sorry, should have said in my last reply. try a shelf in the loft infront of the trap, put some corn on the shelf to allow the birds to see it when they are on the landing board.
-
Hi Mate i would suggest keeping them in for a few days, when you do feed them make them eat out of your hand and keep whistling and calling them while they eat. if they dont eat out of your hand, they dont get food. this worked for me and now when i call they run over each other to get through the trap.

Try sending a PM to Dark Chequer, its Dick Darky's good lady.

i keep my birds at home in the garden with no other fanciers within 4 miles of me. may have something to do with why they have all stayed
-
Started with 32, lost 6 to YBS and trained the remaining 26 up to 30 miles, still 26 in the loft
-
NEHU 09 Z 4660, White hen came in with the trainers today.

Kirky Thanks for the two YBS, lovely birds and very well looked after! Mark, thanks again for bringing them up my way on your way past
-
ours were small to meduim blue bars, that through the occasional near white or blue sadleback. you do have me a bit worried with the eye colour as ours all had the moste beautiful pearl type eye, not wild as described earlier. i hope they were hansen's mind!!!! whatever they were, we enjoyed them for years

I had same problem with my ybs in March. bought two in and ended up losing my whole team. thanks to some top guys on here and another pigeon web site i have been gifted and bought in enough new ybs to have a go at my first season. it is soul destroying when there is not much you can do about it. the stud did replace on of the birds though and i kept the replacment far away from my other firds for 2 weeks. they are all looking healthy now and training very well. wish you all the best mate
-
Might be a stupid question, but how much are you feeding them? could it be that their little crops are to heavy for their legs?
-
Hi Amanda hope you are well, i bet Davey cant sit still! they were only given away because the old man packed up and all the YBS went to a friend of ours.

We imported some from the UK to South Africa in the early 90's and up until last year when my father packed up pigeon racing over there, they were the base of his loft and did very well in the heat. A youngster from that family gifted to a friend won the combine by 23 minutes in Cape Town last week on its very first race 300km approx 5000 birds, was bad weather but still very hot. We also crossed them to the Jansen strain with very good results in the middle distance so back to your question, not sure if you still get them over here but i know of approx 100 in South Africa if that helps

A good day all round. jumped the ybs from 10 miles to 20 and they all came home within half n hour, then sitting around the bbq last night and my missing grizzle cock hit the landing board. he has been out since the 8th May, dont think he has been in anyone's loft because he is very thin. he had never been out at mine, but looking at the state of him, he has probably tried to fly back to Germany and then thought better of it and has come home. Oh happy days, and the wife is over the moon, Adolf is home

you are right that they were bred to be fearless Gangster but the Boerboel also makes a magnificent family pet. www.claymoreboerboel.com is one of the breeders over here, have a read up on them, although they are fearless and excellent guard dogs, they are also excellent with people and not on the dangerous dogs register. most South African's grow up with them and swear by them
-
agree with you Owen, German Shepherd is a great choice, nothing fancy about these though, just good honest South African breed and great family pet, although they do eat some
-
There are a two breeders in the UK, i am on a waiting list for one, they are a bit pricy though, want to see some more, google "Boerboel" plenty of info about them
-
They were used to keep lions off the farms years ago. a whole chicken a day usually keeps them happy
-
I was reading a post earlier about someone that had their birds killed, and their was a photo of a dog in the thread which was good for protecting birds! Try this one it is an african mastif (boerboel) and keeps just about everything away from the loft. i had one in South Africa and even i was nervous going to the loft. No honestly probably the best Guard dog around and brilliant with its owner and family. God help anyone/thing that doesnt belong there though

Will do Mark when i left home the sun was out and a breez from NW. liberated in the same, but an hour and a half later it was storming. anyway, glad to get them all back though.
-
The first two back were bouncing around on the landing board, the batch of 10 that arrived after an hour and a half were soaked, as the rain started falling hard about 5 minutes before they arrived and the rest looked very tired as they arrived, but as i said they look happy enough again this morning
-
Took the ybs for their first toss on Tuesday, 10 miles in 19 minutes, was very pleased with them so packed them all in the basket again yesterday and took them to the same place. not sure what happend but got 2 back after 21 minutes and then nothing more for an hour and a half (10 together) The rest dropped in all day with the last arriving home just before dark last night. after about 45 minutes of waiting and only 2 birds back in the loft, i felt physically sick when i started thinking i had lost them all. anyway, all back and not looking too sorry for themselves today. How long would you leave it before taking them out again
