Guest Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 I only send those that physiologically capable of doing the longest for me in the NFC and that is 556 miles, I see no point in sending birds that have Carl Lewis abilities to a marathon. But Peter interested to know how far you send your yearlings
Guest slugmonkey Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 I try to breed birds for all distance I dont expect my sprinters to win at 600 but I do belive they should be durable enough to get home As 2 year olds I seperate them into distance categories
Guest bakes Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 what treatments does everyone give there birds my ybs have been wormed, cankered, coxyed waiting for my mate to vaccine them for para what do you prefure for treatment i give my birds ascapilla tablets for worms, appertex tablets for coxy and spartrix tablets for canker all the best bakes.
Guest BRYANBROCK Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 a few years back i was one that never treated for anything only injection for paramaxo my birds looked okay but they lacked that i am ready to race look then a good freind of mine namely IAN MCKAY put me right with a course of treatment within 2 weeks the birds looked 10 times better and i have now stuck to this ever since and had no problems at all so i say to all who dont treat for anything start now you will find an amazing difference to your birds . in this day of racing birds there is so much diseases out there i think those who do not treat are heading for serious problems maybe not now but it will come i can assure you GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL BRYAN
peterpau Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Peter how far do you send your yearlings? We've been here 2 years and I have 12 birds bred either september 07 or may 08 this is my whole team yearlings and late breds all going to Bordeaux 515 mile on 1st of August with BBC. See you at Salisbury I tell a lie I have my Perth/Palamos cock and a hen that scored from Lamballe young bird that won't be going. Thats me lot 14 in total and similar amount of young 'uns.

Good good but don't use the same stuff all the time. Treat on a 1 month cycle, after they return from racing. Cocci 1 week kanker next worms next then a week off.

Peter good luck but that wasn't quite the question, how far would you send them or what is the furthest you would send them if this is different
peterpau Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 My goals a few years ago were. The longest race I could for young and old north and south 500 mile yearlings. Just Lerwick left to do. Been 25 years since I sent to Lerwick.

My aim in suggesting to Kev he medicate was out of friendship no matter how misguided some may think. Ian was obviously being a good friend to you and I believe if Kev followed similarly he would see quite an improvement. I don't think there's much more I can say, it's obviously only my point of view and I'm not trying to force anyone to folow this route. As you say Bryan, good luck to everyone, there are less fanciers than ever, but the standards seem to get better! So I'll refrain from any more posts I've had my say but I certainly look forward to further discussion it's the best way I'll learn!

Tony C Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 This reminds me of Vic's thread on Paratyphoid.......... pigeons under performing, pigeons look well handle well exercise well but something's just not right. Not saying Paratyphoid is the problem but Vic treated it as such.
Ronnie Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 No he won'thave, he was talking about next year Haha and in the world o fpigeons the chances are he will go top the national and say "no need to treat em now" A great thread and very informative Good luck from saints mate.
Guest Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 DID IT WORK ?? If you go to this link and click section D that is Kev's section, he's not in yet there aren't many home, tough race to our location, we are in the sw corner of England http://www.nationalflyingclub.co.uk/ResultsForm.php
Guest kev d Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 hi all , things went a bit pear shaped while waiting for the birds to home i stayed at the loft till 7.00pm none home had to leave the loft cos we had friends round for a meal he,s not very well my friend paul is having treatment for prostate cancer so this meal was to cheer him and his wife up and have a laugh . so i could not check the loft till this morning i had one waiting for me to let him in at 7.00am what time did he come i havent a clue , i know i have let the pigeon down by not being there but i did not want to let my friend down as well and family and friends come first in my book . i did not clock him in but looking at the result i would have been about in the top 40 in the section and about 550 in the open thats going on first bird timed in only . thanks for all your comments , cheers kev
Guest Freebird Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 A noble gesture mate. What goes around comes around and you will be rewarded for your compassion. Must have been hard though, He He!
Guest kev d Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 just thought i would let you know i had my old birds droppings tested by homesidelofts and it,s the first time ever for me to have them tested . round worm zero hair worm count 15 eggs on slide is a high count cocci count above average . so looking at that yes they need treatment and i will treat them this weekend and through out the racing season next year and from now on i will get them tested on a regular basis if that does not work is it the birds or do i need shooting . cheers every one
gorsy bank lofts Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 fresh air and rest are 2 of the best medications you can get and cost nothing, suprising how many people dont take advantage of whats free and think drugs must be better cus it costs you. same with pigeons why would a bird breed you more winners or win more if it cost you 1k rather than nothing. regards lyndon
Guest kev d Posted August 8, 2009 Report Posted August 8, 2009 hi lyndon , my birds are on open hole 12 hrs aday and i only fly in the NFC and they only get 2 or 3 races a year and there training thats all nothing else this year they have been well off the pace so i got there droppings tested and it told me they need treating my birds are not over worked and when there in the loft they spend most of there time in the aviary so they get fresh air 24 , 7 so lyndon i think the birds need treating i need to work harder with them and if im honest i need better quality birds to compeat with the big boys . cheers kev
