agree change of feeding could be the problem, i like to mix half and half of the new mix with the old mix first to break them in with it, ialso found the versa laga plus mix, does give a bit softer droppings, not watery but a bit soft,

as said before use masonary paint , regarding not painting if its new wood the fumes from some can make your birds ill, masonary paint dries quick and has no smell, also fills in any cracks,
