Is it not the frost Harry? Joking aside you may have something there, no chemicals in it.

Should be no problem with that water then if it's tested and safe. Some “spring water" is actually quite contaminated. Soupie

Guest Owen Posted January 12, 2014 Report Posted January 12, 2014 I used to have a spring on my smallholding so I piped the water down to where the sheep drank from an old bath which was filled from the mains. I then put a second bath and had one filled with mains water and the other filled with spring water. I wanted to see which one the sheep chose to drink from if they made a choice. They chose the spring water and hardly touched the mains water. It was interesting to see them check which water by sniffing it and then moving to the spring water before they drank. I knew the water from the spring was safe to drink because two neighbours were using it for their houses and had it checked regularly.A friend decided to use spring water from a source on the mountain a couple of miles from here because he thought the water would be better for the birds due to the fact that it would not be contaminated with chemicals such as chlorine. It turned out to be a bad move because the water was very acid as is often the case with mountain water. Pigeons should have water which about 7 ph because they need the calcium to maintain health. A rough guide as to the suitability of spring or mountain water is to look at the life it supports. Good healthy water should grow algae and support both plants, live creatures and fish.
Guest paulrstokes Posted January 13, 2014 Report Posted January 13, 2014 I have noticed in my chickens, they have a drinker which is clean and replenished every day, yet they would rather drink dirty water out of any upturned pot or bucket.

Same as pigeons eh! Gutters etc. too. As for spring water / well water the best you can give the birds. Full of natural minerals etc. Make sure you keep the nose alert. Of smell at all means well / Spring needs cleaning.
