the bird may have been out for some time, be exhausted etc. Once he's had some decent food for a couple of days and his digestive system has got back to norm his droppings should firm up again. Phil
found a pigeon Posted May 27, 2008 Author Report Posted May 27, 2008 So, it's a girl is it? I've been saying 'he' !! I did the classic novice sexing technique............ I took a long hard look and said yes, it definately looks like a girl!!! Thanks for advice regarding the droppings, we have some cider vinegar so I'll do that.
