bewted Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 maize for putting weight on as fatty i would guess, but, peas can too if ybs not worked hard enough !!!!
pjc Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 As Ted says, maize will put fat on but protein in maples will add weight through muscle if birds excercised well. Phil

ALF Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 hi...dont no if this is a daft question or not but which of the 2 corns do you think would put the most weight on a young bird by feeding 1.oz a day...i dont mean just maples on there own i mean a young bird mix with mostly maples in.....same with the maze..2 different widowhood mixes mixed together...the reasen is im asking this ive just changed my systam cos were getting further now..and now ive changed it..only getting 1 oz a day..ive just handled them and there as fat as pigs..well peed of...shouldnt be not just on 1 .oz..i no.... :( :(so if you can answere which one you reckon would put the most weight on i will tell you if your right...i no cos ive just done it.... :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/thanks for reading mark.... Mark why change your system now mate? I feed a standard y/b mixture till the training of the y/b's starts and then they are put on a racing mix and it dont get changed till the last race
Guest IB Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 Wondered if you get a lot of maples left over? Mine don't seem to like them much, and according to Gordon Chalmers article published on here, too many cause problems for the birds:- http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1195378849/s-0/highlight-maple/#num0 On your question tho, maize is high in starch and sugar, unless they are burning it off in regular exercise, would expect them to gain weight on it.
Guest shadow Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 on i oz per day they should not put weight on if being trained 3 times per week and raced every week try mixing 25 % barley in the feed but a bit late in the season to change now doubt if you will see a lot of difference
Guest j.bamling Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 more peas ,beans , tares for putting weight on, any high protein mixture !!! maize adds flesh or body to a bird but i wouldn't say adds weight to a bird ( just my opinion )
mark Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 come on dont be shy.... ;D 1oz a day i always thought you wanted ybs for the future. so is 1oz a day food wise enough when racing on a sat with a stiff SE WIND in there face and you wonder why you have loads of loses.

mark proctor Posted September 2, 2008 Author Report Posted September 2, 2008 1oz a day i always thought you wanted ybs for the future. so is 1oz a day food wise enough when racing on a sat with a stiff SE WIND in there face and you wonder why you have loads of loses. losses..whats that mean mark....ive lost 1 hen in 5 races ive had.... :P and the answere is 1.oz of maze mix put the most weight on my young birds so the winner gets a lucky bag and a pat on the back.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D and who ever said about me changing my corn..the reasen wy is i ran out of the young bird mix....not worth buying any more just 2 races left....
Ronnie Posted September 3, 2008 Report Posted September 3, 2008 i allways beleived protein is used to build and repair any left over the body will dispose of. Carbs are used for energy any left over the body stores for when it does need it and they way it stores it is to turn it into fat. It's a lot more complex than that but thats the basic Jist of it. And seem's as Maples are high in protein and Maze is high in carbs it would make sense that the Maize will put more weight on if the energy is not getting burnt off.I would say with only an Ounze a day the birds are not being trained for more than an hour a day round the loft(sitting on the garden or house dont count ) or light road work say 20 miles or less. Will be interesting to see how much training they have been getting.
mark proctor Posted September 3, 2008 Author Report Posted September 3, 2008 ronnie..your spot on mate...been giveing them 12 miles a day mate....would of gone further but the price of deisel is stupid....all the best ..mark.. ;)
