a flashing light is more likely to keep the birds in the air and prone to attack! It may deter a sparrow hawk from striking on the loft roof when the birds are used to the light but the sparrow hawk will also get used to the light as it would a plastic owl etc!
  3. far to many birds in both:- Race loft 6' x 6', if for youngbirds then prob 25-30max if oldbirds you could fit 8 widowhood boxes across the back wall which would accomodate 8 pairs in comfort. Stock loft 6' x 6', again you can fit 8 good sized boxes but 6 pairs would be more comfortable. In both the above the more space the birds have the happier they will be in there environment, a lot of youngbird fly aways are due to overcrowding. Put 30 yb's in a section with 30 perches and you'll lose 10 of them, put 20 birds in a section with 30 perches and you are unlikely to lose any in flyaways.
  4. thats the NFC sec and he doesn't keep a record of rings and will refer you to the RPRA

    widow hood

with yearlings a lot depends on how much education they had as youngbirds! If they were well trained and raced they have experience, if they wern't then you need to treat them almost as youngbirds!
  6. you won't breed any yellows unless the white carries yellow or dilute gene!
  7. Maths clearly not your strong point!
  8. Its a NFC ring and you'll need to go via RPRA

    update

well done Ben, keep it up!
  10. no problem racing on either system but yearlings can get overwound easily, just be cautious with them.
  11. well done, keep up the good work! Phil
  12. I agree with Martin, get a team of youngbirds. You won't pick up stock at this time of year as most are breeding now. What size loft have you got etc?

    please help

Rob, if you are looking for a mealy to pair to a hen you already have then you surely need an adult bird but if you want a bird to let out and pair to your hen then yes a young bird would be better. Tell us a bit more about what your intentions are. Phil
  14. There is a bird rescue centre near you that may be better equipt to help the bird, i'm guessing its a wood pigeon or a feral but they would have the experience to deal with the little fella. Good luck and well done for taking the time to help him/her. Phil

    deep litter

i've seen it used but when it gets very dry it gets dusty and gets messy if it gets wet. Also the birds seem to spend a lot of time forageing in it and may even eat it so you need to be careful whats in it!
  18. don't push your luck! lol
