  1. i had a widowhood cock, one of the quietest in the loft, after never seeing his hen for about3 weeks, i put 2, 3 day old ybs under it, it took to them like a duck taking to water,,,,ive never seen a bird change so much in all my life, it would have taken the hand off you, and the bird dualy obliged from 550 miles
  2. ;D ;D ;D still got the gas tv,,and the pre war wallpaper ;D ;D ;D ;D;D was glad of the gas tv the other night we had a power cut ;D ;D ;D ;D;D i was the only one here watching songs of praise ;D ;D ;D doc. ;D
  3. it all depends on the weather in my veiw, as commented before the pigeon will take the safest way home, on windy days the birds will fly low ,,and on warm, blue sky day with little or no wind they will fly high, ive often watched the birds on race day from one of the highest points in the borders [ carter bar] and you can see them do exactly this.,,, the winners are the fittest birds
  4. i would keep an open mind till i see the prog. but it should prove very interesting.
  5. :) THINGS LOOKING GOOD, KEEP US POSTED,,,,,FINGERS CROSSED :)
  6. had a phone call from a fancier, fom e of scot. telling me the rspb have put a box up for the perigrines to breed, at cockenzie power station, and are monitering them HOW THE HELL CAN THEY DO THIS WITH THE THREAT OF AVIAN FLY ARROUND, ITS ALLMOST A CRIME IN ITSELF
  7. yes , johny , that goes for stock bird as well
  8. :) very well put silver wings, you seem to be a very understanding , sensible, and helpfull pigeon fancier :)
  9. plenty protein ,linseed in conditiner, and plenty baths
  10. agree with most posts above, but i would put a hungry bird beside it eachday, and let it see it eat, it should be eating maples itself by 16 days
  11. garlic is not a cure all,, but it has some great qualities for pigeons[preventative qualities]
  12. thats exactly what i was trying to say rose, theres as many differant types of pigeons as there is differant types of races 5 to 600 miles in fast 1600 velocity,[ ive seen higher velocity than that] could be won by a sprinter, but get a 500 to 600 mile race doing 1200 or less, takes a differant sort of bird alltogether thats what i was meaning saying horses for courses,, ie if i knew what the velocity was likely to be, i would send the birds accordingly [you can only guess by the weather forecast, what the race is liable to be like]
  13. i dont know the answer to that, johny, but what i can say is that the birds that hardly look like feeding young have been better birds for me [to me their healthier, and go through less stress, whilst feeding]
  14. sounds to me their dead in the shell, BUT its very easy to get the dated wrong, if you put the egg up to your ear and listen very carefully you can hear the yb" tapping" its still possible for them to hatch, as they may have not been sitting properly the first day or two, anyway i hope your lucky and they hatch

  16. the bull system , westy is basicaly, having one stud cock and so many hens, kept seperately, allowing the cock to tread each hen every day, so that all the hens lay and you can foster the eggs,so you can get more ybs at one time from the one cock, theres more to it than that but thats the basics , dont try it yourself ;D ;D ;D ;D
  17. ;D ;D ;D ;D just noticed that celtic ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
  18. same here andrew paired an out and out sprint bird to my old distance breed, was 25 national,,, had an out and out sprint bird top the combine both 505 miles, but found for the 600odd miles needs a special kind of bird, sir colin was 2 national flying 608 miles 1st bird flying over 600 miles in a hard north east wind, i doubt whether these first two birds would have got home,,, theres as many differant types of races than there is differant types of pigeons, so its horses for courses p.s a yb bred from sir colin topped the fed from penrith, about eighty odd miles.
  19. ;D ;D with the forecast here for sunday i think it will be an overcoat ;D ;D snow
  20. how did we get distance birds and sprint birds in the first place,,, by selective breeding, anything can be tried in breeding, and with the proper management, youll find out their worth,,,good or bad
  21. :) good luck, with them
  22. they might be more interested in laying ,nesting themselves , but would keep my eye on them just in case
  23. ;D ;D off course you will, your only a few years older than 21 ;D ;D
  24. hi pecked hen , i would move them seperately, when each pairs ybs are about 14 days, if you put the ybs on the floor the parents will still feed them , but the parents will then take a box and lay again
