Most lofts are around 6' at the eaves. The birds usually attempt to be on the high perches so they are in the air flow. That could be a part answer to your question, but all lofts have different air flow and that is probably the important factor. The height for the birds perching is probably less important than being sure the area they perch has good air flow.
