Well done George, top bloke -
Received an email from Ron Fewings from Ireland who wrote; ‘Hi Joe, I hope you and Margaret are keeping well? Do you remember me sending you a reply in February this year. Following on after you catch up below. ‘Hi Joe, Yes you can use any of my email in your column.’ Ron then went on to say; ‘I got 2 from your bird in 2020 they were a bit late so never raced them but 2 of them were double rung for future stock. Now last year 2021- I paired your bird to close relation to 2 nd Pattaya One Loft Race; and I got 4 beautiful chequers 3 cocks and 1 hen. Our young bird racing was terrible last year and from our first race a 1/3 of federation was lost; nobody knows what actually happened but your 4 birds came through. With the hen my first bird from 50 birds sent on several occasions. As you know Joe these birds are not sprint birds but long-distance bloodlines; so, I can’t get my head round how they are beating my sprinters to be honest. Another week both nest mates came from your bird so I couldn’t wait to race all 4 this year to be honest and I set them up for the Irish National Flying Club Yearling race. Chat soon Moving on to this Year 2023; Now the 3 cocks and hen from your bird above. The cocks are flying steady but the little hen whom I have now named ‘Joe’s Joy’ has really exceeded expectations. Having our INFC Yearling national last Wednesday 14 th June; I sent a solid team but if given a choice only to send ‘ONE BIRD’ it would have been ‘Joe’s Joy’ as the money I put on her would suggest. The INFC Yearling national attracted 485 members sending 3070 birds; The North section had 319 members sending 2200 birds; the South section had 166 members sending 807 pigeons; (These are the best yearling in every man’s loft Joe). With total pools and prizemoney being £24.083.97p. The convoy was liberated on Wednesday 14 th June at 07-30 into a light easterly wind, and the winner of 1 st north section 1 st open is Martin Graham of Ballymena with his winner doing a velocity of 1398. 1 st & 2 nd south section 1 st & 2 nd open are the Trim RPC partnership of Zeballos & Thorpe recording velocities of 1384 point 6 and point 3 with their 2 birds. Ron’s club mates J Fitzgerald & granddaughter won 5 th south section 7 th open doing a velocity of 1279; Ron won 8 th south section 18 th open doing a velocity of 1189 for the 199 miles. He wrote, ‘I was so happy how ‘Joe’s Joy’ was racing on the land I decided to pool and nominate her across the board; I have never done this before but felt she deserved a ‘punt’ as her eggs were chipping out the morning of basketing this worked a treat. The birds were liberated at 07-45 into an east wind. After flying 4 hours 54 minutes ‘Joe’s Joy’ trapped like a dream to win 3 rd in the marking station and 8 th south section 18 th open doing a velocity 1189. But the icing on the cake Joe was she won £1430 the most money won by an individual pigeon from the 3070 birds. To say I am delighted is an understatement; hence the reason why she is named after you. I thought I would let you know this recent success as you asked me to let you know how the birds got on when I got them from you. Thanks again Joe for giving me the opportunity to purchase her father this pair to me are the GOLDEN PAIR. I have attached a photo of ‘Joe’s Joy’ on the nest after arriving home to her baby. Thank You once again Joe, yours Ron’. Ron sent me a photocopy of the pedigree of the cock I sent him; The bird was a son of ‘Saul’ my stock Bernard DeWeerdt’s cock who was bred from a son of ‘Triple’ who won 3 times from International races; when he was mated to ‘Inita’ a winner 5 times from Barcelona for Bernard. ‘Saul’ was mated to my No 1 stock hen ‘Veronica’ a double granddaughter of ‘Emiel’ Bernard’s International winner. The dam of the cock sent to Ron was ‘Joanna’ her sire was a son of ‘Clovis’ one of Bernard DeWeerdt’s top Barcelona pigeons between the years 2011-12 & 2013. Dam of ‘Joanna’ was the above ‘Veronica’ my number one stock hen. So, you will see the cock was bred in the ‘purple’ from the best of Bernard DeWeerdt’s distance bloodlines. I’m over the moon for Ron and it is good when fanciers do well with pigeons you have given them; and on a personal note, it is 2 nice to have feedback which doesn’t always happen. See the photograph of ‘Joe’s Joy’ which is sent with this article. East of Scotland Federation News from Tom McEwan with the Ramsgate result; Tom says; ‘This turned out to be quite a testing encounter for the federations last old bird race of the season. The convoy were liberated at 7-00am on 17 th June into a light variable wind. Topping the federation for the 2 nd week in succession are the father and son partnership of Tom & Scott McEwan of Elphinstone; Completing a nice treble is secretary John Bird who wins 2 nd 5 th & 7 th positions. Graham Wardhaugh of Dirleton has a good double winning 3 rd & 4 th federation. Brian Lavery from the ‘Pan’s’ is 6 th federation with Gus Jackson of Mackmerry winning 8 th federation place. Prestonpans HS The winners are Tom & Scott McEwen with a 2-year-old chequer hen; whose sire is bred down from their SNFC Tours SNFC winner ‘Petit Rose’ when crossed with the ‘Bib’ a 4 times SNFC prize 4 winning cock. Dam of the winner contains the DeWeerdt bloodlines via Mark Gilbert. 2 nd & 3 rd places go to club secretary John Bird with his 1 st bird a yearling blue hen; her sire is a Vandenabeele blood while her dam was bred from Freddie Jamieson of East Calder. John’s next pigeon is a 4-year- old chequer pied cock, he is a pure Padfield House of Arden ‘Invincible Spirt’. Wishing you and Margaret all the best Joe, and THANK YOU once again for the publicity in your weekly column. Dundee News from Brian Donnelly who writes, ‘Hi Joe, for our 9 th race of the season, we are at Ramsgate, around 400 miles to most club members. Seven members sent 58 birds; these were liberated at 07-00 am into a light north east wind. Winning 1 st club this week is Graeme MacKenzie on a velocity of 1482 ypm. Graeme timed a 4-year-old grizzle cock, that won 2 nd club last week and goes one better this week to claim 1 st club & 1 st federation. The winner’s hen laid her 2 nd eggs Thursday a day before race marking, he was bred by Charlie Watson from a pair of birds bred by the late John Duthie. 2 nd club is Darren Phinn with a 2-year-old blue cock on 1291 ypm. Third club is Danny Henderson on 1191 ypm with a 2-year-old. Our congratulations go to Graeme, Darren and Danny. I have attached a photo of Graeme with his winner; kindest regards Brian’. Winchburgh & District P C News from Bernie, with the result of the Thirsk race flown on the 10 th June; were 8 members sent 180 birds, these were liberated at 09-30am into a North East Wind. Taking 1 st club & 13 th federation is Peter Keogh with a chequer white flight cock; who was flown celibate. He won 2 nd open SNRPC yearling national which was flown in conjunction with the Littlehampton; where he took 9 th open. In 2 nd club 14 th federation is Henry Borthwick, with his good blue bar cock flown on widowhood. He is home bred and won 2 nd club from Hexham earlier this year and he also topped the federation from Thirsk & Newark last year. In 3 rd club 16 th federation position is Charlie Job; with a blue chequer cock a Hermans Ceuster, bred by Ritchie Elliot. As a matter of interest Joe this is his first race of the season. 4 th club are Tom & Georgina Weir with a Herman Ceuster; he was on the SNFC Upper Hayford result last year and he also won as a young bird so he is a steady pigeon. Thanks once again Joe for adding us into your weekly column. Both you and Margaret are good friends. Bernie.’ SNFC From the SNFC Brighton race the convoy of 1629 birds were liberated at 05-30am into a north east wind, with the convoy splitting into 2 batches heading north west, clearing the site immediately. Birdage in the sections are as follows; Section A- 309; Section B-383, Section C-276; Section D- 249; Section E-231; Section F-78, Section G -103. This turned out to be an excellent race with the probable winner an exceptional PIGEON who must have headed in a straight line north to its loft in Broxburn a distance of 379 miles; and was timed at 12-42 to record a velocity of 1546 to win 1 st region D 1 st east section 1 st open to the loft of Gordon MacKenzie, winning the race with a lead of 72 ypm. I’m led to believe that this pigeon contains the Gabby Vandenabeele bloodlines from Mark Evans. So well done Gordon you have a truly outstanding pigeon as he was timed at 12-42 flying 50 miles further (379 miles) than the 1 st region A 1 st south section to McMorrine Brothers of Carlisle who timed at 11-45 for the 314 miles and recorded a velocity of 1474. Winning 1 st section B 4 th open are the partnership of Black & Robertson of Edinburgh who had a great race as they also won 2 nd 4 th 11 th & 16 th region B and 8 th 15 th 39 th & 60 th open. Over in Arbroath my dear friends Charlie & Glen Cameron win 1 st & 2 nd region C plus 12 th & 13 th open. They also won 13 th 14 th 15 th 18 th & 21 st region C; 82 nd 83 rd 84 th 104 th & 119 th open, great flying well done lads. Another dear friend of mine Derrick Hay of Kirkintilloch is another fancier who had a great race winning 1 st 3 rd 9 th 11 th 12 th & 19 th region E 21 st 51 st 92 nd 97 th 98 th & 135 th open, great flying well done mate. A Wilson of MacDuff in the north of Scotland flying a distance of 483 miles wins 1 st region G 32 nd open which is truly outstanding when 5 you think that he only sent 3 birds to the race, so well done. Winner of 1 st region F 107 th open is J Moffat of Millerston who recorded a velocity of 1251 for the 388 miles; he only sent 3 birds and had them all on the result. another outstanding performance; well done!!!! I also noticed that my dear old friend Barry Kinnear of Edinburgh had a good race winning 7 th 13 th 15 th 19 th & 37 th region B 27 th 48 th 56 th 64 th & 144 th open. Another SNFC Gold Cup winner George Veitch of Edinburgh is having an excellent season as he was well to the fore in the first national and George wins 10 th 12 th 22 nd 29 th & 39 th region B 36 th 41 st 78 th 120 th & 148 th open in this race. While over in Fife Dean Bridges of Glenrothes is another fancier who had a brilliant race as he wins 8 th 9 th 10 th 19 th 20 th 23 rd 24 th & 26 th region C 43 rd 58 th 66 th 112 th 118 th 139 th 142 nd & 147 th open. As excellent as a race this was, I was quite surprised to see some very prominent lofts who didn’t make the result. I know that you can’t always be on every result. I study the SNFC results and have reported on some of the best fanciers and lofts in the country in my column, so not to see these established names is quite surprising; especially as it was such a good race. Once again, my congratulations to the convoyer; race controller for having the birds away early in the morning (don’t know the last time we had a 5-30 liberation) and to the new club secretary Donna Thomson who had the provisional result out by Monday night; which was indeed marvellous; well done to ONE AND ALL. The Joe Murphy Column 1 Received an email from Karl Murphy who wrote, ‘Hi Joe, Is there any chance you could email me the pedigree for SU 20 939 the red hen as I have deleted previous email with her details on it; as she has bred me nice birds with 3 of them clocked this week. Here are a few results I have had with your birds; 2 nd club 3 rd section 835 birds 178 mile; A granddaughter of ‘Gerald’ won 5 th club 16 th section 147 th open Talbenny young bird national with an entry of 3191 birds flying 208 miles. Another granddaughter of ‘Gerald’ won 5 th club 19 th section flying 178 miles with an entry of 432 birds. Another granddaughter of ‘Gerald’ won 2 nd section Talbenny Gold Ring Race. As a matter of interest ‘Gerald’ was bred by my good friend Gerald MacPherson hence his name ‘Gerald’. He was a direct son of the famous John Ellis of Dundee’s Champion pigeon ‘Blue Boy’ a 7 times winner from France; while Gerald’s dam was a ½ sister to ‘Wingdown’ a winner of 2 nd 4 th & 7 th NFC flying 676 miles, ‘Wingdown’ was the only pigeon in the history of the NFC to win 3 top 10 prizes in national races. So, you will see that ‘Gerald’ was bred for the job. A son of your red hen 939, won 9 th & 10 th club; 29 th & 37 th section Penzance flying 314 miles. I looked out the pedigree of the red hen 939 Sire and Dam for Karl, which I forwarded with an email. This pedigree made interesting reading and I thought I would let readers of my column see the quality of 939 breeding. Her sire was 814 a son of my No 1 stock cock a direct son of ‘Robbie’s Boy’ a winner of 1 st open SNFC Falaise for Gilmour Brothers of Leven; when he was paired to a sister of ‘Mary’ bred by Pete Patrick. ‘Mary’ was Jock King’s 10 times national winning hen. My No 1 stock cock was paired to my No 1 stock hen Martha (she bred a 18 th open Ypres; 4 th & 19 th open Clermont; 86 th & 134 th open Alencon 573 miles. Martha was a direct daughter of Ritchie & Whyte of Fraserburgh wonderful hen ‘Last Chance’ a winner of 12 th north section Tours & 1 st north section 42 nd open SNFC Tours flying a distance of 721 miles, and she left a fantastic line of long-distance pigeons not only for me but for other fanciers as well. Sire of Martha was ‘High Hopes’ he flew the English Channel 6 times racing into Fraserburgh. The dam of 939 is from a Mark Gilbert cock when mated to a hen from Tom & Scott McEwan of Elphinstone from their famous cock ‘TMAC’ who won a SNFC Silver Award his national positions were as follows; 21 st region B 85 th open Clermont 506 miles; 3 rd region B 5 th open Alencon Gold Cup 533 miles (Kevin won 4 th open SNFC in this race with My Little Rachel) 17 th region B 82 nd open Clermont to win his Silver Award and he went on to win 13 th region B 47 th open Alencon. The dam of 939 is from 1582 who is bred from the best of Mark Gilbert x Tom McEwen x Mark Gilbert. I also explained to Karl that I already had a lad from Ireland phone and tell me that he had won from this weekend’s race from St Malo with birds from me. This was Tommy Tweed of Rasharkin & District RPC in Ireland who informed me that the partnership of Anne, Tommy and their son Christopher timed in their dark chequer white flight hen (see photo) now known as ‘Tommy’s Dream’ from the NIPA St Mallo race; she was flying a distance of 488 miles. This hen now wins her Silver Award as she has previously won 5 th section B 43 rd open in 2021 and the following year 2022 she won 7 th section B 71 st open to gain a Bronze Award. This year she has won 3 rd section B 30 th open from an entry of 1309 birds entered by 353 members. Tommy informed me that she has now won over £900 in 3 years for the partnership. The pigeon is bred down from birds Tommy purchased from me and the dam of ‘Tommy’s Dream’ was a mealy hen; her sire was ‘JS’ bred by Jock & Willie Strang of California in the North West federation. ‘JS’ won 1 st club (only bird on the day) 26 th east section 127 th open Eastbourne flying 419 miles 4568 birds. He also won 11 th section 66 th open SNFC Ypres 454 miles 2347 birds; 15 th section 36 th open SNFC Clermont 539 miles 1741 birds; ALL AS A YEALING. He then won 23 rd section 213 th open Cheltenham 3780 birds flying a distance of 321 miles; and also won 107 th Clermont 539 The Joe Murphy Column 2 miles 1622 birds; Unfortunately, he was lost at Ypres going for his Silver Award. As a matter of interest, you will see that Tommy is wearing a Glasgow Rangers football top; believe it or not Jock Strang played for Glasgow Rangers away back in the 1960’s plus both he and his wife Betty married on the same DATE, (but a different year) from Margaret and I; and we have ALL been friends for many years. The dam of the mealy hen was a chequer pied hen; who won 2 nd club Hexham as a young bird and had 5 races to Wakefield. She had 8 races as a yearling and won 6 th club Eastbourne. She was then stopped as she was paired to ‘JS’ as Kevin wished her to be at home for him returning from a race. She was off the road for 2 years and then put back into the racing team in 2014 and she flew Clermont. The sire of 326 was bred from a Jim Cullen of Uddingston cock; his sire won 60 th section 185 th open Eastbourne & 16 th section 138 th open Ypres. He also turned out to be a top stock cock for Jim. Dam of 326 was a Willie & Barry Kinnear hen; she was a ½ sister to their famous ‘Auld Reekie’ the winner of 1 st 2 nd 11 th & 24 th open SNFC races. He was the BEST COCK in Scotland over a 2-year period in fact he was a DOUBLE DEWAR TROPHY WINNER – which is awarded to Scotland’s Bird of the Year. As a matter of significance, Auld Reekie was also a double grandson of the Kinnear’s partnerships ‘Back to Basic’s’ their Runner Up for the Dewar Trophy in 1995. Sorry I digress; so back to Christopher email; who also informed me that a blue white flight hen from ME bred them a Bronze Award winner; which is awarded to a pigeon for winning TWICE from St Malo for the partnership. Her positions are as follows: in 2019; she won 4 th section B 25 th open, and in 2020 she won 17 th section B 162 nd open; unfortunately, she was lost going for the Silver Award in 2021. She was bred down from my George & Brian Hunter ‘Kingdom Spirit’ lines; many fanciers will know that ‘Kingdom Spirit’ was also a Double Gold Award winner from France into Scotland (10 times from France). She also won the Dewar Trophy for Scotland’s Bird of the Year Award TWICE and was Runner Up once. I have forwarded the above information to Christopher to read prior to it going into my column and he replied. ‘Thank you for your kind words, Joe, Dad is on ‘Cloud 9’. After nearly 60+ years of racing pigeons this is now one of dad’s grandest achievements; plus, it has brought us so much happiness not only as a partnership, but also as a family’. (Wonderful words and I’m happy to be part of the family’s happiness Joe M). As a matter of interest, the St Mallo old bird national had 353 members sending 1309 birds, these were liberated at 06-30am into a light north wind, the outright winner of 1 st section A 1 st open was to S McFlynn of Castledawson; our congratulations go to him as well. Results Arbroath Racing Pigeon Club News from Charlie Cameron on the 10 th old bird race of the season from Wooler flown on 24 th June with5 members sending 58 birds. These were liberated into a light south west wind. Charlie and son Glen take the first 3 place with P Cameron winning 4 th & 11 th spots. Central Scotland 3 Bird Club Received an email from Greig Drysdale regarding the above club; he wrote; ‘Morning Joe, Hope you are well, the Central Scotland 3 bird club had 32 members sending 85 birds to their 2 nd race of the year from Brighton on 17 th June with the birds convoyed with the SNFC who we thank. Winning 1 st central section 1 st open is Martyn Brown and his dad Alan who take the top spot. Here's what Martyn had to say on his winner SU 20 CA 930; now named ‘MAXIMUS’ continuing on Leach Brothers Naming Trend. He is flown on the roundabout system, along with plenty training on board Freddy Robertsons wagon with the Pentland members from Carter Bar which is 63 miles to Bo’ness. He had 3 of the 5 club races before Upper Heyford where he scored 27 th section D 241 st open & 7 th open Scottish Central 3 Bird club. He was left to go down on eggs after that due to dwindling numbers and was given very little work in between the 2 nationals. He was sent sitting 5-day eggs. The Brighton Race flown in conjunction with the SNFC he Scored 1st club 3rd fed 3rd section D 26th open SNFC. His sire GANACUS was purchased from the leach Brothers Partnership in their 2018 stock reduction sale. He is a direct son of Leach Brothers Legendary ‘Syndicate Cock’. ‘Ganacus’ has bred winners right from the word go for ourselves. His Dam is ‘Iron Maiden’ was sent on loan to pair to ‘Ganacus’ and then was kindly gifted to us by Adrian Leach. ‘Iron Maiden’ herself was a winner on the road and among other results scored in a very hard race from ‘Ancenis’ a distance of 420 miles with the MNFC. Myself & my dad would like to congratulate all who timed in the 3 Bird Club. We would also like to congratulate Greig Drysdale on getting the 3 B C back up and running. The club is very much on the way back up again and it couldn’t be done without his hard work and commitment. See picture attached for Alan and their winner. Winning 2 nd The Joe Murphy Column 4 section 3 rd open saw Peter Keogh with the 3 rd section 4 th open place won by the Brown partnership. 1 st West Lothian section 2 nd open saw the partnership of Colligan & Hope with the help of Peter Curran working in the background; the partnership also took 2 nd section 9 th open. Here are what they said about their winner. ‘The cock has various positions; he was 2 nd section Billericay last year in 3 bird club. He was also my timer in Upper Heyford race this year and now wins 5th section 37th national Brighton. 3 rd section saw the consistent dedicated loft of John Hadfield. 1 st North West Section 12 th open was the loft of David McBeath once again winning the section; this was the only bird timed in the section. David is a man of few words but here's what he said about his section winner. ‘It was the same doo as last race lol’ so 2 in a row’. 1 st west section 7 th open is the loft of McArdle and Thomson doing well in their 1 st year of the 3 Bird Club. Glenn said the following; ‘The chequer cock was bred for me by Ian Thomson of Forth from 2 of his best birds. The sire won 16 th section 74 th open SNFC Burdinne Gold Cup in 2019 flying 510 miles. Dam won 2 nd section 22 nd open SNFC Falaise in 2017 flying 502 miles; so was bred for the job. He flew Upper Heyford this year just missing the result then in to Brighton and my plan is he’s going to the last national if sitting correct. 2 nd section 8 th open was Harry McNeil with Vic Couper wining 3 rd section. We are grateful to Bonnyside Engineering who sponsored the race. Our next race from Guernsey is convoyed with Lanarkshire federation; Race marking will be at Armadale club hut on Tuesday 4 th of July with an earlier time of 16:45 till 18:45pm. Lanarkshire federation members can duplicate their birds into the 3 BIRD CLUB for this race. Any members looking to join the 3-bird club can still do so at a cost of £40; Yours in sport Greig Drysdale; on behalf of the Central Scotland 3 Bird Club. Kingdom Racing Pigeon Association News from Pete Penman who writes; ‘Hi Joe, the KRPA had 121 birds competing in our open race from Ramsgate which is a distance of 380 plus miles. Leading the way again is Coaltown's Gary Hall, who is having a fantastic season with a yearling chequer hen sitting 7-day eggs. Her sire is a DeWeerdt and her dam was a gift bird from Peter Cuthbert of Dunfermline. Taking 2 nd 3 rd & 4 th is another inform loft of Davey Whyte from St, Serfs club. His first bird is a home bred yearling red cock sitting 10-day eggs, he is bred out of his national winners. He was closely followed by a 3-year-old homebred blue hen sitting 8-day eggs. His next bird is one of his most consistent racers this year a yearling chequer pied cock. This bird won 1 st section C from the SNRPC Young Bird Newark race last year. In 2 nd place in the Coaltown club is Chic Dinsdale with a 2-year-old bred direct from his good blue pied hen. She has scored numerous times from the channel crossed with a grizzle cock, another of his consistent channel birds. In 3 rd place saw Pete Penman with a 3-year-old red hen flying spare; sire was bred by Penman & Grubb. Rosyth Club saw Lou Mitchell take 1 st & 3 rd with Gordon Cree in 2 nd place. Tom Berwick just edged out Eric & Elizabeth Young to win Leuchars club. Joe; the following Saturday we had a comeback toss from Berwick; some clubs for a bit of fun made it a race. At Leuchars Alan Keanie took the red card with a M & D Evans Vandenabeele while at the Coaltown we saw Gary Hall take the first 3 places with 3 driving cocks; thanks once again for adding us into your weekly column, regards Pete’.
