if i thought my birds were healthy enough i wouldnt bother with it, but i dont suppose a half teaspoonfull in the water wouldnt do any harm once a week, and yes it is good for sterilizing the water dishes out. i was more concerned about bathing the crop out during crop infections to stop any bacteria going further, but if birds are healthy they will not need it as they would build up their own immunity in normal circumstances jimmy.p.s thats a five pint drinker im talking about,, best of luck

hi pecked hen i wouldnt bathe the bird by hand , but if it would take a bath under its own steam by all means, i dont think he would take a bath if he was poorly , mind you if he did , it would be a sure sighn of improve ment,,,but to bathe it by hand, i think, would just put the bird through more stress, again wish you well jimmy

we are saying that yb sickness is caused by stress and obviously they go through a certain amount of stress, but yb racing has been going on a long time now ,since 1900 its only in recent years that it has reared its ugly head, , pigeon fanciers years ago had fewer ybs , not that im advocating fewer ybs to breed ,but if youve enough room, enough time , and maybe partnerships, and can afford it good luck.we all say we kept fewer bird years ago, which is correct ,but, what most fanciers dont say is ,we also had small lofts. idont think, of so much as the amount, its the way we treat the amount,.if pigeons are kept tame and confident in their owner, this at least lessons the stress,i have seen fanciers, grabbing ybs in mid air day after day, throwing them in the basket , immediately dumping them in a car boot ,racing to the toss point throwing them up right away, these ybs actualy become terrified of their owners and are living on there nerves, which increases the stress by far, now as far as we know it is an airborne desease and a digestive one, now we cannot compair their digestive system to ours, its completely differant, a bird has a crop and a gizard, so i see know harm using milton in their water to ,which would bathe their crops[ it does the babies no harm,to clean their bottles]and as its airborne, all the birds in the loft would get this ,treatment i notice a point with speckled to feed pellets, i see her point completely, the pellets turn to mush ,so other birds cant pick it up, i think this is a good idea. as most of birds that are sick will bring up grain and other birds will eat it right away, i reaiize all this is a very difficult subject , and a very serious one ,but keeping the stress level to the lowest possible circumstance definately is a help.

a very practical method of testing the adequacy of your ventilation, is to get down on the floor on the inside of the inlets and blow smoke out .of your mouth ,the smoke should rise immediately and go straight out of the outlet, in the apex roof,as described earlier, letting a down feather float down on the inside of the inlet is another way of testing and in this case the feather should not reach the floor before being convected up and out the roof. hope this is of some help.

well done speckled, theres not many fanciers getting full returns nowadays credit where credits due

earlier this year ,the girl across the road handed in, babie street pigeon which had been injured, i kept this in a box till it had recovered, then at her request put in my small loft and aviary ,they could only see 3 ydsout the aviary facing my house, she popped over from time to time to see how ,,,tyson,,,, was, thats what she called it, i kept on trying to explain to her it would be better free and would join its pals;;;so evventualy gave in , but to make sure it didnt come back, i released it about 5 miles away and to my surprise it was on the loft the next day, the bird had never been out and hardly even seen out side, yet hes there, so im stuck wiyh tyson. the best of it is some of my stock birds got out [bred in the loft but never been out] thy dissapeared alltogether, i think, just out of curiosity ill keep taking tyson further just to see how far he will go p.s the bird is in tip top condition.

hi celtic ,just reading your [experience] with amtrack, it used to be the case that they[ gaurenteed]24 hour delivery,if that chap waited over 24 hours he would have some sort of claim read the small print , it maybe differant now, my experience a few years ago, i had 2 tbs sent from nottingham, and after waiting in all day they never arrived ,so between the sender [who was livid]and i , we made a lot of phoncalls that day, both to each other and both to amtrack, however it materialised that at 5pm they were delivered to the wrong gilmerton, they were delivered to gilmOrton in dundee, then when i complained, they said they would feed and water them and deliver them on the third day[2ybs 3 weeks old] well after a lot of debating they decided to send the ybs by TAXI from dundee to edin, i got them later that evening ,they refunded the carriage, but not the phone calls ok mistakes can be made, but theres a post code which they allways ask for, so in fact they broke their own contract, and really i think they could well afford a taxi at the prices they charge???? jimmy white

would i be right in saying that shu allow ybs to have address rings on, iknow that it used to be the case, if it is still ,so why on earth are fanciers not phoning up??? and why dont .the fanciers put address rings on.there seems to be thousands of ybs lost all over, with address rings on they could be back in their loft within a day or two, just asking?

hi wings, hope your doing well, just my own point of veiw with late breds , istill liked to basket train them and maybe 2 or 3 short tosses around the place but found the most dangerous times were early the following year, iwould prefer to train them a bit when the cold east winds go and the temp, rises a bit, even with yearlings i started them in may. the first 3 races itraned about 6 just for these early races, but after they had been trained and raced they would be stopped for the following year to allow my main team to start, just a thought wings

if any one you know on holiday in continent tell them to get you fragyl [i think thats the right name,] its sold over the counter there and is very cheap, its actualy for humans and available on prescription here.it will cost you about 3 euros

when ybs are thick in the moult ,being basketed day after day trained, ,raced ,transporters overnight maybe two nights the stress they go through is enormous , the darkness ones have completed that body moult in peice before training starts, ok they have another body moult and flights, again when the stresses of racing is over, it just means that they are going to the races better dressed id rather have a well trained yb and streetwise yb i,e hawks wires etc. i beleive any young creature should be trained in the year of birth, but what they remember as babies , they never forget , but i like training them with a jacket on. if their destined for the distance ,they dont need much as yearlings3 tosses 4 races plenty of exercise round the loft and as 2 year olds or even over they will score at the distance if its in them, but with pigeons theres allways exeption to the rule.

THE IDEA WITH THE MATCH IS WELL OUTDATED NOW, IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE SULPHER IN THE MATCH THAT HELPED, NOWADAYS THERES FAR MORE MODERN ITEMS ON THE MARKET, SPARTRIX IS AS GOOD AS ANY BUT A LOT DEARER THAN A BOX OF MATCHES
-
all i can say on that subject was that i tried both systems the same year ,the darkness yb hammered the other ones, i stopped the natural ybs after good training and 4 races, let them moult out in peice and quiet, as yearlings i found there was no differance between one team or the other, they then all raced to the same loft and had the same treatment but all raced just as welln
