GRAHAM MITCHELL Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 I pick up the strays for my club from federation transporter which are picked up at Armadale and can safely say they have been well looked after.
jimmy white Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 it is used weekly during yb season to return scottish strays to their owners. transporters or volunteers collect strays from their own area take them to the stray centre and collect any strays for their own area. i think the shu charge £2.35 per bird and the feds then add their own cost. a lot cheaper than amtrack!! thought the rpra could have something organised. shu lead the way again you see ,,,,allthough meaning well, ive no doubt ,,but starts a flame war,,,,"thought the rpra could have something organised ,,, the s h u lead the way again",,,,,,, THIS , my freind, gives fodder for the hungry"
cemetary Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Well done Davy Fleming, the strays that i have had back this year were in good nick. Keep up the good work.
THE FIFER Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Hi Guys, Just taken some time to read through all your commenta regarding SHU STRAY CENTRE which has been based in Armadale for a few years now. Some of you are never ever happy are you, if we didn't organise a stray centre it would cost a lot of guys an awful lot of money and at approx £30 a time and 2 or 3 birds per week, I just wonder how long one may be able to sustain that type of pressure from the pocket. Granted ventilation could be better, but for the amount of birds that sit all week ( only a few ) there is more than ample ventilation within the clubhouse. These birds are fed morning and night with fresh water at same time every single day in good clean baskets . There is also more than ample lighting on 24/7 to allow the birds to obtain a drink whenever they please . As for the condition of the birds that leave us they are normally in very good condition when they leave, except for the ones that come and go normally within 24 hours and are brought in in a very poor condition anyway so it doesn't leave me a great deal of time to do anything with them. As for wing stamps, I am very fortunate I get a good hand from ALL THE GUYS that come up on a friday night and also the lads that come in over the weekend with there transporter to process the birds into there respective baskets and whilst we try our best to make sure everything is ok it is unfortunate mistakes do get get made . It would be nice if people came along and supported the work that we do and not criticise some thing they have never seen and don't know anything about. As for the stray centre in Gretna Green , this is now finished . Hope this answers your thoughts . If you have a problem or wish to talk to me my number is 07961441470 Davy Fleming SHU STRAY OFFICER PS Thanks very much to the guys who made some positive remarks and support to me well done davie, keep up the good work, we would be at a loss without you and our stray birds would iether be in the fields with the streeters or going into someone and costing a few quid and a bit hassle to get them back, with the stray sentre all the work is done for us,
DOVEScot Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Is there not tradesmen or handymen that could go along and improve the conditions that the birds are kept in :-/
bobtail Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 i think the s h u should find somewhere more suitable for our strays with plenty of fresh air the birds do not need to be kept inside as long as they get food and fresh water i am sure there is ample money in the union funds .

The problem would be staffing it, the guys that are doing it seem fine maybe they just need a bit extra help instead :-/
THE FIFER Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 I have never saw the stray centre, probably got to be locked up for vandals,, windows etc, but they do a great job. and I am sure those in charge will know whats best.
Guest IB Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Reading posts, our Stray Centre is as I thought it would be, fit for purpose: to hold & sort birds which are in and out of the place in a matter of hours. Agree that it is a good facility to have, pity it doesn't operate during OB season too, and that there aren't other similar Centres south of the border as it would be a very cheap and efficient method of repatriating pigeons up & down the UK..
