I agree with everything that Leighton has said except for one small detail. If you want to use barley, and I use lots, it should be best quality feed barley. Not malting barley.

A lot of birds have bad droppings because the loft is not right. As Leighton says, you need to offset the humidity that you have at this time of the year. A humid loft is very bad for the birds and the droppings will never be right for long. The loft should have plenty of light and air. The stocking rate should be low because overcrowding can cause stress and stress causes wet droppings.

Minerals are very important to pigeons as has already been said. I mix my own and feed fresh every day. I do not like the ones that contain a lot of salt, aniseed or small seed because it creates an artificially stimulated appetite for it and that leads to wet droppings.

Again I agree with Leighton on the subject of artificial stimulants that are advertised everywhere. If these companies had to rely on me for a profit they would go bust. When I do need to give the birds something extra I put it onto the food.

The birds should look really good now and have nice droppings with that bit of down on them.

In regards to treatment, there should not be any need unless they have worms of course.

owen do you test b4 u pair up

when the birds have it for the 1st time to do go nuts for it...this is a sign that they are missing something in their diet, this black mineral is giving them that missing ingredient.

have you tried the red minerals too?

i found the best black mineral to be the natural(company)one....but i do use different types.

my birds get black and red in different pots .

Sorry to disagree Paul but you are wrong and misleading the members here. Any creature will go nuts for something it likes, just like a kid in a sweet shop they'll eat anything in sight, does that mean the kid needs a sherbert lemon or fizzy cola bottle?  NO!  The enthusiasm is nothing more than a sign that there is something in the new stuff that they like not necessarily need.

Like I said, I don't want to put your well intentioned post down but your wrong on this one mate.   :-/

HAVE NOTICED that after a day or they stop gorging themselves does this mean they sickened themselves or they just replaced what they need personally think its because they needed it watch your stock they go mad for it when first start feeding but just pick at it aftr that you can't compare pigeons to kids ;)

The likelyhood is they have had their fill nothing more sinister, yes birds are like kids, they'll eat rubbish if it's sweet but like kids they get sick of it after eating too much.  ;)

if you put some peanuts and some barley  in a cocks nest box which one will he take first?

they take the peanuts but are they lacking anything that the peanut gives no he just like the peanuts better than the barley.

cocks will fight you for peanuts if you train them to lol but will he fight you the same for barley no.

Every animal craves salt, even humans, and they all tend to eat too much of it. Have a look at the recommended daily intake for a human and compare that with your own daily intake ~ remembering that the food you eat is packed with salt, yet you add more to it.  :)

Salt is a mineral, and animals need minerals only in very very very small [trace] amounts.  Large amounts are harmful.

yes I test before I pair up. But I do not treat for cocci or canker unless they have a serious ammount in their system. I think that the birds need to go as long as possible without treatment for these diseases so that they can build up their immunity. External parasites and worms must never be tolerated. But I do not like treating for worms during the moult. A lot of wormers will ruin the growing feathers. If I have to treat birds in the moult I use Moxidectin.

I treat for cocci and canker when the birds are sitting.

The one thing I regard as vital, is the routine of using a viricidal disinfectant to keep the feeders and drinkers clean.

ok lads thanks 4 your opinions will take it all on board

owen use moxi ourselves always led to believe that the body does replace its natural immunity  but i do know from coaching that anti's comprimise   the whole body and any kind of athlete should not  be trained or compete whilst under medication maybe thats why losses are so high these days just a theory that comes from experience while coaching

all mine are like that ,except one young cock, his droppings have always been markedly loose in comparison.he is the picture of health (as they all are) . i would normally worry because there not as good as the others ,however my cousin had a cock whos droppings were like this and that bird had 9 x 1sts undet his belt. another freind had a bird called "squirt"  for obviuos reasons it won from all race points ,now in his stock loft breeding winners ??  andy.

bet his droppings are solid when paired though andy, my best stock hen has the same trait when seperated she gets the squirts when paired back to solid as a rock,

my birds droppings are like the dropping in the pictures , i use 25% each of barley, wheat, beans and layer pellets, they are better than when racing so much so i am thinking of flying on the mix in the season with maize added 30-40 percent from wednesday and a little rape/homoform/dari ,, works out about £7 a bag but its not for the price its just the general condition of the birds

i do think bad bugs in the gut is the reason for wet dropping how many have used strike after having bad dropping.

strke 2 i use every week for 1 day and after every race had no problems at all   ;)

How sad are we folks looking at pictures of droppings on a saturday night, must be going wrong somewhere ;D

Seriously though protein either in the form of layers pellets or beans do produce good droppings as in the pictures,we feed both and our birds droppings look the same

The only time our birds droppings are loose or abit green has been after they have endured some sort of stress ie after a show or something which is why we give pro biotics whenever the birds are under stress

The worst feed stuff I have found for bad droppings has been over doing the maize but I think if you feed alot of beans the droppings are always great
