pjc Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Many years ago I had a copy of a recipe where the crystals were disolved and then the mix was kept in a gallon container to be used diluted in the drinkers. I've never seen the recipe on here, does anybody know what the correct quantity is and dilution rates etc please?
paddymac Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 I think it was 1/2 t/spoon mixed to a litre and the from that mix 1/2 cupful to drinker and top up with with the water.
clayton moore Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 This is a bathing material and allowing them to drink it could end your season .
jimmy white Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 i would agree with the above dosage, this is a great [in my opinion] additive for the pigeon bath,, especially after "race day", this is a very mild disenfectant/cleaner, which will , apart from cleaning the birds, will aid in soothing any knocks, grazes etc they may have taken during liberation, or when racing home,,
paddymac Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 This is a bathing material and allowing them to drink it could end your season . There was an article in the BHW a few years back regarding the use of condys crystals being discussed with a couple of old vets and one of them stated it would be the first thing in his drinker when the birds returned from a race. That is were I got the mixture from and have used it every season since and it has certainly never done my birds any harm.

pjc Posted February 21, 2010 Author Report Posted February 21, 2010 Disinfectant and water treatment As an oxidant, potassium permanganate can act as a disinfectant. For example, dilute solutions are used to treat canker sores (ulcers), disinfectant for the hands and treatment for mild pompholyx, dermatitis,[4][5] and fungal infections of the hands or feet.[6] Potassium permanganate, obtainable at pool supply stores, is used in rural areas to remove iron and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) from well and waste water. Historically it was used to disinfect drinking water.

Guest stb- Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 It seems to although there is no reason as to why it works! My only thought is it could be an irritant to the parasites and they leave home! Yes its good in the bath for getting rid of lice
greenlands Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 how much are you adding to the bath water? A small pinch between your fingers into a bucket of warm water, being a crystal it takes a bit to disolve especially if you use cold water. The last jar I bought was very coarse, probably just a different supplier. Lindsay
