Do fanciers over complicate the moult? Giving additives, and purchasing high priced so called moulting mixes? Reason why I asked a few years back a great national flyer told me he fed 100 barley through the moult, nothing else. Recently I read something from a legend in the sport that through the moult hell feed upto. 75% Barley, and 25% conditioning mix( red band type full of fatty seeds) , yet again with no additives only time he'll change the feed is before he pairs.

What are your thoughts, have you tried something similar? How was the feather quality? Did you notice anything different in the moult ?

The short answer is YES. My birds are on a 50% general mix and 50% barley mix. My mix will be changed 14 days before pairing, to bring the birds into condition for pairing. The only additives I give is cider vinegar in the water once per week. My birds are never out from mid Sept. to early March and given a bath once per week in the aviary........ HEY PRESTO perfectly fully moulted birds. Keep it simple. I used to buy these super moulting mixes and loads of supplements and the birds never moulted any better. The one thing I now do differently is extend the hours of light to get the darkness YB cocks thro' the moult before pairing

i dont understand anybody giving barley through the moult , you wont to give the best grains available to give them a good moult then after the moult you can give them this and that

barley is one of thee most under rated grains available to the fancier

it is both higher in protein and carbs and has a low amount of fats

look at the majority of moulting mixes they have a % of barley included

a lot of fanciers i've spoken to when asked if they use barley say no the birds dont like it and won't eat it

a lot of kids don't like their vedge but it dont mean they not good for them

I use 4 jugs barley 2jugs wheat 1jug maize 1jug mixture 1jug layers pellets and they are looking grand ,I think barley is a great way of controling strength of feed by upping or lowering the amount in the mix as required ,up here price of feed not coming down a lot yet.
