chaz Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 The young bird pen is about finished , which is lucky really as I had to pick up the first 6 young birds today with some more following over the next 2 weekends as they are ready to wean As you can see it is an open fronted design which will hopefully cut down on dust (PFL) and also keep the birds bright and healthy If it doesn`t work I will close up the front using plexiglass/perspex , but see know reason why the birds shouldn`t be happy and healthy with the fresh air all around them, it may not be the most comfortable for me , but it isn`t designed with my comfort in mind but for the birds health and well being , I just need to add some more perches and possibly add some shutter doors to stop any "really" bad weather driving in to the pen you can see part of what will be the old bird pen next to it but it needs some alterations making which is the next job now the young birds have got a pen and some of the birds
fletch Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 i like the design i am going to build me a new young bird loft and that looks a good idea to me an i like the idea of the perspex for bad weather, all looks good only thing is i prefer box perches for young not v perches but look good mate good luck with them

chaz Posted April 12, 2009 Author Report Posted April 12, 2009 Thanks for all the comments The Y/B`s are always done very well by the fancier I had them off a real good rearer of a pigeon I have a few more to come from him and a few from a couple of other good local fanciers , who have all kindly offered to supply me with birds to start me back up again, the sport will continue as long as it has good genuine fanciers like these gentelmen within it`s ranks looking to help people out and not just in it for the coin
newbold Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 how many birds you having in ther mate, ithink another 7 perches and that will be it . just my opinion
chaz Posted April 12, 2009 Author Report Posted April 12, 2009 how many birds you having in ther mate, ithink another 7 perches and that will be it . just my opinion I am thinking 18-20 yb`s maximum , that will allow me once I have my full team of old birds (12 pairs) to single rear or float eggs from my best under some of the unknowns and also bring in a couple of young`uns each year to try out
chaz Posted April 12, 2009 Author Report Posted April 12, 2009 is ther 5 perches on back or 4 5 along the back but will hopefully be changing them for a block of 20 box perches in the near future
chichichi Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 the very best of luck,, the birds look very nice.. enjoy .. ant
doo Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 The loft looks great ....wll you add a stall trap or will they enter at the bottom with a ets pad just inside. The kit of yb's look great & are a credit to the breeder . all the best for the coming season
newbold Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 if your having 20 birds puit 25 perches then the birds dont feel over crouded and more comfy
chaz Posted April 13, 2009 Author Report Posted April 13, 2009 The loft looks great ....wll you add a stall trap or will they enter at the bottom with a ets pad just inside. The kit of yb's look great & are a credit to the breeder . all the best for the coming season I haven`t worked out how to trap probably the old fashioned way of open door and T3 but may look at ETS for the future, but will not have a clock set for most y/b races, I will just be sending them for experience as I am trying to build a channel team and see no point in catching and stressing y/b`s when they will have little chance against the sprint and y/b racers , the same will go for inland with old birds I will not clock just use them for training with an eye to the future :-/ Thanks everybody for the interest shown
BLACK W F Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 the guy that bred you the y/bs certainly never let you down they are cracking young uns you got a nice set up best of luck cheers Alan
pjc Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 All looks good. Open door is fine for the first couple of birds and if you send everything each week but you are better off having a trapping system or a sputnik etc for the birds to trap into and then be confined to the loft. The open front will help with your pfl but i would make an overhang at the front of the loft which will not effect air flow but will keep the majority of the rain out.

The kit of yb's look great & are a credit to the breeder . all the best for the coming season I made an alteration after some helpful advice form a few on this thread , I have added a basic (but hopefully serviceable) folding landing board and some bob wires for late comers
REDROCKET Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 very good it looks a treat and this isn't a critisizum why do most peaple put the landing board spot on bumping head hieght my partners do the same all the best
chaz Posted April 19, 2009 Author Report Posted April 19, 2009 very good it looks a treat and this isn't a critisizum why do most peaple put the landing board spot on bumping head hieght my partners do the same all the best The reason I put it that height is that I was doing it on my own and it was the best height I could get while trying to hold/mark/drill and fix the thing LOL, but I know what you mean it will no doubt cause me concussion before to much longer 8)
REDROCKET Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 i find myself in the same situation often your reply actually brought a smile to my face.
pjc Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 be careful no cats come over from the back of the loft as they will be able to get onto the landing board easily.
