Hi all, I have been having a look on Ebay for blowtorches but there is so many and they are so varied that I have once again confused myself. I do not want one that requires massive gas cylinders kicking about for sure. I would like one that is self contained and easily portable but wont cost a fortune to refill. If you can recommend one please feel free. Thanks all

Hi all, OK, so I got in from work last night and checked on the birds. Almost all are perching again now although 2 or 3 still look dodgy. One was in the corner and he was sort of resting on his head with his bum in the air. Picked him up and he wasnt the one that I have been expecting to lose but this morning he was stone dead. So question 1, is the way he was sleeping indicative of anything new and question 2 is I really want to hammer the loft with Jeyes but as of yet I have been reluctant to let them out due to them drinking elsewhere and not getting the meds in the water. Is there anything I can use to disinfect whilst they are still in the loft that wont harm them? I have Milton's here or I can easily go and pick up anything else that is recommended to me. Thanks all

Another dead bird

Antibiotics have arrived (Sinulox drops) and birds are on the 2nd dayof treatment and seem to be responding so hopefully the end is in sight. To all who have offered constructive help during this time thank you so much. A particularly heartfelt thanks to Owen for your so kind offer. Will give another course of Harka-Verm after the Sinulox and then I will take you up on it if I may. Thanks again -

Hi all, Just a quick query please. Been into check birds tonight and 2 are huddled up in the corner together. To be sure they are getting the meds in the water I picked one up to take him to the drinker. Turned him upside down to check his number and lots of liquid came out his mouth. Its brown liquid and the vitamins the vet gave me are brown so maybe he has had a drink and thats it coming back but there seemed to be an awful lot of it compared to what they seem to drink usually. My question is: could this be another sympton of illness or am I likely to be right and he is just full of undigested liquid. Thanks all -

Hi all, The vet from Retford has just phoned. My birds are being killed by heavy infestation of worms. Still a few more tests to do but that is what I have so far. At least I know now and can start putting it right. Lost all my chicks and 2 more adults over the weekend but we live and learn and this mistake will never be made again. -
Hi all, I am going to scrape the loft tomorrow, floor, nestboxes the works. I am going to be wanting to disinfect it all too but being unable to let my remaining birds out I need to know what will be safe to use around the birds. With healthy birds I wouldn't be averse to using diluted Jeyes but in their weakened state I dont know if that is a good idea or not. Any ideas? Thanks all

I have just ordered a kit to have the droppings tested. It should be here tomorrow and sent back by Friday at the latest so by next week I should hopefully know what I am dealing with. -

It wasnt totally blind diagnosis. True he is not a vet but he has over 40 years experience with pigeons and has seen most ailments several times. He came to my house and handled the birds, checked the faeces, eyes and weight and rather than diagnosed what is wrong with them he has discounted what is not wrong with them and by a process of elimination he has come up with the 3 most likely candidates. I am well aware of the danger of treating blind but while the bird makes its way to its autopsy I cannot and will not stand by and do nothing. I am not throwing baytril down them, I am simply giving a preventative medicine which I will do several times through the year whether they have it or not. I do appreciate your comments though and I am grateful that you have taken the time to make them but I have to be fair to my friend as he is not on this forum to defend himself. All still friends I hope -

Hi, My friend who gave me most of my birds came over yesterday and had a look. He says its either cocci, canker or worms. I am now giving a 5 day treatment for cocci/canker in the water. I have had 4 eggs hatch last night, will this treatment affect the young ones? The birds are incredibly quiet, not cooing or anything. Some are sitting facing the wall and looking like they are taking deep breaths, others just seem a bit lethargic and some dont seem too bad, 2 have even made a nest and laid the first egg. Just letting you know whats happening, will keep you updated whether you care or not. Thanks for all the help and advice. -

Hi, The loft is rodent free. Yes I am feeding farm seeds. Winter/resting mix at moment and moving onto breeding/racing mix in a week or so. Is farm seed bad? -

Hi, All the other birds look fine to me but as a novice I wouldn't know any better if they looked ill. Droppings seem fine too but same thing applies. How much do PM's generally cost? -
Hi all, Got home from work this morning to find my 1 and only young bird from last year had died in the same circumstances as the other one, ie just keeled over. I find it hard to believe both have had a heart attack and I am sure something is killing them off one by one. I don't know where to go to get help as my vet has already told me she knows jack about pigeons. Sorry to bother you all with this but if anyone has any ideas please let me know Thanks

Hi, Due to the death of my bird yesterday her eggs are stone cold this morning. Her mate may sit them today and I will keep an eye on it but would he be willing / able to sit/rear them alone and if as I suspect the answer is no, what can I do? I have other eggs being sat on, could I add 1 egg to 2 of these nests? Thanks all
-
Thank you all, Re eggbound, she was sitting 2 eggs so as far as I am aware that is all they ever lay but I dont mind being corrected if there is a chance she could still be bound. I am not excessively worried but I wouldn't like to think that the others might be susceptible to anything she may have had but as I say no signs of any distress or damage on her so I will keep my eye on things and be back if any developments.

Hi all, Went out to the loft this morning and found a dead bird. No blood on it, no sign of any injury at all in fact. Looked as though she just keeled over by the food hopper. She was only a yearling, could the cold have killed her, some kind of fright etc. All the other birds in the same loft look fine including the week old chicks but so did she yesterday. Any ideas? Thanks all

Hi, Assuming the birds have never flown out from a loft you should have no major problems. It will take patience is all. You need to let the birds know where they live. I would wait until you have them all safely in your loft. Then I would keep them in for at least a week or 10 days without letting them out at all. After that I would basket them and place the baskets as high as possible outside, preferably on the loft roof (if safe) and let them get their surroundings clocked. Do that for a couple of hours a day for 3 or 4 days, putting them back in the loft by placing them through the trap so they know where that is. I would rattle the feed tin while putting them in too. After that it will be time to take the plunge and let them go, with your older birds if possible. If you have any really young birds you wouldn't need to do all this and you could have them flying out and homing before the older ones. This is how I have treated my older new birds. Lost 2 early on because I was keen and impatient but all the rest have come home. This is my experience and opinion only and I will stand corrected if others have a better way. (Probably use it too lol) Good luck anyway whichever way you choose. Wish you all the best for the season.

does cutting wing is harmful?
FoxesFan4Ever replied to mamun2a's topic in Introductions & Member Messages
Hi Mamun, I am no expert but I would say definitely do not use human medicine for your birds. At the very least, if you are not sure come here and tell those that will know more than us ALL of the symptons of your birds illness and someone will give you good advice on treatment. My own advice and all I feel able to give is that you must give clean, fresh and unpolluted water and good quality food every day and that will help more than anything to keep your birds healthy. The same rule applies to pigeons as it does to humans, dogs, cats etc...prevention is ALWAYS better than the cure. Good luck my friend!! -
Hi all, Thanks for the nice comments and the feedback. I don't usually have food on the floor but I took the pics at feeding time to give myself a better chance at catching the birds in the shots lol. Hope to be more proficient by the time the babies come
