barley straw can , at time's be infested with tick's. as it is hallow they hide inside the stem, if you are going to use straw , use wheat straw, the stem's are solid. also try putting a beer mat below the nest bowls, that has been dipped in creasoat, i also put one in the bowl below the nesting material, never had tick's or red mite prob's
