  1. Another article Before reading this article I would like to tell you that I DO NOT AGREE! with putting chlorine, bleach or any other chemical like that into your birds drinking water. These chemicals are toxic to the birds, in the article below you will notice that Dr. Marx states that after using the chlorine in his loft his loft was essentially disease free. I have no doubt that Dr. Marx’s birds were disease free because the chlorine will kill all bad bacterias in the birds however along with killing the “bad†bacteria the “Good†bacteria in the birds will also be destroyed which in turn will destroy the birds immune system and natural immunity to disease. Let me give you a little scenario lets say you chlorinate your birds drinking water in your loft yes your birds seem to be disease free but after drinking the chlorinated water your birds immune system becomes weak. Now lets say you ship your birds to a race and now your birds are kept in a basket for two to three days that doesnt chlorinate their water. Without the chlorine acting as an artificial immune system in the birds your birds own weakened immune system will be bombarded by normal bacteria from the new birds that they come in contact with. Now your birds are highly subseptable to new disease that normally the chlorine would have killed and so on and so fourth. My opinion when keeping pigeons is to only medicate when absoluetly necessary. Some fanciers in my opinion go overboard and weaken the natural immunity of their birds with artificial supplements. The reason why I posted the below article was to show you different ideas and opinions that fanciers have. Again I DO NOT agree with chlorinating your birds drinking water, in my opinion please use it for what is was meant for; a cleaning solution and a cleaning solution only. The addition of common household bleach to the drinking water does, indeed, have beneficial effects on pigeon health. This seems a little weird since the drinking of cholrinated water has negative implications in human health, especially with suggestions that it may be incriminated in the increased rate of cancer. Chlorine is a strong chemical which binds to most organic molecules and can change their chemical identity, making some non-toxic compounds become toxic. Personally, I use a filter on my drinking water which removes chlorine; but my pigeons drink a lot of it with what I percieve as beneficial effects. NEVER PUT ANYTHING ELSE IN THE DRINKING WATER AT THE SAME TIME AS CHLORINE. P.S the famous Janssen Bros only used water from a well
  2. Read this article a while back Chlorine, a wonderful element for maintaining seasonal lasting health. It can also be the number one cause for lowering a pigeon’s seasonal lasting level of health. I have seen it so many times in both the UK and Ireland, fanciers using unfiltered tap water to treat or administer medications to their birds. Chlorine is a very strong chemical that can change the chemistry identity of certain products making them a lethal toxin, as many of you already know this but in most cases pigeon diseases are transmitted via the birds drinking water. When you are treating your birds, whatever your flavor may be use filtrated water, to treat with regular unfiltered tap chlorinated water you are just flying blindfolded and just throwing away your hard earned money on expensive products. You are not really getting to the core of the treatment, yes a number of your birds are going to be treated but there are also a number of your birds that are just not receiving the adequate chemical ingredients from the product that they need to be a success in health, hence, you are destined for seasonal brake in health. When you see lofts braking down during the season 98% of the time is because of poor product administration, your birds have started off great showing vigorous signs of health and half way through the season your birds are down showing clear signs of sickness of which you originally thought you combated this in the beginning with the appropriate treatment but the fact is a very clear and simple one, you weakened and in many cases changed the solution content with Chlorinated tap water. Just as so many you are aware of the benefits of probiotics and the build up of a birds immune system after administration of harsh antibiotics, you must also be aware that your regular Chlorinated tap water is setting you up for seasonal health failure among your birds when used to administrate or treat your birds. As so many of you are guilty of this, so was I at one point in time, treating my birds, looking good for the season and into the first half of the season my birds would be down showing clear signs of illness and again like so may fanciers would also be reaching, grasping for possible causes and any possible treatments, once again flying blind just not knowing what to do. I'm sure many of you have found yourself in this situation. The treatment for seasonal health is to administrate correctly and use a carbon filter over your pigeon tap water, to remove all traces of Chlorine, once your birds are treated correctly you can remove the carbon filter because Chlorine also has many added benefits, but during any form of treatment it’s an absolute No No. When I was first told all about Chlorine, I personally thought it was just another fancier’s opinion in regards marinating pigeon health, since enforcing and conditioning myself to take the correct steps when administrating medicine and treatments, I have to tell you I have not had a seasonal health brake down in over 10 years. It's such an easy thing to do, administrate correctly because your birds will maintain seasonal health. Keeping them healthy!
  3. colour gene in pigeons. The cock birds have two colour genes but the hen only has one so therefore straight away we can make the statement that ‘The colour of a hen is what you see is what you get’ providing there are no colour modifiers involved. The cock bird on the other hand carries an additional gene to the one that you can see, but will always be the same as or lower than the one you can see, because if it were greater then that would be the colour of the pigeon. Nature has helped us to a certain extent in as far as there are only three colours these are Red (BA) Blue (+) and Brown ( and there is an order of dominance. Think of a ladder, which you can go down but not go up. Study of the genetics has established that there is a dominant and recessive colour to wild type (+). Yes wild type is Blue (+) Red (BA) is dominant to wild type and Brown ( is recessive. What this means is that two Browns can produce nothing but Browns or its dilute Khaki (if the cock is carrying Khaki). Whereas, Blues can produce not only Blues or their dilute Silver, but also Brown’s and Khaki’s but not Reds ie. Browns are down the ladder but Reds are up the ladder. On the other hand Reds can produce Reds, Blues and Browns or any of there dilutes because they are all down the ladder. There are also sex-linked dilatants on the same gene but at different loci (location), which are Dilution (d), Pale (dp) and Reduced ® all recessive to wild type. I am not going to over complicate the issue so therefore will only deal with one of these, which is dilution (d). For the observant ones amongst you will have already noticed that the Dominate colours use Capital Letters, Wild type is the + symbol and recessive colours uses lower case letters. For the record also on the sex linked gene appears the Almond gene but not to over complicate this short paper we will ignore for now. <![endif]-->
