In simple terms !!!!!!.That basically is correct in what you say, ;) . Here in my area ;D ;D ;D across the pond !!!!!!! we have been using that system for 100 odd years etc, with our young birds, when racing in the old bird season (Strange isn't ) Because we start racing in winter, the mating urge is not as pronounced as in summer etc, so we have found that by seperating the sexes & letting them run together for a few hours before going to the races, with a bowl or box etc (Most just have perches in their lofts). The good ones ???????? become as keen as mustard & will fly through a brick wall to get home, so to speak "The bad ones" :P ain't worth a cup full of cold water :D but we don't worry about them to much (easy come easy go), & the funny thing is !!!!!!. the old plodders (Old birds) don't hold a candle to our babies when racing, on average."Strange" But anyone interested in this system as such, might just be surprised & amazed, at what you could achieve. If you gave it a bit of a bash :P in your loft. Enjoy.

But as you have learnt now Chrisss ;) if there was no :'( :'( :'( & pain etc, involved with the hard work. Which many of us do at times, in our attempt to win the odd race or two ;D ;D ;D where would the enjoyment be ??????? : : :. Enjoy.

Sounds like a pretty exciting time to me here, that your about to enter into etc. Don't worry to much about keeping tipplers/tumblers sort of thing, I have know doubt ;D ;D ;D, you will have a great deal of fun & enjoyment with them, & being only a wee lad ;) they will give a good reason to get out of bed each day, to attend to your little flock. If they consider now, that by not allowing pigeons to cross the pond as we say to race.
