i have had an outbreak of the dreaded squirts in my stock loft.there are 2 cocks and 3 hens that are very, very loose.i have also lost a late bred squeaker, went light and then died.a freind who has vast experience in this field diagnosed coccidiosis, apparently passed on to the youngsters by the old birds.they have all been treated with coxoid and are improving every day.a lesson learned for me.even though i vaccinated for pmv and paratyphoid, this one got passed me.

going light or young bird sickness are old terms for a disease called circovirus. loose droppings , not eating .rapid weight loss and in 10% of the cases ..death. it is the same as human aids , its not the circovirus the kills the bird but it lowers the immunity system and the secondary viruses such as ecoli and sam that cause the problem . check it out on the net it will give give you more information on it . ps there is no cure the birds either get over it or die

Rife in this area mate, fingers crossed I'm clear at the mo.If you know you have cocci,I think baycox is the best. The droppings are usually dark green and oily to look at,if your birds have the squirts as you put it I would think they have another problem.JMO

Did you have them tested before treatment?

one of my birds was showing signs of something,i knew not what,so i had its droppings tested and was told that the 'cocci' count was highbut thats all that was showing.

A high cocci count is normally caused by something else which brings the bird down and from then the cocci take over.

correct, hence the need for a re-test, firstly to see if another problem has taken hold and secondly to see if the treatment has worked!

Should always have a routine test and then if treatment required a post treatment test!

if you seem to be continualy getting problems i would look carefully at your loft and management. A healthy environment, good food etc will allow the birds to build a natural imunity to problems but if the environment is wrong you will get problems.

It is sometimes a good idea to invite a local good flyer to have a look at your set up as they maybe able to see whats wrong.

i thought youngbird sickness was adenovirus?...and not circovirus which i thought was a different disease. :)

heres an section which explains about circo virus...in which it mentions adeno virus as a seperate condition.

To illustrate this important point, case studies of this disease indicated that pigeons infected by circoviruses had a variety of other infections as well -- for example, those caused by Chlamydia sp. (the cause of a condition called variously, chlamydiosis, or psittacosis when it occurs in psittacine birds, and ornithosis when it occurs in other classes of birds, etc.), canker organisms, adenovirus, paramyxovirus, poxvirus, herpesvirus, moulds, as well as infections caused by E. coli and Salmonella (paratyphoid) species of bacteria

bad news, wharever is going through my old birds has now reached my youngsters.a test revealed a very high cocci count in my old birds, which is what i have been treating them all for.today i noticed a few young birds with very wet droppings.they are exercising well though and i cant report any change in behaviour, appetite is good to.i have had quite a few different suggestions to what it might be,so now i am totally mystified again.it all started about 4 weeks ago when i noticed that a late bred squeaker was suffering with very very wet droppings,i immeadiately had the droppings tested, which was when i discovered the high cocci count it was suggested at the time that it had been passed to the youngster from the parent bird who was also suffering with wet droppings.i must stress that it involves a total of 8 birds which have been seperatred from the rest as a precaution.the youngster got worse and worse and died a week later,he got so weak that he could not feed or drink.the rest of the affected birds a mixture of old and young look like pictures and are feeding, acting and exercising normally.a freind has taken away samples of droppings and blood today to try to find out exactly what is going on,all i can do now is wait and see what the results are.as the problem is spreading i have confined all the birds to the loft.

maybe useing the word squirts was a little to over the top.the droppings are very watery but there is some substance to them. :)
