It only takes three or four days to get my bands. I usually order when I pair up.

Not joking! My wife has two cats who have never felt grass under thier feet. They are inside cats only. Most cities here in the States have laws against pets running loose including cats. Once the cat turns to killing birds it moves from pet to predator and is to be dealt with accordingly. The responsibility lies with the pet owner to contain his animal(s) and keep them from being a threat to the nieghborhood.

I raise rollers so my goal is a bit different. Our first big contest is in the spring. They usually get to my place in April for the quals and early May for the finals. I pair up on New Years Day,have hatchlings by early February and usually kick out the first round first week of March. I would like to be done before the heat of summer. Then I can concentrate on training. I use lights to heat the loft. The pairs don`t really get going good til the second round. I cut them off at 9:00 pm usually. If it is really cold I just leave them on. I would rather screw up their sense of timing for a week than lose a chick. The most difficult time is during the week the squeaks are pinning and the parents don`t sit really tight. Once they get thru that ,especially the ones raised in the first round, they are pretty hardy little guys. I read somewhere I think from one of you blokes that whole oats is a sort of aphrodesiac for pigeons. I read this about the same time last spring when I was having trouble getting my flyers to stop trying to breed. I then noticed the seed had a small amount of whole oats in it from the mill.I bought a new sack and had no more problems after a few days of not feeding the oats seed.Just a little word. Good Luck in the upcoming season. I am gonna run a poly this year and try something a little different. v99

Most of the performance genes come from the cock bird. He contributes more genetic material than the hen. I raise rollers and the cock is definitely more important than the hen to a certain degree. The depth and quality of roll are usually contributed by the cock bird. This is my opinion formed by reading and observing my birds. I reserve the right to change my mind. lol v99

Hey Rosie. Some of it is management and some is the family. Try switching a few birds right before you kick the out. Thats a temp solution. If they are really young they just need sky time. Kitting is an instinct with rollers. Breed the best kitters when you pick breeders. Always best to best. Another solution is to darken the kit box a little and keep them in a day or two. Be careful with the feed or you might crash a few. Box em up and take em down the road a few hundred yards.Try a variety of things and keep em on ehtier toes for a few weeks and they should get better.

Storm I have wire bottoms in the boxes so what ever light gets in is what they get. I do occasionally open the boxes and throw a handful of feed on the ground, get some free time. They get a day off of flying every ten to fourteen days. Lounge time in the aviary, bath and meds when needed. I have some pretty good ones coming in. v99

I have 2-2006 NBRC bands from the USA left over. If anyone wants them let me know. I`d swap something cool from the UK for them. Pack of smokes and a bottle of beer, coffee cup, Big Ben. Something a Yank pigeon fancier would like. redneckhippie15@yahoo.com v99 ps I have a pigeon chat room open. Usually chatting 8-10 CDT http://bluedot.bravehost.com/chatroom.html

They have a face only a mother could love. Maybe punishment at their school was a rap on the beak. They must be stupid as well as ugly. J/K They have a nice look about them. I thought rollers have some pearly looking eyes but those are unique to say the least. I think black is a strong genetic color. Tops at the high end of the color scale. Good Luck with them mate. v99 I`ll post a link to the pix of my yb`s. brb ok here it is,watch the slide show. It is easiest and best: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/redneckhippie15/album?.dir=/267ascd&.src=ph&.tok=phefvkFBsFjlDOtB] BTW after viewing the slide show how can any pigeon fancier not have at least one breed of flyer? Even if my kit didn`t roll;I would fly them just to see them with all of their beautiful colors

I ahve had a couple of chicks this season who were really slow in growing. One I culled the other day after realizing he would never even feather out. He was six weeks old and still too small to band. The other is a little older and not quite so slow but seems to have come to a standstill over the last few days. I felt of his crop and it was`nt full but not empty I know he gets fed.I watched em feed him last night. this morning I added anti biotic to the drinking water. I had an adult bird earlier this season seemed to go off a little and a round made them fit again. Any suggestions as to what it could be?

List I raise rollers for competetion. Since rollers came from tumblers I need to know the difference. Tumblers fly lower as stated, They also have more types of performances in their tumble. They can twizzle; which is a helicopter motion, roll, plate;a gyro motion, with the wings spread out.deep tail rides, roll wingtip to wingtip in a cartwheel motion, and tumble;which looks like a wet dishrag falling from a second story window. A good kit of tumblers would be exciting to watch I would think. The feed requirements would probably be similar to rollers. Rollers on the other hand turn over backwards with inestimable speed for considerable distances. At least thats what the standard says. There are several different breeds of tumblers while there is only one true roller. The Birmingham Roller originated right there in merry old England in the Black country.Rumor has it was in the late 1700`s. The iron workers would call each other out and the winner would get the others birds. They flew small 6-8 bird kits where we fly twenty these days and the standard has been changed to include kitting and quality of the roll in addition to depth. Simultaneous performance with moderate depth is the key to winning in competetion these days versus depth in the beginning. The Birmingham Roller was first brought over to the US in the late 1800`s via Canada and developed into the North American Roller which is a larger muscular bird known to fly higher and have deeper rolls. Oriental rollers are a lot like tipplers that roll. They will fly for hours at 700-800 feet performing 100 foot or better rolls. Problem is the are not very frequent and you have to have binaoculars to watch them. William Hyla Pensom brought over the Birmingham Roller in the 1930`s and the breed has remained pretty true to what Pensom brought over. He formed the first Birmingham Roller club here and really was the driving force in getting the BR started in the US. Now there are 2500 members in the NBRC. This is my account as I know it to be. It might not all be perfectly factual but it is close. V99

Howdy Coxy. I am from Amarillo Texas. Been in rollers going on three years now.I flew in the WC this year scored 507 in the quals and a big ol fat zero in the finals. I got lucky to make it and my kit really was nt up to the task, being all 10-12 months old. I will be back next year when my guys have matured a bit more. I run three breeders pairs and five fosters. I have a widespread family right now. I am narrwoing it down pretty quickly. Breed about 50 birds or so a year. I had some loaners that were pretty much straight Pensoms.I have a pair of Navarros now on indefinite loan. They are pretty tight family wise. Blend of three good families with no new blood for the last eight years. The chicks are really intelligent and seem to be pretty stable so far. Thats my season in a nutshell so far. v99 Storm, you need some help? I can probably hook you up.

Tatts, To quote William Pensom, "The roller pigeon turns over backward with inconcievable rapidity for considerable distances." Tumblers on the other hand twizzle, plate, tail ride, and spin. If you want rollers Wests are not even close. Check out Roller Pigeon.com. My site has a few pix too. I think I have a link to get back here. yits V99

Hi all, I am a roller fancier from across the pond in Texas. Been a member for a while just now speaking up. I dont know some computer glitch wouldn`t log me in. Anyway, I have been in rollers for a couple of years now. I placed second in my region and am flying in the World Cup finals next Sunday morning. Like a lot of new roller flyers I fly a hodge podge of birds right now. I have some good birds in the stock loft and should be in good shape after this season.I will have two keeper kits and one holdover I will trim down to 10 next spring.
