An intersting piece of history quoted from Dr Anderson's book 'The Sport of Pigeon Racing' p13:-

"Until 1914 the Scottish Fancy formed a section of the National Homing Union but with the growth of the Fancy in Scotland it became apparent that local government was urgently required. Consequently that year the Scottish Fancy launched out on its own and broke away from the parent body and formed the SHU.

At the first meeting to form the union the following were present : Messrs Davidson, Don, Paul, Gardiner, McLean, and myself. I had the honour to be appointed the first President. I held that office for many years and helped the new body in its early days."

What a mess it is in today. Passed officials like Auld Hammy dont even get a mention because his face dont fit. Shambles. Sadly, a shambles with Mr Muppet dragging it down and Mr Barlow looking for ways round a democratic vote to hang on.

Cabin Boy is starting racing this coming year, what choice does he have, SHU or RRPA  :-/

when you think back" you don,t want to really"  but when you do the money they ran with they still have the neck to stand for the next term as if nothing happened then you get this  miraculous recovery showing up on the balance sheet from out of nowhere i rest my case with this lot     pass

there is a club who would gladly let him fly his birds and that would be the milton club and i could make sure he would be accepted their no bother at all

What are they SHU or RRPA?

THEY ARE THE GOVERNING BODIES

I know Alf, It's getting like Sky telly too much channels to pick from, frightened to watch the wrong one incase I upset someone

What with all the associations, feds, and clubs to pick pic from, Cabin Boy is only a quiet 15 year old, looking at racing pigeons, nae wonder we cannae get young folk into the sport.

At 50 ah cannae work it all oot :( :( :(

Could you imagine a young boy spending all his money on some young birds(pigeons) and his first race sending them only to lose them maybe because he joined the wrong group :-/

At 15 he will probably join the one I get him a form for :)

But I do not want him caught up in politics between the associations, and they wouldn't like his maw chapping their doors  :D

Funny, I was thinking exactly this the other day when folk started talking about 'messes'. The real mess is with the overall state of the sport with regards to recruiting its lifeblood - young members - no matter which Organisation (s) or club (s) they join.

My first club membership 1964? I was in partnership with my dad, I was in my teens, and I had company of lots of other teenagers - and younger - in my club.  I had being going about the club for yonks before that, as a non-member. Every other club round about us [bellshill, Lanarkshire] had young folk, and in good proportions too, maybe 4 in 10. And yes we had our proportion of 'auld grumpps' too, who moaned about everything and anything.  :)

43 years later, I'm now one of the many 'auld grumpps' but there's not one teenager or younger member in my club, and I can only think of one teenager in our whole Fed, Lewis in Avonbridge club.

IMHO that's the real mess. Time to concentrate on rectifying that I think, or we could be soon posting about 'the endings of pigeons'. And its not just our sport that's seeing little or no new young blood, seems its a problem in all the sports.

On a more serious note

Kids are different in general these days and so are communities, most teenage kids would not be seen dead with their dads, it would ruin their street cred.

Back when it was common to have lofts then it was different

Kids are so prone to peer pressure these days it's unbelievable, and now there are much easier options to enjoy yourself

I had a choice Football, Rugby, Boxing or Judo were the only clubs you could join for next to nothing

Tennis, Golf, Skiing etc were not the working class kids sports, but they are today.

Then you have the push button sports today that you can play and never get hurt.

Plus pigeon racing is not a spectator sport, so it has no media coverage, where as football, tennis, boxing is and also involves a lot of gambling to keep it alive

Ebay ticket for Celtic against Rangers sold in excess of £1,020, you need a good 50 - 100 pounds to go to a normal game with the family

Yet we greet about ets at £350 which may last for years and makes life easier :-/

Our governing bodies need to get aff their butts and promote the sport and come up with ways to make it sell to the public somehow, they cannae even sell it to the people who love pigeons, in fact they cannae even give it away to fanciers who are leaving the sport

Why on earth would you think that Peggy lad the sport is about finished, Bruno says we should be worried in case we are writing about the end of pigeon racing, but sooner rather than later thats exactly what we will be doing. Also AND Aagain sooner rather than later, we will all be members of the RPRA anyway, dwindling numbers and finances will determine that. As far as I am concerned the more the merrier could'nt give a toss if a guy (OR GAL) is a member of the RPRA if he wants to race his doos thats all that matters. We are a dying breed Peggy, dinasaurs you might say. This sport is going and it won't be coming back lets ALL enjoy it while we still can.
