I don't know how this would work in pigeons, but if you did that with poultry hens they sometimes got a taste for their own egg shells and started eating the eggs that they layed.

I think that's shocking If they can't look after their own then they should't be allowed to keep any. We have had a couple of good responses when we have phoned keepers up about their birds, One guy came all the way from aberdeen for his bird and we dropped off another in edinburgh to another guy who really wanted his back, although he said that it would never get out again as he would use it as a stock bird, but, at least he didn't kill it. ;D
