Guest strapper Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 i really believe its certain area,s where there is always problems, and good area,s where its always good..its ok having a good service but some area,s it has been dreadful. the cardiff depot is disgracful, they have put the phone down on me and a number of other fanciers...the birm head office was told this and hit the roof. its certain employees that ruin the rep of the firm.
heather down Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 i phoned Amtrak in Rotherham last Wednesday morning to collect a bird from up North and it was picked up on Thursday and delivered to me at 1030 Friday morning, no problem with it at all.
joe61 Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 well people i said a while back that amtrak would pull out but hope they dont for your sakes but the moaners do like to moan but you cant please everyone you talk about starting your own stray chain i dont see the need to do that pigeon fanciers own the rpra get in touch with TOP GUN and tell him what you want if they dont deliver stop racing and dont pay any fees for a year or untill they come up with a carrier service thats the way to go get them to use your money to do what you want so you would have your own carrier service run by pigeon men for pigeon men what do you think oh happy days
pjc Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 big difference between Amtrak pulling out as you say and Going Bust which is whats happened!
joe61 Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 dont matter going bust pulling out could be no service come wednesday oh happy days
Roland Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 You see Phil and Co, say I had three vans, and I got Louella and the other studs contracts... 3 vans would be very quickly inadequate! They will want different area's covers on the same days... and quite some distances apart. How many 'Feather Merchants' are there? Just Louella's would suffice as the costs of sinlge trips here and there, and three four different places at same time dileveries... And you would loose money overall every trip! No it has to be done via US, / Or by a National courier, prehaps better still US with help / in conjunction with a National courier.
DOVEScot Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 i hae sent my details to llouella, and others. i am still waiting for replys. why should i rush to fill a void, i have other commitments other than birds. i was tryin i repeat trying to set up an alternative to amtrak. only a few have been in touch to offer support or give any ideas. some just want to gripe and moan about me for chargin £27. please try and transport anything from one end of the country to another for that price. i should just walk away from trying to help and let you sort this yourselves. i am a small company who needs to make a living like anyone else. i gave it from december last year until july this year to see if business picked up it didnt. i then stopped doing pigeon deliveries until i was contacted by a member of this forum who talked me into doing it again,. he gave me some details and i have had a few messages of phil. i have been trying since i got my licence to transport animals but everyone is set n there ways and uses a company who many of you dont want to use. the answer was simple give me a chance, but you didnt, you still went and gave your birds to amtrak. maybe it should be left to yourselves to sort out or may be you should contact companys like city link or dpd. they have a network in place already so should easily beable to accomadate your needs. If you are referring to me moaning then I am sorry but I just say it as I see it. Unless you are planning to go national then you will not fill the void left in the wake of Amtrak, you will fill small bits but the plain and simple truth is it needs a national courier or a franchise network to fill it totally MOANING; it wouldn't matter if you were doing it for free you will still get moaned at and no matter what you charge over that there are some that will gladly pay for a service well done but that's the public for you :-/
billy wilson Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 hope amtrak is okay for tomorrow ive got two birds to be picked up from kent ybs from the pheobe auction, from cottonheat
pjc Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 As has been said Rose, the drivers have been told to turn up tomorrow to see if it has been saved and they have jobs. Sure we will here any news in the morning.

Guest TAMMY_1 Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 http://www.birminghampost.net/birmingham-business/birmingham-business-news/2008/08/24/amtrak-enters-administration-putting-900-jobs-at-risk-65233-21597496/ just read it and that could make the pigeon sport in even more of a decline if they cease trading and nobody can pick up birds to cover the uk
DOVEScot Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 http://www.birminghampost.net/birmingham-business/birmingham-business-news/2008/08/24/amtrak-enters-administration-putting-900-jobs-at-risk-65233-21597496/ Just read it, one of our locally based national distributers and bus companies Moffat & Williamson have went bust as well due to the fuel costs and lack of customers :-/
Fair Play Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 That's ok Rose if you are within striking distance what if you are North of the Border and have birds reported down South by an non fancier and no means of collecting it. The RPRA will have to call an extraordinay meeting to recind the rule stating contact and collect within the stated time or fanciers will have to really show their mettle by helping each other out but birds could be on the move for days (hate to say weeks)
DOVEScot Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 There are always ways round things i havent used amtrak for years and i have always found anyone that has had my bird has either looked after it for me or knows someone coming down this way or i have managed to find someone going where it is at the worst just means i would have to go and get it myself Not always Rose, there is normally an easy solution to get birds back locally or put on a transporter or picked up by another fancier heading that way but getting a bird home is not always easy, if fact that hard that some fanciers don't even bother to ring you back when you report their bird :-/
Roland Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Well I am sad that it has turned out as it has... Not for Amtrax, -Yet the workers regardless what some think of them, but further for the great loss to our sport. Never mind all the crap scenarios, they were a boon to us, though not appreciated. Time now for some to put up and especially those that advocated that better could be had, to sort out where this BETTER is, and when it is available to be had! Amdeliveries may well be able to fill a big hole. Personally I'd charge the same as Amtrax if I was them, but in any case, EVERY location needs to be up and about getting things sorted for them selves to Help Am deliveries etc, and THEMSELVES. Yes I bang on and beat a drum... tell me now how we will be better off without them! Yes if some get off arses and do what they want, and BELIEVE others should be doing!
Roland Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 P.s, fanciers not bothering to answeer, or wanting birds back is now going to be increased and become a big burden, AN PAIN in the neck, and STILL will we have to help 'Joe Public' regardless of thoughts, deeds, hardships etc. AND I believe the RPRA will be more insistant on that aspect.
Roland Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Yes agree 100% Rose, pig ignorance I believe... But they do, will have got away with it, and will further get away with it even more now I'm afraid.
DOVEScot Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 But the majority who dont contact you are bad fanciers and they cant be bothered because they probably didnt want the bird in the first place even if you dont really want it back you still should have the decency to get hold of the person who has got your bird They may well be bad fanciers but there seems to be a lot of them about not willing to pay the £30 for the courier to return them. Why wing stamp if you don't want anyone to phone, and even why wing stamp someone elses bird if they know they don't want it back :-/ http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1218627905/

Guest chrisss Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 dont jump the gun chriss,,,,sometimes they dont answer,,,,most of the times they do though !! yse i know they are normally very good, but i have tried 3 times this morning and still no reply
pjc Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 I have e-mailed the RPRA and the woman responsible for fancier coordination and support at Amtrak without reply from either! Head in sand comes to mind!
Guest peter.j Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 yse i know they are normally very good, but i have tried 3 times this morning and still no reply they could well be in talks/meeting im sure there will be an anouncement soon........pete
Roland Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 Golly gosh, Tuesday is a long day, and ALL the workers / Meetings have to be sorted first surely! :B Be at least late tonight, more likely 2mora or Thursday before what is what is sort if they are too carry on, been taen over. Then a week or two before any light is shed, I would have thought, because the agenda has been set out and agreed to.
Roland Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 For instance, any money losing adventures will be debated as to whether to raise costs, able to raise costs, or just drop it. That won't be sorted today fear, may be wrong...
