  1. I do not believe there is a cycle, I have put 10 day old eggs under a hen that just laid the second egg and when the 10 day old eggs hatch both cock and hen have pigeon milk. I would not send a bird producing milk to any long race. My 2cents worth anyway. Ed
  2. Put the danged cat in a berlap sack along with a brick and head for the nearest water. Guarenteed it won't be back and even if he has a chip he won't be back.. LOL. ;D Ed
  3. Jimmy do you truely believe that all theories are baloney, from the sounds of your posts I believe you are debunking them all. Right or Wrong? And I will also pose this queston for you. Are there or are there not still so called secrets to be learned by the masses. I believe there are no secrets left but do believe there are many things that have been forgotten and are now being used by only a hand full. Your thoughts??? Good day. Ed
  4. OK here is my 2 cents worth. There really isn't any such thing as pure strains anymore, if you look at a true pedigree there are many different birds in the backgrounds. Forget the danged pedigrees and pair up the birds to produce whatever type you like. Pigeons race, pedigrees don't. On a side note if your just putting birds together to become a pigeons peddler than I guess the paper matings would be better but if your racing forget it. Ed
  5. The first thing to do is take one of the sick birds to a vet and have him check the bird, he may end up killing it to an autopsy on it but at least you will no exactly what you need to treat for, this will be expensive but much less costly in the long run. I tend to believe you probably have a cocci problem and not paratyphoid but get it checked to be sure. There must be something that has changed in the loft this spring whether it be adding new birds or overcrowding, something must be different. Good luck. Ed
  6. Sammy your right on with the above statement. This is the way the chicken raisers sex their young birds with I believe over a 98% accuracy rate. Cock birds are always smilin and after the ybs are 2 weeks old you can't rely on this way. Ed
  7. If there is someone winning lots of prizes that is only 3 miles from you then your not off line. Better training (more miles) should cure your problem. Don't train your birds with anyone elses, it will just teach them to follow, you want them to lead. Good luck. Ed
  8. I also believe if you only get one theory it must be eyesign, as its the only one that can tell you about everything you need to know about the bird. Ed
  9. A pedigree is fine if used for a guideline, I like to have the paper just to see whatever has happened in the past and who has bred what, but I would much rather have the race results than the pedigree. I have a few well pedigreed birds but my best is some I bought from another fancier with no pedigrees, just verifiable race results. Ed
  10. Ignore any advice you don't care to listen to. The birds themselves will soon let you know if your doing right or wrong. Lots of the problems now seems to be coming from advice that has been given that may not have been in the best interest of those receiving it. Ed
  11. A good hound will cure the fox problem but then you may have a hound problem with the neighbors.. LOL. Ed
  12. Wiley you won't be disapointed. Enjoy it. Ed
  13. Maze and beans I would not be without.. Ed
  14. Wiley as I posted the book has 137 pages of great reading. Enjoy it my friend. Ed
  15. Agreed, I would get it as far off the ground as you can. Ed
  16. Put it in you garden and till it under. Makes your garden one of the best. Ed
  17. We have asked the same question here in the states and in all instances the answer has been NO. A few years back there were some generic e-bands that I believe worked with the benzeng clocks but the majority of them were failing or so I heard anyway. Ed
  18. The chip rings for my Unikon clock are $2.10 US Dollars. The bad part is there is only one distributor for the bands. Although they have very minimally dropped in price they are still expensive. As far as putting an electronic chip in a seamless band that could be a mistake because sometimes the chip fails and you have to replace it. The important part with the e-bands are to have your birds well trained before you put the bands on and then its not to bad as they don't get lost as easily. Good luck. Ed
  19. DeeJay........ You will have to have a certain kind of clock and the e-bands to go along with it. Non of them will interchange. It is best to find out from your club what you will need. The club clocks will only service there own kind. Best of luck DeeJay. Ed
  20. I would say the wire will hold them out. My worry would be if the wire is connected good to the hutch. If the fox starts digging at the wire it should hold but could be ripped from the hutch and that would be the end of the doos. Good luck. Ed
  21. Jack Barkel has a book out called "The Modern Guide to Eye-sign and Breeding". I have just finished reading it for the 2nd time and in my opinion it is one of the absolute best books on the subject that I have ever read. Many new lessons are taught in this one and I would highly recommend it to anyone that would have interest in reading it. It is 137 pages of great stuff for novice and old timer alike. I am now off to check out a couple more chapters again. Thanks. Ed P.S. Before anyone asks I am not receiving anything for posting this, I just think it is a fantastic book that everyone should read. Ed
  22. Not sure Frank but that maybe so. I am just trying to find out if the square or round is any indication of the better bird. I have not thought about it indicating distance or not but rest assured I will check and see how they have done as far as sprint and distance compared to feather type. Thanks Ed
  23. My first couple years were crap. I then swallowed my pride and asked one of the old flyers what I was doing wrong, he then informed me that I was doing everything wrong and then started giving me advice. Don't know how long I would have stayed with it without my mentor. He has been gone now for many years and I still miss his advice. When he first told me I was doing everything wrong I thought he was probably stretching things but I know now that he was right on. Ed ;D
  24. the two feet theory is actually a fact... The first two feet threw the trap is the best bird on the day. Thanks. Ed ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
  25. Actually it was inconclusive but the higher percentage of good were the squared feathers. I will continue the test as I now intend to only pair square feathered birds to square and round to round and will then test the young on not only performance but to see if the square only begets the square and the same with the round. Time will tell. Ed
