Hello all, Im from dublin and getting back into pigeons after a good few years(about15). I am thinking of converting my old 8"X6" barna shed into a loft just to get started again, and maybe next year get a larger loft built.

I just have a few questions for now (but plenty more to come !) How many birds could be kept in a loft this size? Have any winners ever come from a small loft ? Is it too small to split into cock/hen sections ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

hi stephen,

i would have probably 4 pair in this loft, start of with 10 youngsters from one source only and go from there, you do not have to seperate the birds into cocks and hens when they older if you cant do so, they can be left together. also as long as loft is dry and good clean water and food, good pigeons and you will succeed.

A dozen shoudn't be a problem if you have a dry well ventilated loft. Lots of people win with few birds. Too many birds and wet conditions are the conditions too avoid.

mate there loads of widowhood flyers flying there cocks into a loft this size if im right (most likely not  ;D) i think u can fit 12 widowhood cocks into a section this size what i would say if u can get a tiled roof onto this loft im sure if u do searches here u will see loads with these red tiles this will help greatly with ventilation although it will hold 12 boxes i think id say maybe 10 widowhood cocks is about right if u are making a stock loft out of it a cage aviary is a great thing as if u have prisoner stock u can give them baths in it and they get out in the fresh air i would go as far to say that a aviary on a stock loft is a must as what i do is lock them out there when not breeding with a grid floor then clean once a week keeps down on the work  ;)

best of luck

keep asking questions people on here will allways try to honest answer

hi mate do you think 10 cocks is a good idea?  i was thinking of along the lines of 10 cocks = 10 hens when paired which is 20 !! then 2 young in each nest = 40 !!  thats 40 in a 8x6 originally meant for 10 ?

good to help new guys.....

ure right timbarra but when space is an hindrance means must really when they are rearing youngers id put them on open hole

u are right but to keep one loft to race maybe 5 pigeons is not ideal either it would be grand if we all had 10 acres lol there would be no problems what i do u i have mine trapping though open door i build a big wire frame to put in the space of about 4  x 4 foot when they are not out and this is put up when not raining

what i would say is that a tiled roof would help greatly

timbarra i do agree with u whole hartley its not ideal but at times i think means must  :-/

tiled roof would help as air can escape quick and change inside for the better. I personally would have 5 pairs , but the young man may keep 2 or 102 in the shed  ;D

if we all the same it be boring world mate. i only ever had an old bid team of 5 pairs and won more than my share, you probably won more than your share to mate .. i do think going with tiles is good but depends on the guys costs and budget...

if you hear of that ache going let me know..... i can increase my pairs from 20 to 25,  ;D ;D

wish you all the best JAM. and the new chap to :)

Welcome to the forum thedubs and welcome back to the sport :)

Are you asking how many young birds? if so 25 or thereabouts would be fine.

Plenty of winners come out of lofts of all shapes and sizes, rabbit hutches even. Just do your best to get the ventilation right.

Just got out of the birds myself for a while, got rid of most of my stuff but have 4 sets of pipo boxs left might be a bit big for your set up but your welcome to them if you want, also a couple of baskets in need of some repair but again they are yours.

Just remembered I have a copy of Colin Walkers book, pigeon health and managment a really good book and Im sure I have a few dvds scattered around the place drop me a pm if you want any of these.
