  1. The Flying Vets Pigeon Health Management by Collin Walker Page 39- respiratory "In a well managed loft where drugs have been used correctly, this immunity should be realativly solid by the start of the season." page 40 " If respiratory infection durring racing has been a problem in earlier years, preventitive courses of antibiotics can be given before racing...to decrease the level of Chalamydia in the birds system so that they are less likely to break down with the stress of racing ahead. ...common recommendation is 3 days treatment every third week..." Page 91- canker "...if it has been more than 3 weeks since any preventitive medication has been given, then 99% of these teams will have wet canker..." Page 139-140 Management of Pigeons Health by Successful Fliers During Race Season page 141-Veterinary comments "The concern regarding the control of wet canker and respiratory infection is a valid one. These are the two main diseases that will put a good team off form. They affect good lofts and the best managers because of race unit exposure and the unavoidable stress associated with racing."
  2. Wonderful!!!! Would love to... Thanks
  3. If only pigeons could talk, eh Tony99? Wonder where and what that pigeon has been up to???? Carol
  4. Lovely pigeons... Welcome Carol
  5. Great day for a Birthday!!! Hope it was a GREAT day for you!!! Carol
  6. Thank You Jack, We have watched your tape several times over the past few days, it explains a lot. We very much enjoyed then basketing our racing cocks and breeding cocks and discussing and rating their eyes and comparing that to race and breeding records. What a way to spend the fourth of July eh! only a pigeon fancier... We will do the hens next, but we made some interesting discoveries. We still have lots to learn... Yes, I understand and have observed rough handlers, some are so grabby, but I didn't realize about holding the bird against ones stomach and I am guilty myself. But no more, and I will point it out to others at shipping too. I'm brave, I'm a woman pigeon flyer!! ;D I doubt you would ever find your way to my Brooklyn, it is not Brooklyn NY, it is Brooklyn Washington, on the west coast and out in the boonies. But if you ever get near, I would very much enjoy meeting you and hearing your seminar. Yours in the Sport Carol

    WINGS

    Thank You Mealybar Carol
  8. Hi Jack, We recently viewed one of your videos and found ourselves with more questions. I was happy to say I knew where to get the answers. 1. You mention that birds only come into form after they begin to molt. So is it correct to say you should be racing molting birds? 2. What about when they are missing more than one flight on each side? 3. You mention the correct way to hold and handle a pigeon, not to hold it against your stomach. Why is this? More questions later. Thank You Carol
  9. When a bird is like that and then suddenly what you think is better, you may lose it when you send it down the road because inside it is really not all better.

    WINGS

What do ya and don't ya like to see in your racers wings and why???? I know I know... feathers ;D But besides that what is a good long distance wing look like and what does a good sprint wing look like???? Carol
  11. I have just this year been reading, listening and learning about wings, the flights and secondaries and the effects on the racing distance etc. But what I have been hearing from more than one fancier is that the secondaries should be long at least half as long as the primaries when the wing is closed, and should go clear up snug to the body and tail when open. Also when this wing is open there is practically no step between the secondaries and primaries. Ray, from what I understand in the quote above this is oposite to your opinion, is that right? I'm not wanting to argue the point just wondered if I understood your statement right. Carol
  12. After the stress of rearing six young cocci or canker organisms have probably multilpied and been passed on to the young one who does not have immunities to fight it yet. Check out the parents carefully, look in there throat and mouth and check their droppings.
  13. You must not have read the book very good, because doctor Walker does suggest that you do treat and names several of their top flyers that do.
  14. Hi D Dave, I don't fly widowhood but I do flag my birds. I can't always get them down the road so I flag them instead. I get them used to being flaged as YB's so they know what it's all about. My OB's fly natural and there are always some that want to get back to their nest, so I flag them for 45 min when I can't train them down the raod. MsPigeon

  17. Ohhhhh!!!!! ::)Thanks......Everyone!!!!!! ;D I just got home from having a nice lunch out with my Mom and my best friend Kathy. Kathy's birthday is tomorrow and we have been celebrating our birthdays together for years. Except... as we were just reminising, it used to be we celebrated my birthday from 9:00pm till midnight and then hers from midnight to 2:00am. We decided it was always funner by the time it was her birthday. Thanks so much, this is nice!!! :K) My sweetie is working the night shift so it was nice to come home to you guys and gals all wishing me a happy birthday!! ;D ;D
  18. It can be very suttle. You may not even see any signs of it in the loft but they don't make it home. Go in the loft at night and listen for sneezing or rattles in their breathing. Look in their mouth to check their throat and tonsils and what the syliva looks like. Check their nostrils closely for any discjarge or dust sticking inside their nostrils do to dampness from a slight discharge. Dr. Collin Walkers book goes into detail. Carol
  19. Sorry to be so long getting back to ya Linda, there's just not enough time in the day these days! My replacement for 18015 is IF 05 LCI 6222. Thanks Carol
  20. If your weather was anything like ours Saturday I can certainly understand Hyacinth! We had head winds from the NW @ 35 or better and rain, rain, rain... The liberator said it was good at release (Basket slough, OR) and almost all his way home. At least we had good returns! Carol
  21. I lost one of my entries too Linda. It isn't a very straight answer we are getting about replacement! If it is OK to replace let me know, otherwise I will just fly the two left also. Thanks Carol
  22. Very nice team Linda! And I like their team name. How did you come up with it? Is it something about the team that helps you name them? Carol

    yb sickness

I don't know exactly what YB sickness is as it seems to take so many different forms. This may be due to the secondary infections as was mentioned by Nancy View Lofts. I know that YB's have a lot of stress when being weaned, molting, training, etc, etc. I think the best thing you can do is to keep the stresses to a minimum. Make sure they don't have any parasites in or out, give good food and clean water with what ever your program calls for in it. But I have heard that people put bleach in the water to keep viruses from spreading via the water. If you are unfortunate to notice YB's not feeling well then slow down on training or loft flying, just let them rest and get through it. Sure don't want them sitting around out in the rain and cold during this time. Plenty of time for training when they are done molting and feeling GOOD!
  24. I remember you Tommy, I'm so glad you have come back to keep us posted of your success. I hope you stick around and answer questions cause you are obiviosly doing things right! Keep us informed Tommy and many more wins to ya. Yours in the sport. Carol
