2, spend as much time with your birds as you can, watch them, learn there habits and what makes them tick.
the pin holes are mite, they live inside the quil and the holes show when the new flights grow, easy to cure by dipping etc so no excuse to not sort the problem.
If you give anything added to water you don't know how much they are having, birds will drink more or less with weather conditions etc whereas if just plain water is given medication/additives can be measured with the amount of food given.

There are sellers on there from Bristol that sell a lot of birds they don't have, couriers go there to find its false address etc.
These people are foreign.

did you look at the rest of the birds, show racers unrung, or had they had the rings cut off?
All birds were poor quality!
