kraftykev Posted May 18, 2014 Report Posted May 18, 2014 Good evening everyone, hope you are all well. I have been talking to a bloke today who asked at what sort of age is a young bird to old to go to another loft and still be able to be let out and race to his new loft. I said at about six weeks as after that they get strong on the wing, is this correct or can they still go to a new home if they are a bit older. thanks kev
andy Burgess Posted May 18, 2014 Report Posted May 18, 2014 the risk of loss will increase with age Kev.
Wiley Posted May 18, 2014 Report Posted May 18, 2014 I remember reading many articles from ad shaerlacken, and he once spoke about the success and the reason why the Germans was so successful at the South Africa one loft race. Their secret was sending 3 month old babies to the loft.

A skilled fancier will break them with relative ease but a novice or poor fancier might never get a Yb settled. Jmo.
OLDYELLOW Posted May 19, 2014 Report Posted May 19, 2014 I like them away as soon as eating even if means moving to a section on their own I've taken ybs at 18 days old and had ybs when they've been out a few times and settled them , obviously the soon the better so the bird has that connection to home
frankdooman Posted May 19, 2014 Report Posted May 19, 2014 They are all different I've separated y/ bds and two weeks later they still haven't left the loft I've also had them come out the next day once out the loft they can take off so if at a strange location they might try for where they were bred I've had that happen too so if bobbing up and down it's just your luck
gulkie Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 I prefer to get YB when they have short tails and just being able to flutter about But you can get them at any age as long as you give them a week or two in theBreaking cage shouldn't be a problem.
Michael J Burden Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 I have broken out ybs who had stopped squeaking but had never been out at their original loft. I opened their wing and cut down the next to moult feathers. So they could only flip around. You got to judge this yourself. Then half an hour after a feed they we're let out or pushed out with birds who had flown there period that day and only wanted to peck around. They followed them pecking about happily. Once they are confident around the outside of the loft you can take it easy with them getting them out even getting a broom under them to get then say onto the house. They fly back down to the loft and you know you have cracked it. As they moult the cut feathers they get more mobile and fly as normal. You can do this with prisoner stock too but with the amount of hawks about I would say forget itMjb
