Building My First Raised Loft, Advice Needed
AlphaAl replied to AlphaAl's topic in Lofts, Fixtures & Fittings
Some good advice their, so I think I will use the 4x2 treated for floor frame. I shouldn't need to anchor it down, as I'm using my 2 block garden side walls & back wall, so basically just building a front & a roof, none of my internal fittings or nest boxs etc will be touching either walls, cause I'll be putting 2x1 with damp proof on the walls first & screw fittings to that so wil have air flow around the whole loft. With the floor I was thinking of putting lino on top of ply floor ? Would the t@g not hold dirt in the groove ? -

Yeah some of it will be up on block towers & have wood pannels with vents in between that I can open & close to store stuff underneat like baths & stuff. But that's a good idea with the bitumen never thaught of that, cheers -
Cheers lads,i have tried google & iv seen that pic you put up, but you can't see how the bird actually gets trapped or stays their while you take the ring off to be clocked, iv never seen a stall trap in real life so was wondering how you hold the bird their, if you no what I mean.

Hi lads, I'm just drawing up plans for my new & first racing loft & trying to figure out things in my head. It will be up on blocks. So I'm going to build a 3 x 2 frame paint it with some sort of wood preservative sit it on the blocks, were its touching the blocks I'm going to put damp proof under the frame. Then I'll be screwing wbp plywood probs 3 quarter inch to the frame, this will be my floor. Im wondering do I need to or should I paint the under side if the ply with wood preservative ?? Their will be air flow under neat as I will be putting vents in the block work. Any tips or advice on building a raised loft would be great cheers, ill try and get a pic up of my design Al

Great read walter, very interesting, you really have my brain working overtime now on what to do. As I'm am new to racing sport I use to just do all my show birds in one go a few weeks before the yb show & never had to think about putting vaccine back in fridge, cause I would use it all or dispose of what was left, cause any birds that were bred after that would not be going to a show till the next year, so they wouldn't be done till then cause they would be mixing with anyones birds & I never bought in ybs so never had to worry. But now its a diff story cause I'm just starting out so I need to buy in some ybs so I'll have enough to compete with. Decisions decisions....

Ok iv ordered the harkers 3 in 1, & have decided to just give the new birds the tabs for now just to be safe & will do my own birds just before the trainning with other birds starts.

Brilliant mate, I'll look into getting some of that, just to have, sounds like it would take alot of the hassel out of it, cheers

And how do you do it ?, as in I use the liquid or powder form, cause that's what I have their, but each one has to be dosed over a few days, so it takes more then a week to treat, so they might be a bit strong & flighty by the time I put then with the rest, would you think ?

Nice looking bird
-
Yeah Ill defo give them the pmv jabb, not sure what's going on here with it the vaccine I'm waiting for the club to come back too me with some info. What would your advice be on adding the new additions to the YB loft ?
-
Yeah have an idea what it is, I could just use some half inch ply or something & put a few nails through it, might try that, the *expletive removed* will only stand on it once, ha

Very nice looking loft mate, keep the pic's coming of the inside

Hi lads, I'm looking for some advice or tips on what you all do or would do. Iv been keeping & showning fancy pigeons for a few years & iv never dosed or treated any YBs until a week or 2 before a show for canker, trico, etc & the pmv vaccine. But any new birds iv ever bought I have quarantined them for about a month & treated them for every thing before the ever got near my other birds. Now I'm only starting out with racers & I have just weaned 5 chicks & put them in YB loft,i don't want to treat them for anything till about 2 weeks before the race season or as soon as I get pmv vaccine, cause I'm a believer in letting their imune system build up. So my question is iv just got 5 more chicks off someone, I'll keep them in a cage for 2 days just to see how their getting on, But should I worm them at least or what would you advice me to do, sorry about the long write up, but its just something iv never done before & I know I can't quarantine Ybs for to long cause they'll get to strong & will miss out on getting use to the loft regime & stuff, so any help would be great, cheers Al

Hi lads, I'm looking for some tips or ideas on keeping pesky cats off my loft roof. Basically my side garden walls are adjioned to each side of the loft, & the cats are walking along the wall & onto the roof. So I'm wondering what you guys do to stop them. Cheers Al
