  13. At Bloemstraat, Achthuizen, Holland, stands a small structure which contains one of the greatest families of long and marathon distance racing pigeons of the modern era. At this time, March 2005, the season of Spring has yet to fully enwrap its arms around the continent of Europe although there are signs of a subtle appearance in the landscape. But here in the land of my birth I use my imagination based upon research to travel and see rows of perches containing blooms of outstanding racing pigeons for never perhaps in the history of the sport has such a small colony of pigeons gained such a deserving international reputation. The Hagens are relatively young in age as are their loft of pigeons and assuming that they live for a quite a number of years yet the potential and the future successes of this loft are predicted to be in the realms of the phenomenal. For as a team the brothers have blended the very best of endurance bloodlines and are confirming by their results so far their reputation as being masters at their chosen art. Not just as racers but as breeders. The base is their reputable super couple from the De Weerdt Brothers, the NL89-111 & NL89- 274, which has produced scores of champion racers coupled with the famous Theelen cock 'The Rhooie Kweker' which is the 'red godfather' of the Hagens family. (Jan Theelen being a past winner of the Barcelona International). The so called red godfather being the grand sire of 'Sarina' 3rd International Barcelona; 'Lucinda' 23rd International Barcelona; 'Rivaldo' 2nd and 7th National Bordeaux; 'Bauer 014' 1st International Tarbes. Sarina being internationally acclaimed as being one of the best distance pigeons of her era. Her sire being the great 'Carcasonne' a wonderful breeder and racer scoring 13th, 49th, 52nd and 89th in Nationals. Another great hen was 'Sonja' who became the Hagens first International winner from Perpignan after scoring from St. Vincent and San Sebastian. May I add that a son and a daughter of Sarina was sold recently for the sum of 22,500 pounds sterling. The joining of the bloodlines of 'Carcasonne' and the 'Rhooie Kweker' would appear to be the basis for the Hagens reputation world-wide. Of course if a family is producing so many winners and it is reported that about 5 National Winners for other fanciers aside from the Brothers successes then the sport is bound to sit up and take notice. This is all an exciting development for we in a modern age are witnessing more so than say the sport of Hansennes day the evolution of a strain and the ultra distance pigeons of tomorrow. Of course the Hagens are not the sole pioneers of the sport in the new millennium but they are an important part in the growth of a new breed of pigeon destined to conquer the extreme distances. Their progeny has been spreading gradually throughout the world's pigeon fraternity and hopefully through inspired management will add to the potential and progress of the sport. I await with interest (God willing)!

  18. Carrick and District Pigeon Racing Club members will working together with Community Safety to deliver a project called "Doo The Right Thing" they will be giving up a lot of their free time to assist the young people in this project. The project involves young people in the care and development of a team of racing pigeons gifted to them by members of a local pigeon club. There are a number of young people in the Maybole area who are regularly involved in antisocial behaviour, mainly related to under age or binge drinking. This project encourages these young people to become junior members of an established pigeon racing club in Maybole. This will help give young people confidence and enable them to develop meaningful links with older members of the community in Maybole and share a common goal. Each young person involved in the project will take responsibility for rearing, training and eventually racing young pigeons given to them by members of the club. Pigeon Club members will work with members of the Community Safety Team and will help the young people and provide support and information to them. The young people will take responsibility for feeding, cleaning and assisting in training, and all aspects of maintaining a healthy pigeon loft. The young people involved in the project will be given free membership of the local pigeon club, and will be supported to participate in racing with the Ayrshire North Road Federation for the duration of the young bird season. Diplomas will be presented to those involved at the end of the year. One of the most important aspects of this programme will be in encouraging responsibility among the young people involved to take ownership of the care and maintenance of the pigeon loft, and to ensure that this interest is sustained through membership of the local club. Regular session with the young people will be arranged on Friday evenings which is the key “drinking time†for them in Maybole. Failure to take part in these sessions will mean they will be unable to take proper care of their bird and will not be able to compete in subsequent races. This initiative will allow the development of a programme, not related specifically to sport, which can be enjoyed by a mixed group of girls and boys, and will enable the Community Safety Team to engage with targeted young people in a different format, while providing a wider choice of diversionary activity for young people. We will also be involved in delivering a “Doo the Right Thing†class project in Cairn Primary School. The schoolchildren will have workbooks to fill in and they will also be allocated a pigeon at the beginning of the season and they will receive regular updates/pictures etc... Informing them of the progress of their pigeon. Prizes and certificates will be handed out at the end of the season.
