Well as you see my name is John Quinn and i have organised and run sales many times in the past. I have run around collecting birds from here there and everywhere when the donors couldn't manage to get them to me, or i have had friends who are coming to the sales bring birds along from their respective area's. I have auctioned them myself or i have had friends do the auction on my behalf for free. In all those occasions there were no expenses attached to the sales except my fuel costs which i forego because generally its sales for good causes, eg, Lanarkshire Association for Mental Health. I do hope that gives you an idea of who i am and where my morals are at. atb John.

I am just in again and have removed further UNNECESSARY posts. If the abuse doesn't stop i can see warn status' reaching the banning point. DRUNK isn't an excuse either, ave just explained that to one or two in the boozer who were also causing offence. I would expect apologies by PM back and forth tomorrow and hope it improves what has become a ridiculous situation. I would also think one or two might receive Pm's from Archie when he reviews this thread.

Am away tae work noo Davy, less stressful and more straight forward getting a 120 drunks oot ma pub than debating this lol.
-
As everyone on this Forum knows i support ALL ventures where possible and it is my intention to go along tomorrow and nod my head on some of the lots offered, however i do not understand what "expenses" will be incurred if the birds are given free, the venue is free and i assume your own efforts putting this MARVELLOUS sale together is free. ??

I have removed the UNNECESSARY posts and would be obliged if the thread was left for what John intended it for. John

This is your own post Watty, but it seems you have learned all that is needed to be known about vaccination since posting that in fact you don't or are not sure about it. IMO Unless you are qualified PERSONALLY on the nature of the break down of Vaccines then you really aught NOT to be giving advice on it. The post above is Suggesting i am using my Vaccine wrongly, however i don't have a problem with PMV in my lofts so on the Evidence i am doing something right. Ps. it takes 5 yeras to become a doctor, a guy who needs to be told by his patients what's wrong with them!!! To become a Vet takes 7 years and the patients canny talk.

First thing you have to understand is that other than PROVEN pairings the rest are just our best GUESS, much like trying to predict what youngsters will be your future winners. We can't "see" what makes the best pairings, so like racing there is a certain amount of Luck in producing birds that turn out to be YOUR Loft champions, if not Club, Fed or National champs, but that is what we all hope for i suppose. As far as rearing sound Yb's, IMO best leave nature alone, so long as you feed your birds well and give them the usual sundries to pick and choose from they should rear good strong Yb's, if not the Yb's are not going to be up to much anyway. There are many good racers and producers that are POOR parents, so having a couple of good pairs that can do a good job of rearing Yb's to float the eggs under from the "better" doos can be invaluable to a loft. jmo and i sure ain't no expert in this field of our sport despite the pleasure i get from the exercise of putting them together. My brother has been helping me around the lofts this past season, and to be perfectly honest he knows NOTHING about pigeons. However i will let him choose 2 or 3 pairings and i wouldn't be surprised in the least if those pairings produce something better than my "knowledgeable" choices!!

I usually start about 4pm on Christmas eve and I am finished by 6.30pm. Not sure I'll have as much time to spare this year though. !!

I will also say my last on this subject Watty, the manufacturers instructions say we should vaccinate our Yb's at between 20 and 22 days old due to the Yb's immune system's development. I do mine at that age and have never Ever had pmv in my team when using it this way. Yet as is the case in Every loft, not All of my Yb's are weaned at the same time so i am continually introducing Yb's into the team who have been vaccinated less than a week earlier in the nest, this is not detrimental to the ones who have been vaccinated up to 8 weeks earlier. I will add that those fanciers who choose Not to vaccinate EVER, and there are PLENTY of them, should be sweating for the next six weeks because as the birds approach the end of the moult they are more open to contracting diseases of all sorts including PMV. How do i know this? Well in 2001 i was steadily falling into mental ill health and did not vaccinate my Yb's that year, on the 1st of November i had 30 cracking Yb's in my loft just waiting to go to the shows, by the 30th i had ONE left, every other Yb took PMV when on their last or second last flight. These are my personal observations and like yourself i am content with how i use the vaccine because i have no issues with the disease in my lofts and long may that continue for both of us. atvb mate.

It would be interesting to know what the best selling vaccine was Europe wide JAM. Nobilis is cheaper to buy and is oil based, so i imagine their's is more expensive to produce than Colombovac's water based Vaccine, that's my logic anyway but no hard evidence as to the production costs or Europe/World wide sales of either of them. I often wonder what the poultry farmers use for this.

Am no wan for contradicting ye Watty, but the Manufacturers are the ones with most to gain!! Hence their instructions, that Can and Do, put uncertainty into fanciers heads !! The medical reps who go to your Doctor/ Vet/Hospitals are well versed in selling their products in a fashion that generates most income for the Manufacturer they are employed by, if they don't they're soon out of work. Its the very same in all producers practices, whether it be Meds or fruit and Veg. Ambiguous descriptive selling pitches are their forte. The government even knows it's going on and choose not to pull the reigns in, because they also benefit from every sale made, via taxes and generous funding donations from these same manufacturers.

Don't know about that Davy!! Working 2 jobs as well as my Fed duties isnae the lifestyle of the rich lol. It is nice though to win with someone else's bird and share the joy as well as the cash with them. It reminds me of sharing the experience and pleasure of winning when my Da and Uncle were here. You and John aught to come through for one of the LSC nights, always great to welcome fanciers from other area's to our nights, and the fanciers always enjoy mixing with our members and guests when they come along. I'll give you an early warning for next time round so you might be able to fit it in. atvb John.

You get more than one needle with the 100 dose bottle Ian, it is my practice to sterilise and keep needles/syringes after use. The manufacturers instructions are correct, only ONE needle should pierce the rubber seal and remain there until all birds needing vaccinated are done. (cumbersome or not) My advice is to soak the sponge with the surgical spirit, every syringe does 5 birds, when you have done 5 put the injection needle into the sponge and separate it from the syringe, then draw another syringe full through the needle in the bottle, remove the syringe and connect the injection needle from the sponge back onto the syringe and carry on vaccinating with that needle. Your needle will be sterile from being put into the sponge after every 5 birds are vaccinated. If you repeatedly pierce the rubber seal between filling your syringe you are in danger of leaving a hole in the rubber which would ruin all of the vaccine in the bottle. I understand you only keep a small team of birds but others on here have VERY large teams and this is when complications can arise from repeatedly breaching the rubber cap. Also, vaccination fluids are affected more by being exposed to High temperatures for long periods, less so when stored in something other than a fridge, a cool dark place for example will not harm the fluid in the least.
