Its been in the garden 3 days now.  I'm scared of birds!!!  It came and joined me on the patio this morning... I've fed and watered it, now it's gone clingy to me :o  I can't read the ring without touching it, but think I see 208 (or 6) :-/

What should I do?  Please help... I'm a wee bit scared of it ::)  Photo:

Get some body to catch it for you so you can read the number and report it to the RPRA

And typically, there is no-one about when needed!!!  So... abandoning my fear of birds, I'll have a go at handling it.  How do I approach it   Will it be scared?  Do I need 2 people... one to hold and the other to read the rings?  Do both rings hold identical information?

Many thanks for help.

Kaz, just pick it up it won't hurt you it will have a solid ring on (which you report) and a rubber ring (don't worry about that one)

forgot to add if you can open one wing at a time it may be stamped with the owners telephone number!

just be fairly slow in your movements Kaz if your two fast you will scare the bird. Don't be scared of it pigeons won't peck you like some birds do when you cath it approach it bend down and trap its wings with one hand then put your other hand under it and pick it up. your right hand thumb curls over its tail and the first two fingers along from your thumb and used to grip its legs between. Your left hand supports the pigeons breast. The bird will have two rings on one is a rubber race ring ignore that. The other is a metal ring covered in plastic which will have a series of numbers and letters on. The rigng is place upside down so it should be easy to tilt the bird up slightly and read the numbers off.

If you post the numbers on here I'm sure someone will help you trace the bird or put  the rpra's no up to report it.

Looks like its fairly tame anyway so should be easy to catch.

The catching event is about to take place... my son is coming to the rescue!!!  The bird is very tame... I know you are all used to this sort of thing, but for me it's an adventure into the unknown :o.  I was sitting on the grass making a phone call and it came right up to my leg... I mean we were touching!!!  What a breakthrough for me!!!

Thank you for the handling advice... it's going to be useful for sure.  I'm in Essex btw.  I'll post again once I have the ring number.  Is this a feral pigeon?

Thanks for the support..... here goes :o :o :o

Nah its a racing pigeon  def not a feral look at the condition its in plus its rung. Just got lost during a race no doubt.

It isn't a feral pigeon, the ring can be traced back to the owner and the race rubber on the other leg shows that it has probably been to a race recently, the blue ring if its a GB ring indicates it was a 2004 hatched bird, if its an NEHU ring its a 2005 hatched bird - if its from any other organisation I don't know, my sister lives in Buckhirst Hill, Essex,  but has no interest in pigeons ( just a bit of useless information really ) I'm 250 miles North................  :P

Anyone got a plan B???.  Appears that the brave son is a sissy!!!  He did the gentle method which ended up in 2 laps around the garden with the bird walking at a faster pace than him ::)

The son then had a bright idea... gain the bird's trust ::), so offered it food... which the bird quite happily took out of the son's hand.  Still no result though :B

That number on the metal ring... how long are they usually?  The son managed to read GBE8110, but thinks there is more.

If we don't catch the bird, will it end up finding its way home at some point?  Will it survive ok if stuck in my garden / lost?

Kaz,,,,if you have a garden shed see if you can coax it in there with some feed.

See if you can lock it in, then darken and then (in the dark) place a tea towel over it and you should be able to pick it up comfortably to check out the band number.

Like was said before the bird will not harm you (lol). It should stay calm when it is covered with the towel and hopefully you will not get alarmed if it struggles a bit.

Lot's of luck!!!!!!!!!

I almost choked when I read the 'shed' method.  It's an absolute tip in there :o  I've just been out in the garden to check up on the bird and it's GONE :'(  Awww... I was getting a soft spot for it.

Can I just say what fabulous help and support you've been.  I know zero about racing pigeons and came into a very unfamiliar forum and was helped within minutes.  Anyway, thank you all very much.  Last image - son hand feeding earlier today:
