  1. you often find this with obs with broken legs, its as hyacinth says, sometimes they will fly ok , youll be able to judge it better next year in a few tosses, to look on the positive side ive won races with birds like this, but as with any injury ,theres allways doubts
  2. i have thought more and more of the oppertunity of jack barkels writtings, and would certainly like to buy his books, can anyone get them,,i would have no hesitation in paying the costs,, i find the man quite fascinating, down to earth, and pulls no punches, a very gennuine man indeed,
  3. you deserve it paulo, for all the work and effort youve put in,,,,best of luck :)
  4. what about the scottish birds, their all south roaders , going to all parts of scotland comming from as far as worcester and even cheltenham, unc south as well
  5. i agree with the lastwo posts also,,,,,i remember breeding ybs early, putting them on darkness system, waited till they were fully body moulted, put them on normal light on the longest day, THEN trained them,,,,,,they were thick, to say the least, and took a bit of getting going, and lost a few, i would say they should be trained as soon as their separated,ie, basket trained,,often, fed and watered , then at no later than 10 weeks old start training them on the road, even short distances but keep them at it, and if its ybs you want to win with , if you could manage 50 mile every day weather permitting, youll win with ybs,,,,,but a differant kettle of fish with obs. personally i would like my ybs trained raced 120 miles and stopped,[ thats if i had any left at that stage nowadays]
  6. dont know anything about solar flares or such like,,, but do know there are certain days [for whatever reason] the old birds in the loft are edgy and nervious, and a strange quietness,,,,have trained the ybs on a day like that ,and had a bad toss as with other fanciers on the same day???
  7. great to see the good comming out of fanciers,[we should all be pulling the same rope]
  8. best of luck tom

  10. AND REMEMBER BOBBYCARUTHERS IS VERY VERY CAREFULL WHEN IT COMES TO LIBERATING PIGEONS, MID LOTHIAN WERE OFF AT 11 OR 1130 AND AS STEVE APPLEBIES REPORT SAYS SUN SHINING AFTER 9 30 AT SCOTCH CORNER , AND STILL COPED IT ,,,,AS WITH ALL THE FEDS THAT DAY AROUND THAT AREA, APPROX 6 FEDS 6 DIFFERANT CONVOYERS, SOMETHING TELLS ME THEY WERE NOT" ALL" WRONG,, I STILL GO BY MY PREVIOUS POSTSON THIS , SOMETHING IN THE AIR ,,,,ATMOSPHERICS I WAS A TV AERIAL RIGGER,FOR YEARS, SOME DAYS WERE GOOD FOR RECEPTION OTHERS WERE BAD, BAD DAYS WERE DUE TO ATMOSPHERICS, AND THE" TV" NOT GETTING THE PROPER" SIGNAL",DUE TO THIS, ,,JUST A THOUGHT??

  18. THATS IF YOUR VERY KEEN TO WIN YB RACES
  19. FIFE KING,,,,,,YOUR POST TOUCHED A NERVE, CANNOT SEE THE POINT OF IT, AT ALL, APART FROM UPSET PEOPLE ,,,,,,NOT THE NICEST OF POSTS,
  20. in 1958 i have an old loft record book, started off with 9 ybs, finished up with 7 from the first toss to the last race , sent two to yb national which was cheltenham then [allmost 300miles] and got two back , no where on result, but the two back, if i tried that today , i dont think that would be possible, we still had the big team men sending 60 , 70, they still didnt get the losses as of recent years, we still had bad races then, but at least they got home,,,,,so it does really makes you wonder,,,,a very interesting topic,,,it would make a great study for some of the top scientists at some university, just as a post script, i remember the worcestor disaster [about 280 miles] where they were liberated in mist and rain, only a handfull of birds back,[ ididnt get any] but got them all home the next day, like most of the fanciers, that just doesnt seem to happen nowadays,,,if their not home on the day you see very few of them back, could it be the constitution of the birds now, could it be hawks, or what could it be, really find it hard to answer ,,it wasnt just lanarshire that coped it , midlothian ,pentland, fife, e of scot, and other organisations, all liberated at differant times, from 7 am to 11am,allthough lanarkshire seemed to get the biggest bang,,, i really feel for all you lads, who have put so much in to it
  21. hi sportographs,,,,,very interesting post, and certainly food for thought, but my thoughts on the homing ability of young pigeons go a bit further than that, i agree what your saying that many birds raced nowadays are in fact bred off , exactly what you say, but on the other side of the coin , i know many top class fanciers that have raced and won, with generations of well tried stock, flying natural, but still suffering the same losses as the rest, which leads me to beleive theres something in the air , or atmosphere, which was not there 20 or so years ago, even 50 years ago, we still had the big team men, but didnt suffer the losses which are happening today. you may be quite right what you say, and i agree with you, but my thoughts are that its not just down to the one thing, my thoughts are that it is a combination of many things, however an exellant post and would be ,interested to see what feed back comes from it, anyway thanks for your post and may i say youve explained your veiws very well.
  22. yes as soon as you feel their educated enough, safer kept at home, less stress and a good moult, its difficult enough nowadays to have good 2 year olds for the distance
  23. so sorry for all you lads, it seems allmost every fed coped it,ive had some pm,s that would make you weep,, its now when tempers get frayed and blame starts, convoyers are the first to get the blame, but there were a lot of feds, and a lot of convoyers, surely they ALL never got it wrong, it does make you wonder whats in the air nowadays, ive noticed , even with training there are days[seemingly quite good ] where all have had losses, then other days, even a bit dodgy where theres been great returns,, clashing could be a thing, but we had clashing years ago, hawks can do a lot of damage to upset a lib, and theres certainly more of them now, but what the answer is , god only knows,,,,i only hope all you lads get more birds home, i feel for you
  24. great going,,congratulations
  25. chris littles [just a thought] in my opinion would certainly worth thinking about , especialy in about the first 4 yb races
