im not sure as these are my first birds and dont really want to lose them as they are from good stock birds,,they came here and was put under foster parents and i think thats where i got it from ,i know bad move by me but thats history now and its what can be done ,do i let it take its cause ? do i treat again hoping it will fix things and i know its not good to keep treating ? do i kill them all ,maybe they all havent got it ? i really dont know what to do and im feeling pretty low right now and feel like quiting before i start im not going to do that but its how i feel right now.i had a feeling the baytrill didnt work so good because its been down well into minus here and dont think they have been taking on much water ,well i know they havent looking at the drinker every day maybe it would be better to give them 0.1 ml straight down the beak so i know they are getting there dosage is that too much im not sure ?

Ok here we go ,i tested my birds with a mercasystems test kit and it was positive ,so i treat with 10% baytril for ten days 1.5ml in 1 and a half litres water no grit ect just clean food and medicated water and that was finished last sunday the loft was sterilized with virkon from top to bottom beginning of treatment and again on the last day its also cleaned out every day so ive re tested today 6 days after treatment and get another positive result which is has really kicked me in the you know where,i only have 8 birds and dont really want to lose them and start again, they are looking good but im worried about this whole salmonella thing ,what do you all think i should do now treat again or what ?im really cheesed off at the moment so take it easy on me thanks

Why not Baytril Peter ? and also what do you think to these tests with florenicol ?Paratyphoid caused by Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium is the main bacterial disease in pigeons. The ability of Salmonella serovar Typhimurium to persist intracellularly inside pigeon macrophages results in the development of chronic carriers, which maintain the infection in the flock. In this study, the effect of drinking-water medication with florfenicol on Salmonella infection in pigeons was examined. The pharmacokinetics of florfenicol in pigeons revealed a relatively high volume of distribution of 2.02 liters/kg of body weight and maximum concentrations in plasma higher than the MICs for the Salmonella strain used (4 microg/ml) but quick clearance of florfenicol due to a short half-life of 1.73 h. Together with highly variable bioavailability and erratic drinking-water uptake, these parameters resulted in the inability to reach a steady-state concentration through the continuous administration of florfenicol in the drinking water. Florfenicol was capable of reducing only moderately the number of intracellular salmonellae in infected pigeon macrophages in vitro. Only at high extracellular concentrations (>16 microg/ml) was a more-than-10-fold reduction of the number of intracellular bacteria noticed. Florfenicol treatment of pigeons via the drinking water from 2 days after experimental inoculation with Salmonella serovar Typhimurium until euthanasia at 16 days postinoculation resulted in a reduction of Salmonella shedding and an improvement in the fecal consistency. However, internal organs in florfenicol-treated pigeons were significantly more heavily colonized than those in untreated pigeons. In conclusion, the oral application of florfenicol for the treatment of pigeon paratyphoid contributes to the development of carrier animals through sub-MIC concentrations in plasma that do not inhibit intracellular persistency. i do appreciate the input by the way. -

Thanks for the reply and now i know what i need to do. Kindest Regards Nick

does that mean there isnt any louvers at the bottom ? just in one side at top and out the other or entering the top and out the bottom ?please clarify this for me
-
Thanks for the response guys ,its been a calm day today here and the only thing i could smell was the smell of new wood so i guess im ok at the moment but i only have 8 birds in it and the max i will have is about 38 young birds when the loft is full which is about 14ft by 8ft.again thank you its very much appreciated
-
well im almost bald myself hahahha i think it is worrying about the birds ive got in the loft trying to give them the best i can as ive only got 8 latebreds from good stock from england that i need to keep healthy to build my team with next season so i have something different to what most have here in iceland.

Thanks Geordie thats put my mind at ease trying to think of a design that would draw the air out even if the winds hitting it
-
does it not matter which way the air goes out as i thought the stale air which rises would just be getting blown back in the loft with the air coming in from the rear top ? and going down into the birds section ?
-
Hi guys and girls Just wondering if anyone knows how to get the circulation to come in at the front bottom of my loft and out the rear top above the false roof inside ,ive noticed the wind does seem to hit the back of the loft alot and so it comes in and pushes the air down rather than it being drawn up and out also i dont want the louvers at the back on the bottom as im building a breeding section there and its also a very cold easterly wind too ,so is there some sort of build that would make the air go out the back even if the wind is hitting it ? at the moment its a 2 inch gap running the full length underside of roof facing the floor similar to the front but not as wide.im also going to put bigger louvers in the front and one on each side all at floor level.
