Eventually it dried up and fell off. I spoke to Gorgon Chalmers (canadian Vet) about this and he said it was caused by a virus. The pigeon was lost the following year which may or may not have been caused by this condition.

Guest shadow Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 could be a protien lump put garlic in the water and lighten the feed with barley they normally dry up and fall off
billy wilson Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 i used to dab iodine on every day two or three times it used to shrink it in no time it dries up then falls off put the iodine on very thick so it soaks in
jimmy white Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 these are often called protein lumps [why, i dont know] some say too much protein , but sometimes only one bird gets this ?,, allthough they look bad , their normally easy cured and cause no further damage to the bird, i have in the past ,,tied cotton arround the base of it pretty tight , this stops the circulation , to it , then it drops off,
terry mccarthy Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 tie a piece of horse hair or cotton round the lump not breaking the skin tighten it everyday for 3 days it will then drop off there nothing to worry about by tying it round the lump it cuts the blood off to it so it just drys up and drops off all they are is balls of blood really personally i dont think anything to do with protein
DOVEScot Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 This is what we have encountered, all pigeons made a full recovery, it is a pigeons problem to deal with protien that is why it only effects them individually :-/ http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1211379455/s-0/highlight-lump/#num0 http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1216403970/s-11/highlight-blood/#num11

Guest slugmonkey Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 This sounds like a spider bite to me we have brown recluse here and this sounds exactly like the initial symptoms of a bite Do you have any posinous spiders there ???
Guest slugmonkey Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 I did a google search and found that you guys are having an explosion in the "False Widow" population due to global warming ( their words not mine ) maybe this is what happened
REDCHEQHEN Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 I did a google search and found that you guys are having an explosion in the "False Widow" population due to global warming ( their words not mine ) maybe this is what happened The UK is not subject to global warming its missed us out - we're still waiting for summer (shrug)
Guest Vic Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 These Pigeon Boils were present when I was a kid. It's more of an eyesore to the fancier when he finds one for the first time, they look serious, but nothing to lose sleep on, it will drop off before you do. LOL
Guest slugmonkey Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 Our summers have been cooler as well it seems global warming affects the poles more than the middle lattitudes
DOVEScot Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 Our summers have been cooler as well it seems global warming affects the poles more than the middle lattitudes That would explain it because we are inundated with Poles ;D ;D ;D
Guest slugmonkey Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 I have never seen any type of boil that has the two marks like are being described here but I have seen a lot of spider bites and they will almost always have two fang marks where the bite was, almost ALL spiderbites are toxic to some extent and may result in something as minor as swelling and itching to something as sever as paralysis and death Spiders inject venom into victims through fangs this venom contains enzymes that dissolves tissue the spider then sucks this " soup " out of the victim one of the things that spider bites have in common is the dark color around the bite where the tissue is dying

Guest slugmonkey Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 some people are more immune to bites than others I got bit by a recluse and it rotted a spot about the size of a quarter a friend of mine got bit and nearly lost an arm where you are bit has a part to do with it as well I am sure this would hold true in birds as well
Guest slugmonkey Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 I have had protien blisters and some toumors on my birds but I have never had them bleed this is what leads me to the spider bite theory
DOVEScot Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 I have had protien blisters and some toumors on my birds but I have never had them bleed this is what leads me to the spider bite theory I followed advice from members and tied thread round this lump and in time it fell off and the pigeon made a full recovery :-/
Guest Freebird Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 That would explain it because we are inundated with Poles ;D ;D ;D Aye yer spot on there Dunc.
Guest Freebird Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 I did a google search and found that you guys are having an explosion in the "False Widow" population due to global warming ( their words not mine ) maybe this is what happened Shooosh!
